    Lovely Historic Area
Steep Hill is the street through the heart of old medieval Lincoln which goes straight up the steep hill slope to the medieval centre at the top of the hill. At the bottom, it connects right to the newer city centre. It is lovely and very scenic, a steep cobblestone street lined with some of the oldest buildings in the the city, along with a great many shops, places to get tea, pubs, and more. It also offers some nice views up to the cathedral or over the lower lying newer parts of the city.

Do take it easy as going up too fast can leave you panting
I strolled down Steep Hill whose name arises from the gradient of the hill, which is difficult to ascend and descend, as it has a one-in-seven (14%) gradient. At the top of the hill is the entrance to Lincoln Cathedral and at the bottom is Well Lane. The Hill consists of independent shops, tea rooms and pubs. Saw an interesting vintage shops with many beautiful item inside, as well as a shop selling old car electronics and meters salvaged from old fighter jets and cars. If you drive, do remember that you will probably have to ascend the hill which you earlier descended. Do take it easy as going up too fast can leave you panting.

    Beautiful historical street
I love steep hill and enjoy the challenge of climbing it after a few hours of shopping in the modern area at the bottom. There are many great little shops along the way for those seeking pretty things and charming little bits and bobs. I appreciate the way most of the shops get into the spirit of what ever season it is and decorate accordingly (Christmas, Easter ect) I don’t personally find it as steep as many reviewers do, there is a place to stop and rest half way with a few small benches. I’ve scene every one from parents with pushchairs to drunk students to elderly with walking sticks travel up the hill, some faster than others. Tactics are to take your time and take in the scenery as you go. The reward of the castle and the cathedral at the top are not to be missed.

A very steep climb up - pleasant going down
A very steep climb up but pleasant to walk down. Interesting history and beautiful buildings. It is worth it to walk slowly and experience and explore all the beautiful and diverse buildings and shops. We walked past the city boundary posts and then had to look for them. Don’t rush.

Steep Hill earns it's name with it's one in seven (or 14%) gradient. It's cobbled street, which is lined with independent shops, tea rooms and restaurants, leads to and from Lincoln Cathedral, Lincoln Castle and the Cathedral Quarter.

I'm not a fit person but was able to walk up the steep incline, with only one break needed at Steep Hill Wines (who sell a selection of wines and local beers). If you take your time looking at the shops, the walk won't be too bad.

STEEP HILL WINES
Shame I'm writing this after spending so much time/money over the years in there, lovely little shop. However customer service and general manners are paramount to me. I enquired about a bottle of rum in the window, one I've previously bought so am aware of the price. The lady behind the counter had to be asked twice by someone to check the price/quantity available for me. She explained to me the bottle wasn't plastic (I didn't ask). She then bluntly told me the price, I thanked her and explained another business I follow currently had it £20 cheaper online before browsing the rest of the store. She felt inclined to tell me that "online" doesn't really help small businesses. Sorry this particular business isn't as privileged as you in terms of having a store, so "online", like many up and coming companies is how they function. Maybe I shouldn't have said I'd get it elsewhere but it was general chit chat that was greeted with an unprofessional and rude attitude.

No trip to Lincoln is complete without joining everyone else huffing and puffing up the hill and envying those on the way down. There is a hand rail and paved area so you can avoid the added challenge of the cobbles . The olde worlde charm has been retained, the buildings are impressive and the shops and cafes not the usual tatty gift shops , they are independent and selling unique quality items .

Steep Hill is the main route up to Lincoln Cathedral and Castle. The surface is mainly cobbled with flag stone pavements either side, it is steep.
En-route the hill is lined with lovely independent shops and cafes and is well worth the effort to walk up. The return journey takes you to the main shopping area of the City Centre.

We visited the city of Lincoln and Steep Hill whilst on route to North Yorkshire in a planned break to our journey. We had an afternoon to explore the city and arriving by car, had used the park & ride system to reach the Cathedral area.
The hill is aptly named and takes the visitor from the older cathedral / castle area down to the more modern main part of the town and the river Witham. The hill is steep and a quick search on the internet declares the average gradient to be 1 in 7 (14%). That said it is most certainly worth traversing, when descending the visitor gains some elevated views of the surrounding area but whilst ascending it is possible to get some lovey photos of old buildings, steeply graded cobbled streets and the cathedral tower reaching up into the skyline. Either side of the hill are some tempting tea shops, cafes and arts and craft shops and railings and benches are provided to assist the weary traveller if required.

This very historic street leads from the riverside area of the town up to the cathedral and castle on the hill. This street is said to contain some of the oldest buildings in Britain.
It’s certainly lives up to its name and I would suggest taking a tea or coffee break halfway up. Going down is not much easier.

Just a really steep hill isn’t it. Most of the shops are closed & the ones that aren’t are just full of old expensive tat that you can get from B&M for 99p. Hurts the calves to get up. Not very exiting as it’s just a street to walk up to get to the castle.I live in a cul-de-sac in the midlands & that has more charm than this.

Well the name says it all. In places the cobbled street is about a gradient of 1 in 3 and even might have something of a defensive strategy in the middle ages. Certainly some people were struggling to reach the magnificent cathedral at the top. Some interesting local retail shops to pause to catch your breathe en route uphill, together with some good restaurants as well. The local authority has done well to ensure that the area has been maintained sympathetically to this historic city. It really does make all the difference.

So this is more a novelty than anything else, I will admit it is steep and would be hard work for anyone who may struggle with mobility or anyone pushing a pram/ pushchair.
Our 3 year old managed it but we had to take a steady pace.
It's worth the visit to the cathedralat the top and it's a nice walk back down. The shops are little niche shops but some are over priced.
The one thing that let's it down is the amount of dog owners letting their pets foul on the pavement and not on leads.

Quirky cobbled street with shops and eateries and bars along the way. Comfy footwear is a must and the hill really is steep! The cathedral is at the top for those willing to pay to look Round a cathedral ( we were not). Definitely worth a visit.
