We had an excellent guided visit by a young man who was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and humorous. We've visited many castles; this was especially interesting because of the focus on the Templars. There's an interesting film along with mannequins in costume and props. The tour was in Spanish but our guide also spoke English. We learned a lot. We walked from the center but the there's a very good road to the castle with a big parking lot.

Nestled at the top of one of the hills of Lleida, Gardeny castle is half forgotten or ignored by the people of Lleida. Maybe it is because for decades in was a military center with barracks and thousands of soldiers dwelling there. Now that he military have finally gone it has been restored and wants to have a second life with guided visits. Next to it there is a very modern complex of technology which has attracted many an enterprise to settle their businesses here.

Medieval cathedral fortress on top of mount, more church than castle. Great views. Too bad the church is not open to the public.

Found this small castle by accident, just walking up a hill to see what was there. For under 3 euro you can tour the house and battlements, and watch a short video in multiple languages about the Templar Knights.

The staff are very friendly and accommodating, and it was not crowded on the Sunday afternoon I was there. Don’t wear flip flops - the ground is covered in thistles that stuck to my sneakers, and I am now crunching my way across Lleida to my next stop 😂

In 12th century the Templar house was one of the biggest centres of power for the Order of the Templars for the crown of Aragon.
In the centre there is an audiovisual show which explains the life of a Templar as a soldier or a monk.
In the 17th and 18th century major reforms were made to the medieval building.
The castle is high up on a hill, so you get a good panoramic view over Lleida, the outside of the building isn't very intetesting, however the inside reflects more interest.
There is still room for some restoration work, sad to see bricks used to replace parts of the building.
Cost of entrance 2.60€. There are activities where you can experience being a Templar for the day with a costume.

My son and I went to see Gardeny castle during our road trip around Northern Spain and it was well worth stopping there if you are driving past. The ruins are in the middle of improvements to the surrounding area so we couldn't wander around outside too much, however it was great to be allowed to roam around inside unlike some more strict places. The video (in English) was excellent and the staff were charming even when we got a terrible case of Church giggles and had to practically leave.

This site is nowhere near as preserved as the Seu Vella, but it's an important piece of history nonetheless. You can learn about how the Knights Templar came into possession of the hill and modest castle, and see some fractions of ancient murals. It's quite small, and there isn't much to see, but it's an interesting and obscure piece of history.

A proper castle for once. Built to dominate the country round about and, more importantly, the town down below. Note the clear field of fire you'd get from the upper car park.

Next to the ‘old’ cathedral (Seu Vella) and the town hall (La Paeria, which houses an impressive cellar with both Roman and Morish remains), the Castell de Gardeny surely is not to be missed.

Situated on a hill top on the edge of town, the view of Seu Vella and the surrounding area is worth the modest price of admission alone (only €2,60), but the short introductory film on the rise and fall of the Knigts Templar is equally interesting. During the viewing (in a completely darkened cellar underneath the castle), a couple of very friendly guides walk you through a set up with lifesize dolls in full Templar dress.

Cheers to the very friendly lady at the ticket booth, who took time to show us some more points of interest on a plan of the historic center of Lerida / Lleida!

The outside doesn’t look that impressive but inside there were interesting things to see and learn. Tickets are 2.60€ pr person, good value for the money. Apparently if you come on a sunday with a group you can book an english guided tour with the possibility to dress up as a knights templar and try some food. We were there on saturday but got to enjoy a tour with an audio remote control (in english) and an english video at the beginning. There is a small cinema downstairs and they switch the lights off in the beginning og video, which was a bit scary but exciting at the same time. The video tour continues further down the room and into another room. After that you can walk inside the building and receive info through the audio remote. It was cool to be able to explore the building in this way, and so cheap! If you’re passing by you should take a trip inside and have a look.
