South West Coast Path - Dancing Ledge and Langton Matravers
4.5
About
A 4.7 mile pastoral route taking in the South West Coast Path by hay meadows and flower-filled chalk grasslands, with the possibility of seeing puffins, bats and even dolphins. The steep cliffs have been hollowed out by quarrying of Purbeck limestone, shot through in places with important fossils, and the route follows ancient lanes through crumbling stone boundaries dating back hundreds of years.

Beautiful sunny cool Sunday spent exploring here for the first time . Incredible views of the sea spreading nearly 180 degrees - can almost see the earths curve. Amazing rock formations.

I was here for work and needed a break so decided to wonder around as i had never been here before. Completely wowed by the beauty of the area I found myself walking up a mini hill after the pier I have no idea where it was but the views for a city girl like me were breathtaking, even on a cloudy day!

We’d visited Durlston Castle a few times and Dancing Ledge had been on our to do list. We were staying at the local campsite (Tom’s field) so took the 10-15 mins walk down to Dancing Ledge. What a fascinating place and a lot of activity to watch. Climbers were on the lower section and making their way up the rock face, snorkelers were in the sea. It’s a fascinating place to look around. From there we took the coastal path back towards Swanage and stopped off at Durlston Castle for some refreshments. From there you can continue into Swanage but we took the bus (half hourly service from Durlston Castle). A great day out.

We went to Dancing Ledge. It was a fun packed day. There was no tour guide since it is a hike up the cliffs and hills. The views were unbelievable, beautiful and star striking. There is a 3 mile walk to go to the main destination. At the main point you can rock, fish, climb swim in the sea or a small pool of water in a rock. i think this is a fun day for every one. I recommend this trip to family's who want to do some sight seeing and have a fun day out.

A walk along the Swanage coast, plenty of amazing views of the cliffs with lots of places to get down the sea and a closer look at the cliffs. Dancing ledge was worth a visit.
This is quite difficult in some places so ensure you know the best parts to walk along. Lots of places to park nearby for a short walk.

The coastline is simply stunning along this stretch of the Purbeck countryside, it's well worth making the effort to climb down the steep pathways to what's known as Dancing Ledge.

The rock face was blasted away some 100 plus years ago to form a ledge to allow the local school children to access the sea more safely and take a swim.

Whilst we were there the was group of extreme sports enthusiasts that were being guided on how to safely Tomb Stone into the water from slightly higher cliff ledges.

We were lucky with the weather as it was a nice fine sunny day albeit a brisk breeze coming inland from the sea.

We walked from Durlston Country Park (Easy to find the start from the Durlston Country Park stone globe sculpture) along the SW Path as far as Worth Matravers. The path was very muddy and slippery in places as it winds along the bottom of the hills. This is only reason i age it three stars.
After the climb up and return along the Priest's Path the going is much easier.
Execellent views of the coast of course. Worth doing.

This is a glorious stretch of coastline any time of the year. It is just beautiful. Go equipped with decent shoes and water and take time to enjoy this amazing environment. It can be boggy after rain but a small price to pay - you might even see dolphins (we saw them in August) and peregrine falcons - wonderful. Head for a pint at the very trad Square and Compass and enjoy their home made pasty/veg/cheese pie.

We walked roughly 10-12 miles along this coastline every day, taking in different areas and it was absolutely stunning. We hope to do it again next year.

Fantastic in all weather but for different reasons. When wet it can be hazardous to reach but worth it. The area gets quite busy at weekend's. The views are stunning.
