If you come to be around Mantua ( Northwest Italy ) do not miss to pay a visit to this really unique gothic church located in the small village of Curtatone. Actually I wouldn't prevent you from enjoying the feeling of amazement and oddness once you'll cross the main door of the church ... I'd prefer to leave you with that curioisty ... I just advice that a crocodile is waiting for you, so watch out ! One more tip. On the right hand side of the sanctuary you find an arch : pass through and a road will lead you ( 150 m ) to the river ( Mincio ) where you find the dock of Mincio's Boatmen. Special flat boats will take you in the heart of the Mincio Natural Park ( it is the Natural Reserve of the Mincio's “valleys”, a humid environment of exceptional beauty ).The excursions come down the river through the Reserve, towards Borgo Angeli, the Superior Lake and Mantua. A real must.

Bus #13, which you catch near Palazzo Te, goes directly to Grazie and the walk to the church takes less than 5 minutes. The church itself reflects wonderful spirituality with the ex voto statues lining two rows along the walls. And, of course, hanging from the ceiling is the crocodile. Two versions of its origin: crocodiles represent evil or this particular crocodile was menacing the local population and was killed with the aid of the Virgin. Either way, there is something quite charming about its being the first site if you look up upon entering the church.
Check the bus schedule for return to Mantua and be sure to flag the bus as it comes through Mantua - it will not stop otherwise, even if you are standing right at the bus stop. Should you miss the bus, walk around to the back of the church to the park where you can sit watching ducks and swans until the next bus arrives. (reported from experience)

I had never seen such a wooden decoration. Both laterals are covered by handcrafts statues, mainly representing people who was saved by the Virgin... You may believe it or not, but the result of this popular religiosity are astonishing, and touching

The sanctuary is filled with exotic ex-votos and statues of martyrs being martyred. Once a year the place is visited by gypsies who draw colour-chalk pictures in the square in front of the church.

Even the locals call the sanctuary a "mad" place. The church is studded with exotic ex-votos (including a crocodile) and lined with scary sculptures of martyrs being martyred. Once a year Grazie is a meeting-place for gypsies, who draw colour-chalk pictures on the square in front of the sanctuary. Each time we went the place was crowded to capacity by the faithful, and the worship service was quite ordinary inasmuch as we could judge, with an altogether decent sermon in understandable Italian.

This is a most unusual church, with extraordinary and in some cases macabre statuary and with numerous caged off side chapels.
It is certainly worth a visit if one is in the area.

Visiting Italy you get used to the church being over the top but this place takes things to a whole new level. The town is a small quiet town, not much there but it does have a large square outside the sanctuary where they hold events.
The interior is godsmacking. The walls are crammed full of carved iconography and statues, some in quite gory and vivid detail. Extremely unusual and you'll have the images etched into your memory !
Can't say it does anything for me spiritually but it is spectacular.
If you visit the sanctuary do take a walk to the lake round the back.... (but beware the bug bites).

I visited this place a few times, as it is close to my hometown. The church is very peculiar, with interesting painted statues and a hanging stuffed crocodile (which terrified me as a child) of unclear provenance.
Pity about the unfriendly priest, who rudely scolded in Italian some Nordic Protestant tourists who (unaware of the habits of Catholic churches) dared enter the church sleeveless.
Do not miss the view of the river a few metres away, the area is lovely and very green.
