This small museum acquaints people with the way of life in this part of Wales in the past. The construction of the thatched roof is visible from inside the structure. They used Gorse as a fragrant and strengthening item which fascinated me. The Gorse smell is wonderful, and it is a strong weedy plant which blooms all over Scotland as well! The daily life here was hard work and frugality. It is an excellent place to visit!

Swtan is a stone built thatched cottage which has been preserved in time. It was owner occupied until very recent times and now presents as a rare opportunity to see what life was really like over 100 years ago.
I've visited many so called 'heritage sites' over the years. Few match this in capturing both the simplicity, beauty and hardship of day to day life for ordinary folk. This place is exceptional; the location and views, the authenticity, the hands on feel for the property and land. I've visited Anglesey for some 60 years and was unaware that there were thatched properties on the island. This place is a stunning microcosm where day to day life can be seen. There's the property itself, with working fire, outbuildings and garden. And some amazing video recordings by the most recent owner. Walking to a well for water, for example.
If you visit Anglesey, put this on your list of of things to do. The location alone is spectacular and as a bonus, there's a more than half decent restaurant across the road...no table available when I dropped by so hopefully a pleasure yet to come at The Lobsterpot.

I take all my visitors from overseas to this enchanting little cottage, usually after we've visited some of the grander houses. It's a complete contrast, and all the more endearing. Here is a glimpse into the lives of the generations of country people who lived here, their harsh world of long working days, and the comforts they found in the domestic environment of their simple cottage. You can sit on the settle by the fire in the tiny space which was living room, dining room and kitchen all in one. You can see the larder with its slate shelf where they stored their food, the parents' tiny bedroom, and the loft - or "shelf", where the children slept. The house has been meticulously restored, and is full of the sort of furnishings and objects which would once have been part of family life.
Outside, the garden has been resurrected to a form which it once had, and is again producing fruit and vegetables. There's a box where you can make a donation.
Margaret the caretaker, who has lived up the road all her life, is enthusiastic about the cottage, and is a mine of useful information about the place. The team of local people who have worked to present Swtan as we now see it are to be praised for their splendid work.
There's a nice café nearby - a great place for afternoon tea, and down the path is the beautiful little Church Bay. There's an air of gentle simplicity about the whole area which remains with you long after you leave.

What a wonderful surprise, tucked away in the car park at Church Bay. A fascinating restored cottage transformed into a heritage museum. A very friendly young member of staff gave explanation, information and showed me the swallows nests too!!! Each room was recreated to show a typical cottage at around the 1900s. We especially enjoyed the garden with its herb garden. A mist see!

We found this by accident and it was great. The entrance fee is very low (£3.50 or £2 for National Trust members). Make sure you watch the video as it not only tells you about how the restoration took place but also about the lifestyle of the house. It's great.

The property has been beautifully restored and is well worth a visit. During our visit the helpful lady in the shop explained several things to us including the origins of "being left on the shelf"!

Visited with my four children aged 7-14.
Such a little secret, tucked away at the back of the Church Bay car park. A lovely example of a farmers cottage that's clearly been a labour of love to restore. We watched the short video which was interesting and the children were amazed how small the living space was. Worth a visit!

So here we are near enough to closing time, with a little doglet....and this wonderful lady (who was on her way to set up everything for the following day, aka on her way out) didn't just make us feel welcome, oh no clearly that would not have been good enough, no she switched the information video on for us again and she answered all our questions and she was lovely. I normally don't go for the cultural part of places but I just found that supporting such a lovely local individual charity to keep a memory and the knowledge of what was alive needs supporting... my remaining stay in wales was seen with a completley new insight after my really lovely visit there

A restored, yet period, Anglesey dwelling operated by a Trust. Very close to Church bay, which has good sands, and The Lobster Pot restaurant.

Such a peaceful place, full of charm.
The new visitors information room is full of knowledge, of how life at Swtan must have been like in the early 1900.
A real blast from the past.
