With three of Rome’s most beloved piazzas within a five-minute walk of each other, the Navona/Pantheon/Campo area may be the prettiest and most picturesque area of the city. Yet another must see Church in Rome, we visited this place by accident when we took cover from the rain. The entry is free and the Basilica is very beautiful, I definitely recommend taking a stop to see it, we spent more then an hour inside looking and admiring the interior.

It would be easy to walk past this gem, because it doesn’t look particularly spectacular from the outside and even the lobby area looks a bit dull.

However, once inside the transformation is amazing and it’s so worth making the effort to visit.

The Basilica is located very close to the fruit & vegetable market and not that far from the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument so the chances are, that if you are walking around Rome, you will be walking close by at some point.

For information, the interior of this Basilica features in Act 1 of Puccini’s Tosca: An escaped convict hides here, and the main male character, the artist Cavaradossi who is working in the church, is accused of helping the convict by Scarpia, the Chief of Police. Now Scarpia has an ulterior motive in arresting Cavaradossi, because he has a love interest in Cavaradossi’s girlfriend, the beautiful Tosca. Spoiler alert: They all die in the end.

We happened upon this magnificent basilicas on one of our many walks through central Rome, just near Piazza Novena. Dedicated to Andrew, it provides excellent frescoes of his life and martyrdom. In addition to the frescoes, admire the amazing dome. Take the free audio guide(donation suggested), it is well worth it.

As we wander around Rome, we are blown away by the beauty inside of the may Basilicas in the city. This one was located just around the corner from our hotel.
It is one of the 3 great preaching churches from the 17th C, a chuch being on this site from the 11th C, this one dating from the 1500s. The magnificent interior dates from the 17th C, but has had many restorations

As with quite a few of the other Roman churches / basilicas, it doesn't look that impressive from the exterior.
Once inside however, it is very impressive for sure.
Sant'Andrea della Valle is located on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, just a few steps from the famed Piazza Navona and was named for the nearby residence of Cardinal Andrea della Valle,
This is another great cathedral to see in Rome
The dome, which is Rome's 4th largest, was designed by Maderno while the lantern was overseen by Borromini. The famous facade was added by Carlo Rainaldi.
The last chapel on the left is the Barberini Chapel, which was Puccini's backdrop for the first act of his famous opera, Tosca.
The whole church is so gorgeous inside..it's somewhat overwhelming how beautiful it is on the inside.
Stunning artworks all through including the ceiling.
You wouldn't have guessed from the outside.
This should be on your must-see church list.
It is beautiful and definitely worth the stop.

Opera lovers may have heard of this basilica because the first act of Puccini's Tosca is set there. It is a baroque church which is the seat for the order of the Theatines (the church of the Theatines in Munich, Germany - Theatinerkirche - was modeled after it). It has the third largest dome in Rome, after St. Peter's and the Pantheon. Two popes are buried there (Pius II and III), and one of its chapels was designed by Michelangelo and displays a copy of his famous Pietà, the original of which is in St. Peter's.
You can listen to a very informative audio guide (just about ten minutes long) providing details on the history of the basilica and its impressive paintings. The audio guide is available in many languages and free of charge (but visitors are asked for a donation).
Definitely worth a visit.

This church is one of the most significant in Rome and they offer you an audio guide in return for a donation. It is a lovely place to spend a few minutes or so in the cool, admiring the paintings.

This is one of those churches that do not get as much attention as the famous ones, but is very much deserving of it. If you have the time and you should, as it is open fairly late and is close by the Piazza Navona, you should make the effort to find it and visit. Standing inside, you will marvel at the ability of the people of Rome to churn out one magnificent church after another, sometimes only a few hundred feet from each other. The quality of workmanship, the imaginative design, the grandeur just once again take your breath away and leave you mesmerized. Unfortunately, as often is the case, we got there late and close to closing. We only had perhaps 15 minutes there and I really didn't want to go. In fact, they were basically shoving me out, appreciative of the fact that I adored the place, but wanting to get home.

I also have to applaud the church. They had people there willing to answer questions and a woman who offered us an audio guide, which amazingly cost nothing. I left a donation I was so impressed. Indeed, in most churches, I either buy something or leave a donation, as they are very expensive buildings to maintain and I would like to see them not deteriorate, as so many have. What a pity.

I had to come here after seeing the old film version of Tosca. An exquisite basilica which I believe is open everyday.
