The Lutherhaus on the “Lutherplatz” in Eisenach and is one of the oldest surviving half-timbered houses in Thuringia. According to tradition, Martin Luther lived here with the Cotta family during his school days from the year 1498 to the year 1501. It is a nice looking house and worth a visth.

This is a house that Luther may have lived in as a student. As they point out, no one knew he was going to be famous, so what you are seeing is not his stuff and it isn't even necessarily where he lived. For the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, they have an excellent exhibit on Luther and the Bible. They even have a small section on how the Nazis used Luther's writings. Be sure to go to the other side of the gift shop and through the glass door to see an interesting exhibit on the Catholic view of Luther as it has developed over the centuries.

Interesting historical house with many facts about Luther and his times. We were fascinated to find out about his Bible translation and also about the development of the German language. There had been many dialects in the area before Luther but his translation, which included some words which he invented, spread across the country and had the effect of uniting the language. Helpful staff.

A walk through this house war rewarding. Luther did not live here for long, but still you can learn more about him and what he achieved when taking refuge in the castle above the town and translating bible into German.

It was chilly and raining when I arrived and yet the staff welcomed me warmly and wanted to know how to help. There are lots of artifacts and the museum is laid out well.

I visited the Luther House after the Wartburg and the Bach House, so it turned out to be somewhat of a repeat of many things about the reformation and Luther’s collaboration with Bach. There were some small pieces about his early life and time at what is referred to as the “Bach House”. It was somewhat anti-climatic, for me anyway.
It is just down the street from the Bach House, so it is close enough for an easy two-fer.
It is definitely worth the visit, and it would be better appreciate if the visit came before the Bach House and the Wartburg.

They get a lot of material into a small space using creative structuring. Fun sound booths where you can listen to music or speeches. Very interesting section about Luther and the Nazis. The lockers require a coin or a token from the desk which is returned when you replace the key. Nice gift shop if you desire a German Bible.

This is where Luther lived for three years in his student days. Having visited the Lutherhaus in Wittenberg, not to mention the two churches there associated with him, plus museums devoted to Lucas Cranach and to Melanchton, and then the Wartburg in Eisenach, I thought that there would be little more to learn. But there was. The museum presents its subject very well. There are plenty of knobs to press and information in English. It is supposed to be the oldest half-timbered house in Eisenach. Allow at least an hour. There was also an exhibition in the modern section for which we paid an extra €2 each. It was a load of cardboard boxes with interesting thoughts and facts written on them. We were issued with glasses (similar to solar eclipse glasses). Looking through one side gave the Catholic view, the other side gave the Protestant view. A bit weird really.

We came here as part of a Reformation Germany tour. The exhibits were good and educated me about Luther and his life and impact.
