- Marie Helene AMontreal, Canada141 contributionsA little gem in the Jardin des TuileriesIf you like smaller museums, this one is for you and if you like the Impressionists then this museum will make you smile, This is where you can see Monet's Nympheas and many other great paintings from this era. The museum is nested in the Jardin des Tuileries and is not as crowded as the Louvre. you can visit in 2 hours and see the masterpieces of the wordlVisited March 2023Written March 18, 2023
- MILOUWNew York City, New York1,373 contributionsMatisse exhibitionThis Matisse show is focused on his works in the 1930s including close collaborations with Picasso. The Cahier de l'Art publication of the period illustrates the matter. Medium sized exhibition, large crowds a bit overwhelming.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2023
- Ana VEugene, Oregon610 contributionsWonderful experienceIt is an amazing experience to see to see The Water Lilies by Monet up close. It almost felt surreal to see them that close. There are other great paintings to see as well. You need to get a timed entry ticket for this museum.Visited March 2023Written April 7, 2023
- paulac32Manchester, United Kingdom303 contributionsMust-see MonetThis is a must-visit in Paris. Best to pre-book tickets with a timed slot. You only need to arrive about 10 minutes before your slot then and join the appropriate line. They won't let you in earlier. Separate and much longer line for those without tickets! The Matisse exhibition was interesting but the Monets are the main draw.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 14, 2023
- yfp022 contributionsAnother fantastic museumHaving been to Paris on numerous occasions this was a museum that we had overlooked. It is well worth the visit not just for Monet’s Water Lilies, as there is so much more to see. There was a Matisse exhibit when we went which was amazing. Well worth the visit. Would recommend pre-booking tickets.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 14, 2023
- skd22553 contributionsGet a timed ticket! We were not sure we were going to be able to make it to the Musee de l"Orangerie until the night before. We hopped online to buy tickets and they were sold out. We decided to go and stand in line. I highly recommend you get tickets in advance. We lined up in the full sun for an hour and 15 minutes. The line continued to get longer the later in the day as we also checked it as we left. we did see several people try and arrive early with their timed tickets. They were all turned away until their time. we did notice that people that arrived after their time were let in no matter how far off they had missed their time. I would buy an early timed ticket in the day and show up at your convenience. The musem itself is something to see. We bought the headset self guided tour and I recommend it as the commentary was very interesting. The Waterlillies are the highlight, but there are quite a few other amazing works.Visited May 2023Written June 9, 2023
- Stamford_FamilyOrlando, Florida46 contributionsSize MattersThis was a last-minute stop. We did wait in line, so I recommend getting tickets in advance or showing up early. This museum houses the works of Monet and his Water Lillies. I knew the paintings were large, but totally did not expect the sheer magnitude of these paintings. Definitely recommend a visit.Visited March 2023Written June 23, 2023
- Katie H36 contributionsFantastic experience! My partner and I visited recently and it was an unforgettable experience! It was amazing to see the Waterlillies in full glory in such a big, open space! It is hard to describe how amazing it is in words - it needs to be seen! The lower floor is also excellent - with lots of painings to see and appreciate! I would definitely highly recommend a visit!Visited July 2023Written July 9, 2023
- Moonshiner8Mason, Ohio111 contributionsWorth a stopWorth the visit if you did not get enough art in the Louvre or Orsey. Monet’s water lilies are the main attraction but there is much to see in addition. The crowd was quite small so you can spend some more time admiring the works.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 30, 2023
- BethAnn HLa Quinta, California209 contributionsNymphéas in all their glory!Must see! Having been to Giverny and seen Monet’s paintings in museums worldwide, this recently opened two-gallery presentation of Claude Monet’s “Nymphéas“ is stunning. Make time to see the entire l’Orangerie collection because it is not duplicative of the Louvre nor Musée d’Orsay.Visited July 2023Written August 11, 2023

Our second visit, some years after the first. This time, the Monets seemed dim, faded, drab at first, although that effect faded after a few minutes. Not as wonderful as my memories. Since then we have seen many Monets in various locations, so maybe we have changed.
Downstairs, because of renovations, there was nothing but one large painting that looked as if the workmen might have done it with rollers after a few verres du vin. The incremental cost of this museum in the combo pass with D’Orsay was only a few Euros so we shouldn’t complain.

It is a small museum that can be done quickly and paired with a visit to Musée d'Orsay or other sites nearby. Monet’s Water Lillies are the main attraction but the lower level has works from other artists of Monet’s era. Very manageable, well designed, easy to navigate. If possible, best to reserve ticket online so you can walk right in. Tickets can be purchased on site, but access may be delayed as they are still limiting the number of people inside as a COVID precaution as of October 2021.

If you can get the combo ticket to the Musee D'Orsay with the l'Orangerie for an extra 4 euros, definitely worth it. Currently, there is a major renovation going on and much of their collection is not available for viewing. So, if you enjoy Monet, this is an opportunity to see a unique display of his waterlilies.
Primarily marked this as only a 3 star due to the lack of available art, otherwise, it's a great museum.

Well run museum. Easy to find and easy to find way around. Not crowded so could really appreciate the paintings. Shame we just missed the Hockney exhibit by a day.I would recommend going when there is a special exhibition on to get your money's worth for the entrance fee.

I booked my tickets through the French section of the website so probably missed more clear wording - but as at 25 July the only section of the gallery that is open are the two rooms containing the water lillies (ie 8 paintings).
I’m not sure I’d have paid the reduced but still pretty high entry fee if I’d realised. I’d definitely not have bought the €3 audio guide. That’s a Euro for each of the three recordings and they were of a “meh” quality.
For some, the opportunity to visit these 8 impressively presented works in comparative quiet would be worth it. For me, it probably wasn’t - especially when the audio guide is included!

The highlight of the Museum are the Monet water lillies. We went in the alte afternoon and got to enjoy them with a very small crowd. They are doing some renovations, so we missed part fo their permanent collection. They did have a special of Seurat as well as "sunday afternoon in the park with george". Next time we hope to visit with buy a head tickets!

Loved the Waterlilies of course, and the setting is perfect. It would have been better if staff did ask people to observe the requests for silence.
We were disappointed though that alone of all the museums in Paris that we visited, the Musee de l'Orangerie refused payment by cash - which for a foreign bank card makes it more expensive. The signage also did not correspond to the current use of layout (e.g. large signs to the Billeterie pointed past the place they were using to sell tickets). We presume this was due to covid measures (the cloakroom was also not available), but again was not as clear as other Paris museums, and made for a confusing and frustrating start to the visit.

We went on the free first Sunday of the month, but still got timed tickets online early. We arrived 10 minute before 9 and stayed until 10:45. The first floor is Monet's huge canvases, which were so cool to see after being in Giverny. You are supposed to view those rooms in silence, we were exiting as tour groups of high schoolers were entered so the shushing was beginning too (makes you feel like you are in the Sistine chapel)
The other floor with an excellent temporary exhibit and a handful of rooms of other artists of the same time period were also great.
There is a cafe and a great gift shop.

The lines were long - even for those of us with a museum pass; and much of the museum was closed. But I came to see the water lillies and I was not disappointed. I have admired the photos of Monet painting the exhibit for over 40 years. It was nice to finally see them face to face. If you are not a fan of Monet, I would wait until the new exhibits are opened. But for me, the 30 or so minutes we spent in line was worth it.

Didn't really understand the hype about water lilies before coming here. We were at the Orsay museum and decided to hop over to this one and knock out the two big impressionist sites in one afternoon. Definitely worth the visit - entry way gives some quick background as to how the art ended up here, how it was basically the first of it's kind in terms of how the plan to display the panels was always part of Monet's master plan.

When are tickets released? I’m trying to reserve tickets in advance and am 60-days out. Most other sites allow pre bookings but l’Orangerie seems to only allow bookings 30-days out. Am I missing something?

Truthfully, we lucked out on our morning walk and went right in without tickets.
I am trying to make reservations on your website but the "your selection" box does not work so I'm stuck?

Hi, is the Combination Ticket to d’Orsay and l’Orangerie still being sold? Does it Include an easy access line? If not, can I buy that separately or in another package? Thank you.

As of two weeks ago there were very few tourists in Paris. I don’t know about the combo ticket. You do need to reserve online for the Orangerie. There was less than a 10-minute wait to enter the Orsay. Excellent time to experience Paris.

Does the Monday morning English language tour of the Water Lilies series require advanced booking?

Hi there, actually, you can book your tour 15 mins before at the register or book it online. Sorry, for some reason Tripadvisor does not let me copy the site where you can book. but follow these steps:
1. on the landing page, go to the right and choose the (fourth, top to bottom) orange circle that says "diary"
2. Scroll down to the Monday you want to book, if it is next week, then it must be Monday Feb 17th at 9:45 am
3. Click on the blue title "English guided tour: The Nymphéas [Water Lilies], Claude Monet"
4. on the right column, at the bottom click on booking and follow the steps to book your tour.
Have a great time, it is an amazing museum!

Are the paintings replications or originals? This sounds like such a stupid question, but I went today and they had Seurat's Un dimanche après-midi à la Grande Jatte on display, but I thought that was housed at the Art Institute of Chicago. I studied the description and didn't see "replica." I'm so confused. Did I see the real thing?
Ekir

I found my answer. I learned that master artists often did "Etudes" or "Studies" before or while working on their masterpieces to try out or perfect a technique-rather like a rough draft or brainstorming session for a piece of writing. The Seurat at L'Orangerie that I asked about is an etude for Un dimanche après-midi à l'île de la Grande Jatte, which is the masterwork hanging in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Must I use combo tickets on same day.?

No. L'Orangerie is a completely different experience from the D'Orsay. If the Impressionists and Post-impressionists are your main interest, head for the top (5th) floor of the D'Orsay--before you get tired out!
