Neighborhood: Trevi
A non-stop photo and souvenir opportunity, Trevi is all about action. From early morning through the wee hours, the piazza surrounding Trevi Fountain hosts a never-ending flow of tourists hoping to make a wish or take a selfie. Clever restaurants, charming gelaterias, uncanny bars, kitsch shops, and a range of hotels make up the local landscape. Beneath the bustle are the remains of an ancient neighborhood that you can visit by heading over to a repertoire cinema and asking for a peek underground. There is something for everyone, but if peace and quiet are what you seek, plan to visit in the early morning hours.

- Beckytravels3 contributionsBeautiful villa. This is one of the most beautiful private residences in Rome. Only open on Friday and Saturday for English tours. Our guide Rebecca was outstanding. My teenage grandchildren enjoyed it and loved the views from the garden. I would highly recommend this if you have some extra time in Rome.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 27, 2023
- Lexie592Cambridge, United Kingdom14 contributionsA hidden gemWe did this on our last day in Rome, and I was a little apprehensive - it being open only one day and quite expensive. But it was so worth going. Utterly beautiful building and collection and the amazing garden in the middle of Rome, offering perhaps the best views of the trip. Would highly recommend. Incredibly knowledgeable and friendly guides who had real expert knowledge in the Princess Isabelle Apartments.Visited March 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 19, 2023
- OnAir7724871 contributionWonderful Morning at the Palazzo ColonnaLet me start out by saying the experience was amazing. Every room takes your breath away. The main gallery was so beautiful. You can also visit the garden that has an incredible view of Rome! What I really liked is that every room has a guide that is ready to answer all of your questions and gives information. In particular, when we visited Princess Isabelle's apartment, the guide was Erika who was very kind, professional and explained the Vanvitelli works which were my favorite! Then we had Beatrice who guided us through the fountain room. At the end, we went to the bar. It was a perfect morning and different than the usual tours you take. I highly recommend going.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 1, 2023

- Angel R7 contributionsPalazzo Colonna tourSince Palazzo Colonna only offers tours in English on Friday mornings and we weren't landing in Rome until Friday afternoon, we booked a private tour directly through the gallery for Saturday afternoon. Our guide Sara was fantastic! Some of these tours are rather tedious, with lots of info like, "This painting was done by x artist in x year," which bores even me and I have a Master's in Art History. But Sara told us interesting stories and the two hours we were with her flew by. Highly, highly recommend!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 7, 2023
- Coastal642491685502 contributionsYou feel like a guest not a visitor! The art is stunning, the staff line up to smile and welcome you to 'their palace' with obvious pride. We were taken on informative tour by very engaged guide; given umbrellas for shade when walking in garden;hand sanitizer which was a special recipe made on site from lemon trees;no air con but every window open for breeze and invited to take a seat at every stage of tour on original furniture! Just a spectacular experience that I will treasure for years to come. Highly recommend everyone to visit this delightful place with superb staff who try to make everything a pleasant experience for their guests.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2023
- Gary3 contributionsJust a wonderful placeThis is a somewhat hidden gem in Rome. Beautiful art throughout, a great story, and lovely grounds. This was my second visit, and it remains one of my favorite places to visit in Rome. This time, however, I want to mention our tour guide - Rebecca. She was just exceptional. She far, far, far exceeded our expectations. We were there with our six year old, and Rebecca bent over backwards to make sure she had a interesting and entertaining experience - which she did. The entire staff at Galleria Colonna could not have been kinder and more accommodating to us, but Rebecca was just the best. Thank you for being so helpful and gracious. Of course we enjoyed the Galleria - it is a beautiful place to visit. I recommend it to anyone visiting Rome. Even our six year old kept talking about it afterward, going through the souvenir book we had many times.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 22, 2023
- MarissaCooper1990Rome, Italy3 contributionsAbsolutely beautifulI've visited Palazzo Colonna on Friday and I must say that it was absolutely one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen! If you go to Rome you can't miss it. The guided visit made the experience even more interesting, the attention towards the customer is incredibly high. It was very hot so the guide gave us umbrellas and fresh water and I think that's a big plus that helps you enjoy your visit better. The palace is in Barocco style and every part of it is an unexpected and beautiful surprise. Another plus was our guide, Erika : she explained everything to us with passion and detail, making this experience a real dream! Congrats!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2023
- MarkLeepsEdinburgh, United Kingdom95 contributionsAbsolute gemWe loved our tour of Colonna Palace and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others. The Gallery is such a treat to walk through - it is little wonder it was selected for Roman Holiday. Massimo was a delightful guide - charismatic and genuinely passionate about the history of the Colonna family, their impressive art collection, and ornate apartments. A guide is much more engaging experience than an audio guide, and the little touches such as parasols made the visit stand apart.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2023
- Martin S3 contributionsNext time you have a free Friday morning ...Rebecca Harden gave a wonderful two hour guided tour to a small group of us this morning. Having lived in Italy for 14 years I can say that Palazzo Colonna has to be one of the biggest jewels I have had the privilege to visit. Breathtaking. Loved every minute of it. Got a bit of exercise too, climbing up the steps in the garden. A memorable morning very well spent, and for those who paid €30 for a ticket, I'd say worth every penny. Consigliato proprio. Hurrah for Don Prospero.Visited September 2023Traveled soloWritten September 29, 2023

What a delight! We arranged to visit the gardens, gallery and apartments. It was a wonderful experience all around. The aroma from the lemon trees followed you around. Kathleen, an English guide, came up to us to see if she could assist and was a wealth of knowledge. I recommend making sure that you pay to visit the private apartments as well as they are well worth it. After many visits to Rome, I am amazed that this had escaped my attention before.

I had the honor and pleasure of being invited to visit Palazzo Colonna, Isabella's apartments and the garden where Vittoria Colonna (noblewoman and poet) and Michelangelo strolled. I felt like was living through the historical times of a radiant and sumptuous Rome. An experience not to be missed and art masterpieces to be admired in detail. I highly recommend you to visit it and several times if you want to enjoy every nuance. If you’re lucky enough (like us) you can meet Prince Prospero Colonna walking around the galleria.

Everyone I encountered on my visit on a Friday morning was so lovely and pleasant - I cannot stress this point enough as it really was such a great feeling in a place like Rome where there is so much in the way of tours and guides, many of which seem to just be going through the motions with a dead look in their eyes. Our group was about 9 people and I think there may have been one other group of this size there at the same time. There was nothing crowded or unpleasant about the experience.
The Palazzo is located just steps from Piazza Venezia and is very easy to access. It is only open to the public on Friday and Saturday mornings, but is absolutely worth prebooking and planning ahead to visit.
The gentleman who was our English tour expert was so friendly and knowledgable - I got the real sense that he personally loved the Palazzo and sharing his knowledge with us visitors. There was so much background information provided and it all fit together so nicely to make a coherent narrative.
The Palazzo itself is just something else and entirely hard to describe. I've been to a lot of places in Rome, but walking into the main gallery (in which the end scene from Roman Holiday was filmed), I actually said outloud "Holy Crap!" I expected grader to be sure, but it's pretty rare that I'm this stunned. The artworks are great, but there are not as many from the big common art history names as someone with minimal exposure to art history may want to experience (such as at Palazzo Doria Pamphilj), but the experience as a whole overcomes this point.
Having been in multiple other Palazzi in Rome as well as museums in the city, I think it's imperative to point out how spotless this place seemed to be. What I mean is that nothing seemed dull or dusty, neglected or damaged. This is truly a feat when one considers how monument the Palazzo is. Compared to the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj which seems rather shabby, this is an entirely different experience.

Palazzo Colonna remains one of Rome's best-kept secrets. The wealth of the collections, coupled with an exquisite palace and royal treatment of visitors makes for a unique visit. Every single museum guard we spoke with was knowledgeable about the collections, providing us with mini guided tours along the way. And what's unique is that the Colonna family still owns and manages the palace, which gives the place a living feel and human touch. Visiting Palazzo Colonna is an experience almost out of this world.

We spent an amazing day at Palazzo Colonna. Our guide Rebecca was friendly, witty and very knowledgable. We would recommend anyone visiting Rome to spend a few hours at Palazzo Colonna: the interior is stunning, the art is breath-taking and the history of the family is fascinating. It is a quiet place, if you're fed up with busy Rome.

We visited Palazzo Colonna with our 15 year old daughter and our Italian friends, and just when we thought our experience of Rome couldn’t get any better, it did! This palace, open only on Saturdays to those lucky enough to know about it is full of masterpieces, tapestries, sculptures and even a cannonball fired by the French army in 1849 still lodged in the steps of the Great Hall. It has been a private residence of the Colonna family since the end of the 12th century and as such, feels more authentic than a museum. The private apartments of princess Isabella are well worth including in your ticket. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming- we stayed for ages. And ladies- make a point of visiting the powder room, a small gallery in itself complete with gold embossed paper hand towels!

We decided ro check this out after seeing a web site about this palazzo. It is truly a hidden gem in Rome. Each room had some works by incredible artists. The garden is expansive and is literally a breath of fresh air in the city. What a treasure.

This overwhelming collection of Renaissance and baroque art is still a private residence so it’s only open twice a week. I purchased the basic 15 euro ticket because I really wanted to see one painting, Annibale Carracci’s Bean Eater. Which if you’re an art historian is totally worth $15. But there’s a lot of other stuff to see.
None of the other paintings are masterpieces, but many of them are interesting, including the overwrought ceiling frescoes. There are some very nice tapestries in excellent condition — the most interesting was of Artemisia consulting with the architects of the Mausoleum. There’s an insane ebony and ivory cabinet that many elephants perished for. Don’t forget to notice the offensive furniture featuring conquered people holding up tabletops. And there’s a magnificent garden with a fabulous view if you climb to the top.
The staff is extremely professional and welcoming — you feel like a guest in a luxury hotel. There’s a cute cafe in the garden courtyard (which is not THE garden) but I didn’t need sustenance. And they have the world’s nicest hand sanitizer as you go in and out, which they sell in the gift shop. It smells like orange blossoms. So I got roped into buying an 8 euro hand sanitizer, something I forgot to bring with me. It smells delicious!

Exceptional! Where to start? So many great artworks by the biggest artists in a stunning Palazzo. Even though it is obviously the first reason to visit this place, as you will probably read all about it elsewhere, I will share here other aspects. What touched me particularly during this visit is the special quality of the welcome you get at the Palazzo Colonna. Things are done differently here, and you feel that you are in a private home (e. g. instead of ordering you to wear a FFP2 mask, you get offered one). The staff in the rooms is composed of art historians who are really happy to share their knowledge and love for the palace with you. I was so enthralled by the beauty of the palace that I decided to add the Isabelle rooms to the visit…glad I did it because I discovered a more personal side of the palace…and it is less crowded. I loved that you are actually welcome to sit on the period furniture to quietly take in the artworks and magnificence of the rooms. With the lovely bouquets from the garden it feels like you are a guest. Thank you Don Prospero for the fantastic way you open your stunning home to the public !

Hello,
The admission starts at 9 AM and this is what is showing on my ticket. Does it mean that I can pickup my tickets and then return closer to 12PM for the English tour or I have to start my visit at 9AM?
Thank you in advance,

Hello, does it make sense to book the garden tour, if I am visiting in December? Is it possible to add it when I arrive to the Palazzo Colonna (weather dependent)?
Thank you!

I would say go. It's a totally green garden, no flowers. Trees, bushes, grass. As a garden. it's nothing special, at all. However, when you get to the top of the garden, the view is excellent. Plus they have some interesting Roman ruins there, too. Accuweather predicts weather in the high 50's as a high. So if you can endure that, fine. If you can't, why are you going to Rome in December? It will be the same weather everywhere and you walk everywhere in Rome. So go. We enjoyed it, immensely. As far as adding it on when you get there, yes it should be no problem. The Palazzo is only open on Saturdays 9-1:15 with the English tour only at 12PM and I don't remember if that 's for the apartment or the Garden. I would call up and ask them. Sometimes web sites post incorrect schedules and that even goes for the attractions own website. By the way, the apartment tour is nice, too. Worth doing. Have a great time.
