Neighborhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighborhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighborhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbors exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

    Great view from its rooftop
A historic church with an imposing dome which faces the Grand Canal and dominates the landscape. Though it’s facade is currently under reconstruction, it’s interior in open and is quite interesting. There is no entrance fee — except for a charge to climb up to its roof for a grand view of the canal and the surroundings. Well worth it!!

Beautiful from all angles, inside and out
This is pretty stunning inside and out. An odd shape for a former Catholic church, the octagon is not used much. The day we were there, unfortunately had scaffolding all over the north side that faces the best places to get photos from the outside. It happens. Inside is special too and the fact that this was a walk in with no fee or ticket was a nice change as well. Beautiful and grand on the inside.

    great
Monumental church (basilica!) on the Punta della Dogana side of the Grand Canal. Hosts paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Giordano, a famous Byzantine icon and impressive marble statuary. Merits the (nice) walk.

We approached via traghetto from St mark's and that in itself was lovely. The building is undergoing restoration but it is still possible to visit and well worth it to see some of the Renaissance art work. Well worth paying a little bit extra to go into the rooms at the back as well to see the paintings there and also the pope's outfits.

San Salute is just minutes from our hotel, so we see it many times a day.

The exterior i named the wedding cake, as it just reminds me of one. Heavily decorated on the outside, take take to just stand in the campo and look up, totally fabulous exterior.

When carnivale is on in February the steps of san salute are always a great place for catch a glimpse and take photo's or carnivale people in their fantastic colourful costumes

Inside is entirely different, quite awesteer, and very grey, but the paintings are fabulous.

Baroque style Roman Catholic Church. We could see it from St.Mark's square. The church was built as a votive offering for Venice's deliverance from the Black Plague and dedicated to Our Lady of Health, Salute. It is a vast, octagonal building with two domes and a pair of picturesque bell towers at the back. at the apex of the pediment stands a statue of the Virgin Mary who presides over the church which was erected in her honor. The main facade is richly decorated by statues of the four evangelists, St. Mark, St Luke, St. Matthew, St John. The interior is octagonal with eight radiating chapels in the row. The three altars to the right of the main entrance are decorated with scenes from the life of Virgin Mary - the Presentation of Our Lady in the Temple, Assumption of Our Lady, and Nativity of Our Lady. The Baroque high altar arrangement shelters an iconic Madonna and Child.

The Basilica was build in gratitude by the people of Venice when their answered prayers to Saint Mary delivered Venice from the horrendous plague that killed a third of its population. The Basilica literally means The Basilica of Saint Mary of Good Health. It is located in the Dorsoduro Barrio and is a beautiful walk to a less frequented side of the Canal.

Fantastic place. Tintoretto painted "Marriage at Cana - 1561"., displayed in the great sacristy, which includes a self-portrait. The most represented artist included in the church is Titian, who painted St. Mark Enthroned with Saints Cosmas, Damian, Sebastian and Roch. This place is possible to reach by vaporetto or by walk. Both possibilities are nice.

This is not an especially attractive church inside, but it is very grandiose in scale and of an unusual octagonal design. The exterior is very striking and the church is in a stunning location, right at the confluence of two canals. Walking to the church, then around the area in which it is built, is a very enjoyable experience, especially on a sunny day. There is no entrance charge.

The church exterior is currently under renovation but we could still enter the church. Inside the church is not very impressive.

There is the option to go up the tower with a guide. The guide took us up the stairs and then unlocked the door for us to enjoy the view. At the top, we could only walk on one side around the dome, which was very tight at points. We spent around 20 minutes up there and considering that there wasn’t a lot of space to move around felt a bit long. The tour cost €8 which we found a bit too much. I understand why they want a guide to accompany you to the top, but I would expect a bit more, e.g., some kind of commentary about the church.

It’s fi what near the Peggy Guggenheim collection (not my cup of tea) and ifvyou are in this part of town well worth a visit. Undergoing some restoration of the facade at present but you can still see inside and there is an option to go up into the cupola if you want. I wouldn’t go out if my way to see it as I have got church overload having been touring Italy for a few weeks but this is one of those buildings most of us will have seen in iconic images of this incredible city so if you are near check it out

We’ve seen a few round churches throughout Europe, but none as beautiful as this one. Entry is free for visitors; however, there is a fee for the sacristy visit. Check their website for both church and sacristy schedule before visiting to make sure it is open. This one is opposite Piazza San Marco on the other side of the grand canal and you can catch a gondola across for €2.00 per person, or walk to one of the bridges that takes you across.
