The whole of the church of San Giacomo and the "Cappella delle anime purganti" (Chapel of the souls in purgatory; on the right looking at the facade of the church) is in my view one of the noblest views in the city of Udine.
In fact, the Piazza Matteotti, on which the two buildings overlook, already has a noble appearance, made even more captivating by the intense attendance by the population. Within the square, then, the white complex (for the building material used, the "Istrian stone") of the church and chapel, attracts the eye and introduces a note of further elegance.
It should be noted that the facade of the chapel, despite being two centuries later than the facade of the church (1745 versus 1530 ca), was conceived in total harmony with the latter.
The feeling of elegance continues if you enter the two buildings; the interiors in fact, despite the transformation of the church in Baroque style compared to the original Gothic architecture, are equally pleasant, and rich in works of art.

Piazza San Giacomo is the best square in Udine, worth a five point rating in its own right (see my review), it is the outdoor living room of Udine, but the crown of this Piazza goes to the magnificent 16th century church, Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo, tucked away in the corner of the square. However, this church is closed between 12.00 and 16.00, to be taken into account when planning a visit. Pictures say more than a thousand words. I will add some to this review, an easy five point rating.

The building goes back to the 14th century; the facade was constructed in the 16th century. This beautiful church merits a visit; the inside is also grandiose. The church is divided into two chapels. I could only visit the chapel on the right, because in the chapel on the left a service was in progress; a well attended service, proving that the Chiesa di San Giacomo hasn't lost its core function in the community of Udine. Just sit back in a pew to let the atmosphere do its work. To be recommended.

Gentile utente,

Piazza San Giacomo is my favorite square in Udine and in one corner of this square you find a splendid 16th century church, called "Chiesa di San Giacomo". The attraction of this church is, that chances are, that a service is going on in the left nave of the church (the church consists of to partitions), and that an impression can be gleaned of the real function of a (Catholic) church, contrasting to a visit to most churches, where noisy tourists are the main inhabitants. Furthermore, Chiesa di San Giacomo is richly decorated with impressive religious art. Worth a visit. Plan a visit to Chiesa di San Giacomo carefully, because the church tends to be closed most of the afternoon.

Visiting this beautiful 16th century church on the best square in Udine needs a bit of planning. This church is not always open and when it is open, chances are that a service is in progress in the main nave at the left side. Therefore, when I visited the Chiesa di San Giacomo in 2014, I could only take pictures of the secondary nave on the right side of the building. (Not to be sneezed at. This nave is worth visiting in its own right). Unfortunately, when we wanted to see the main nave, the inner doors of the church were already locked up after the service; however, the next day we went a bit earlier and the service in the main nave was just winding up, so we waited. Yhis planning and waiting was well worth it. The main nave of Chiesa di San Giacome is even more impressive than the secondary nave. See the pictures I added. So, if you want to visit this church, to be recommended, plan the visit right after the daily service and before the lockup for lunch. (And lunch is still from 11.30 to 15.30 in Italy sometimes).

It is a beautiful church and Sunday mass was quite crowded at 10 a.m. The pews and kneelers are fairly uncomfortable , do we sat in chairs at the back. The service was very nice and we followed along the best we could.

In a place like Piazza Giacomo this is definitely most beautiful building. This is a small, charming church in a not so nice beautiful square.

We entered the church and walked around its pretty baroque interior; it was initially built during the 14th century and the facade remade during the 16th century in the Renaissance style while the interior remade in the baroque one during the 17th century. In one of the chapels we also admired a well made nativity scene.

The Chiesa di San Giacomo dates from the 14th century and partially occupies one side of the Piazza San Giacomo or as it is also known as the Piazza Matteotti. There are some good artworks within the church and a pleasing aspect was that there were more parishioners present when I visited than there were tourists.
