The gallery is stewarded by its members and volunteers and is open daily. We noticed the sign on the main road and went to check it out. Nice local artwork in an attractive building. Had a nice chat with Lizzie, one of the artists on display, and bought one of her flower paintings. Check it out, a block off the Main Street.

Arts and crafts at their finest! Ideal for the visitor to UK wanting to take home something special. The crowning glory was the traditional silver smith on the top floor - tap, tapping away at precious metals to produce exquisite pieces of silver etc. You are transported back over 100 years with the artifacts and the atmosphere. Don't pass this one by!

I am glad we found this place as it has some lovely pieces. One of which I was given as a gift. Be sure to go upstairs to the silver workshop which is amazing. There are some great gift ideas and a coffee shop.

My husband and I visited the gallery on Thursday 31 August as we were staying close by. When we entered the lady was arranging objects on the shelf and did not turn around or look up. We browsed the rooms and there was a particular piece we liked but the lady then just about managed to say hello and then moved away so we left.

We next went to Hart silversmith and there met Caroline Richardson. What a difference in attitude. She was friendly and we observed her at work and allowed us to take couple of photos. We ended up ordering a bangle from her. Just shows what good manners and friendly attitude can do.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review - we value your feedback. Our gallery is staffed by our co-operative members and some local volunteers who are all usually very welcoming. A reminder has been sent round that a friendly welcome goes a long way.

Occasionally in weekend formats such as cocktail parties, there's a modest debate distinguishing between the properties of Art and Craft. Is there such a thing as bad art or brilliant craft? Do the fruits of the one tend to be envisioned as subtle genteel touches by means of sensitive fingertips and the other calloused poundings driven by toughened sinews? Is the inspiration for one more spiritual and the other more temporal? Here at the Craft Workshops such matters, as well should be, are of of little consequence as we feel far less compelled to maintain our part in sometimes unavoidably tortured social settings.

The shops here offer lively demos of fascinating and timeless technique giving birth to outstanding quality of product -as the description informs us- dating to the turn of the twentieth century when workshops for metal, furniture, jewellery, silver, wrought-iron and printing were brought together in The Old Silk Mill and its surrounding buildings. A hundred years later, a new infusion of ceramicists, photographers, textile artists and sculptors also took turns maintaining the exhibitions. All give generously and patiently in talking to and educating visitors about anything related to their work or techniques.

My wife and I fully enjoyed the variety and stimulating atmosphere all about us. There is no pressure to make a purchase and the feeling is one of people enjoying each other in an interaction as devoted to arts, craft and good company as it is maintaining a livelihood.

A time warp! Truly amazing trip back in time and a small selection of items to purchase. The skills have been passed down through the generations. Truly a family business and top quality craftsmanship.

The Old Silk Mill is worth taking some time to visit. Local artists display their work and many also work on site. Harts Silversmiths is wonderful. Our children love seeing sheets of silver, half made items and beautifully finished items. Not only does it look and feel like you're stepping back in time but you will be welcomed by the silversmiths like you're a local!
A coffee shop with freshly ground coffee, teas and cakes is worth a try. There are tables and chairs out the back too, as well as a few different trades people, working in their units.
If you want to be located close to the Old Silk Mill, why not look up Silk Mill Cottage which is a stunningly renovated holiday cottage with close links to the Mill.

Tucked away off the Main Street, this place is well worth a visit. Firstly it has an excellent cafe, serving good coffee, cakes and lite bites, secondly it has a wonderful gallery, packed with work by genuinely local artists, thirdly it has a jewellery making outlet, and last but by no means least, you can visit the Hart Silversmith workshops! The latter is particularly fascinating because it takes you back in time. This place hasn't altered in decades and you can actually wander in and view the silversmiths working on pieces and talk with them a out the process, their skills and so on. A really great attraction.

The Silk Mill has so much history surrounding it. The ground floor looks after you - a place to drink coffee and very nice crafty stuff. One floor up and you can go into Caroline Richardson's jewellery workshop. Such a gifted designer of all things pretty and sparkling. Then it's on to Hart's, Silversmiths workshop on the same floor. It is like stepping back more than a century in time. It looks like you are entering a sepia photograph.
