The best district of Paris
2019. aug.
We really love Belleville: cheap restaurants, different people from the center, graffitis...and this district is not invaded by tourists yet!

Paris where people Livs

We stayed south of Belleville and spent half a day on the long walk thru La Chaisse to, and around, Belleville.
Worth a visit just to see an area that is only now being 'improved' and so far culturally and economically from the popular Paris.
No it isn't scenic or pretty - but it is 'real' and a place where you get a flavour of the old Paris.
Lots of cafes, restos and bars.

Stumbled on this area because I attended a “cupping” tasting at Belleville Coffee (highly recommend the cupping tour). Across the street was a delicious Ethiopian restaurant called Restaurant Itegue Taitu (highly recommend) where we ate a delicious lunch. Everyone who walked by us said hello and it made us feel welcome in the neighborhood. We strolled through this cool & vibrant neighborhood and found murals, parks and canals. It was our last day in Paris and it was the perfect place to spend our last day.

Paris of the beaten path!

On Tuesday and Friday morning there is a local market. It's like you are in another country. The neighborhood is very colorful on those days.

Shopped, ate and wandered in a beautiful park like it was miles from Paris. Village atmosphere but also vibrant Chinatown

Old Working Class Paris
2018. máj. • Egyszemélyes
One of the traditional workers' areas of Paris, now full of the world as this is an immigrant area. So lots of interesting affordable restaurants and cafes and street markets. Interesting and fun.

Lively cool neighbourhood

We stayed in Belleville on the recommendation of a Parisian friend, and we were not disappointed! It's a lively but cool area with lots of bars, restaurants and brunch places. To get a non-tourist perspective of Paris, definitely visit Belleville.

Great place! Nice to roam about ideally and just sit and relax with some food. It is a place where one sees different cultures present in Paris. Do visit!

Go to the look-out

Being a street art photographer allows me to check out neighborhoods that regular tourists may never visit because there are no monuments, or such neighborhoods are considered 'undesirable'. My sole mission in going to Belleville was to seek out a few very specific works of art, so I decided I'd walk from Bastille, all the way up to Belleville. Note to travellers: This is a long walk. A very long walk...! Using my trusty [OK, not always] Google Maps app, I followed directions until I reached a point where I could no longer continue because hey, the area between me and Belleville, was under construction.

As luck would have it, a very nice lady helped me navigate the area (this involved illegally trudging through a construction site and hopping fences - hey, what's a trip without a few adventures?) until we were street side and on our way again. My new friend was heading in the same direction as I was, so when she found out I was going to check out street art, she pointed me to a few areas where I was guaranteed to find it - sadly, my first stop was a bust because the wall was tagged, but this lady was very enthusiastic about taking me up to a lookout so I followed her, not really knowing what to expect. She led me exactly where I wanted to go - I just didn't know that where I wanted to go was in Belleville. There is this great look-out where you get a lovely view of Paris, including the tower. But the best part for me, is that there's a covered area where you can sit, that was completed painted by Seth (well-known street artist). It's pretty awesome so you should check it out and kill two birds with one stone.

Can't say a whole lot about the rest of Belleville because I was heading elsewhere after my art run, but the lookout is well worth the walk. There's also a really nice park right below it. My personal POV is that Belleville is a good place if you want to connect with the locals.

Good For Paris Experts
2016. nov.
After you've seen just about everything else in Paris, and if you are interested in digging deeper, do visit Belleville. Historically important residence of Paris' working class, important during the Commune period, now home to many immigrants, on the way to gentrification. Lots of affordable housing. Some fabulous views from the big park. Good ethnic restaurants.
