About
The Museum of Palazzo Altemps houses absolute masterpieces of ancient sculpture belonging to famous and valuable noble collections received in state ownership. The installation aims to integrate - in a harmonious combination - the marbles in the decorative context of the rooms, having in mind and proposing solutions adopted in the arrangement of antique collections. The visit, on two floors, reveals a succession of decorated rooms, a maze of stairs and corridors leading to the discovery of the ancient works of art.

Highly recommend this National Museum of Rome venue
So I wasn't sure this venue of the National Museum would be more than more statues (I had seem many in the previous days), but it was a wonderful venue. It's a mansion full of wonderful collections beautiful laid out, including Egyptian, with frescoes and wonderful decoratiion in many of the rooms. I wandered in a rectangle around the inner rooms on both floors and never got tired of looking. Each room had descriptions in Italian and English, with drawings of the statues, showing what parts were original and what were restored.

Part of the National Roman Museums (Museo Nationale Romano)
I bought a combined ticket which included access to this site plus Palazzo Massimo & Terme di Diocleziano. The ticket cost me €19 - which is higher than usual because there is a special exhibit at the Baths of Diocletian. This is an old aristocratic palace situated at the top of Piazza Navonna, containing a lot of exhibits/statues around a central courtyard.I paid an additional €5 for the audio guide which was very informative.

History and art in a calm ambiance.
Close to Piazza Navona you find this hidden gem! A great visit with plenty of nice surprises! Like the chapel ... very special. Even if you have already seen plenty of sculptures, sarcophages, etc in Rome you should plan to spend quality time in this museum which is not overcrowded at all and where you can enjoy art, history and "stories". We had a combi ticket (one museum was closed, so 3 museums were incl. Palazzo Massimo, Terme Diocletian and Palazzo Altemps). Recommend to visit the 3 Museums!

    Worthwhile
This is an exceptional place to go if you like art and sculpture, and haven't quite seen enough whilst in Rome! You can easily spend 2-3 hours here. There are toilets. I recommend getting the combined ticket for the best value. It includes two other fantastic museums with art, sculptures and courtyard.

I was planning to see several sights included in the Museo Nationale Romano ticket, so I booked it for $19. It includes four sights: Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, Terme di Diocleziano and Crypta Balbi. I have already been to Palazzo Massimo, which is stunning, and planned Terme di Diocleziano for Monday without realizing it will be closed…my miss. However, separate tickets just for the Palazzo Altemps and Crypta Balbi cost pretty much the same.

I was very interested to see Palazzo Altemps not only because of its beautiful Roman statues from the Ludovisi collection, but also because the palace belonged to Caterina Sforza’s first husband, Girolamo Riario, and this was her first home in Roma when she joined him as his very young wife (she was ten years old, to be exact).

The collection of Palazzo Altemps is not huge, but has truly remarkable statues on display, such as Sarcophagus Ludovisi, the Dying Gaul, the head of goddess Juno, and the gallery with the busts of Roman emperors. I spent around 90 minutes in the museum and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you just enjoy the sculptures for what they are (massive reconstructions containing a pebble sized piece of original stone and a hell of a lot of imagination) then this is fun for an hour. The building is very impressive with a wonderful courtyard but the sculptures are frankly trying too hard to be something that they are not.

Effectively a Roman Madame Tussaud’s made of stone!

incredible. Barely one minute from the hyper busy plaza navona. An unforgettable museum and a breath of fresh air. Top quality collection. But also for people who are not interested in archeology more than worth your whiskey. The building itself is beautiful. Unbelievable how perfectly everything is integrated here. Impressive. Combi ticket definitely recommended

Well curated variety of interesting items. Most all pieces had a well worded description of the item. (Blessedly in English). History, what you were looking at and why it is significant. The museum is a great architectural gem. History of the palace and its people. Well laid out. Great escape from crowds in the heart of Rome.

The Palazzo Altemps is a museum that specialises in exhibition ancient sculptures. Although there is a fine collection on display, the most famous is probably the Ludovisi Gaul, which alone is worth visiting the museum for.

Don’t forget you can get a single ticket that covers entrance to this museum, plus the Baths of Diocletian, Crypta Balbi and Palazzo Massimo alle Terme.

The entrance is unmarked and difficult to find (the unmarked doors are left of what looks like the entrance door) and the staff are definitely surly. You're required to leave all your hand luggage (purses, backpacks, etc.) in a locker and there's no sign telling you this until after you've paid the entrance fee of 9 Euros. However, if you find the entrance, are willing to leave your bag, and have the extra 4 Euro for the English headphones, this is a fabulous collection of Greek and Roman classical sculpture (including some outstanding and famous pieces such as "Galata Killing Himself after killing his Wife" and "Dionysus, the sartyr and the panther") in a fascinating palace that dates back to the 15th Century, well worth the 1-2 hours it takes to see it. Do not even contemplate walking through the museum without the headphones as it is the excellent commentary that turns this collection into a well-worthwhile and highly instructional visit.

It's just a 2-minute walk from the famous Piazza Navona, and 5 minutes from the Parthenon, so just off the beaten track.
