About
The Asland cement factory, located in the area known as Clot del Moro in the town of Castellar de n'Hug, closed down more than 30 years ago. The remains you can still see today provide a spectacular example of one of the most amazing buildings from the time of Catalan industrialisation, set in unique natural surroundings. The factory has been turned into the Asland Cement Museum of Castellar de n'Hug featuring an interpretation centre and outdoor itinerary around the industrial ruins. In 1901, Eusebi Guell and some other partners founded the cement company Companyia General d'Asfalts i Portland, SA (Asland) in Barcelona and construction of the cement plant began - an impressive Modernist building featuring Catalan vaults and forged iron structures which were designed, it would appear, by architect Rafael Guastavino. It offers the opportunity to appreciate a dynamic centre that unveils the first industrial cement facility in Catalonia.

The Asland Cement factory was at the heart of the Catalan industrial revolution and is now a museum. There are extensive exhibits on the history of cement, the factory and the cement making process all housed in a restored industrial space. After that you walk outside to see the remains of the rest of the facility. All the information is in Spanish and Catalan but ask for a set of descriptive sheets in English. That said, the visual nature of the displays gives the gist of what is being described.
While one can drive to the museum (actually nearer La Pobla de Lillet than Castellar de n'Hug) we'd recommend taking the narrow gauge train (Tren de Ciment) from La Pobla de Lillet. If you do this then plan carefully as everything closes mid-afternoon for lunch.

Was very very interesting for me but I guess it wouldn't be everybodys cup of tea.
There are toilets there but no café and the shop was not very well stocked.
It would have been a very impressive building in its day
