The area
Address
Neighborhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighborhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighborhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbors exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

Fantastic little chain of mask shops, I believe 3 in total. Service was great and staff very helpful picking out genuine hand made masks for our children.
Be sure to seek out one of these stores because the quality of the masks is so good compared to many of the cheap stands and stores you see throughout Venice.

Great shop for authentic handmade Venetian masks. We were looking for souvenirs of Venice and this shop did not disappoint. Stay away from the Chinese made and fake masks sold in shops around saint Marc’s and the realito bridge. These are the real thing. This is a shop is in a quiet part of town. Definitely worth a trip.

We recently took a mother-daughter trip to Venice, Italy. Our daughters were all between the ages of 14-16. Looking to break up the museum experience, we decided to have our daughters do the ABC's course at Ca' Macana. This experience was the highlight of the trip. Our teacher was Florita (sp?) and she was so incredibly patient with our girls. I know this is somewhat of an expensive activity but it was worth every cent. Although the course generally takes about an hour, we were there for nearly two hours. We never felt rushed and Florita pulled out all the stops for our girls. The finished product was amazing and each of our daughters said that it was their favorite activity of our trip! I highly recommend Ca' Macana. They can make an artist out of anyone!! :)

Best place for authentic Venetian masks. Selection is great and quality is superb. They have something for everyone. Haven’t tried the classes yet, but they seem really fun. A must see.

Cà Macana has a few locations in Venice, where you can even decorate your own papier mache mask to your liking. The company designed masks for Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, and have very reasonable prices for authentic work. You're also allowed to take pictures in the masks (most stores forbid it) so it's a fun shopping destination. You can also decorate your own mask... when I return to Venice, I'm definitely going to do it! There’s even an online shop if you’re looking to decorate your place or for a costume ball.

My biggest tip for purchasing a mask is to shop around. My boyfriend picked up the first one he saw at Leon d’Oro near the Ponte di Rialto, and ended up finding the same one at Cà Macana for half the price! As long as you fall in love with an artisan’s work. It’s easy to spot the difference between a mass-produced imported product from an authentic Venetian mask. Look for irregularities in the underside and decoration, and make sure that your mask looks unique from other similar models in the shop- it should be one of a kind!

This mask shop has something for everyone, and more to the point when you are in Venice-at every price. Starting around 19 euros and going up to 120+, there are masks covering every inch of space in the workshop I visited in Dorsoduro, and if you can't find something there visit the larger workshops around the city. The staff was helpful, letting me spend way too long deciding what I wanted without making me feel burdensome, and carefully packing my purchases for the trip home. The stuff here is far better than the by-comparison unoriginal and cheap looking tat available in the Piazza San Marco. Tip-if you by a rolling venice card don't forget to show it for a 10% discount.

We did a mask making class here. It was a wonderful experience. We thoroughly enjoyed it! First, Nancy gives a wonderful presentation on the history of masks in Venetian culture and then you select from a large selection of masks. You are guided through each of the steps of decorating your mask, including the final touch - gold and silver metallic paints which add an amazing pizzazz to your mask (and is surprisingly easy to work with.) Highly recommended - our kids wanted to do it again the next day!

I booked a two hour session at Ca Macana for myself and my two children. As my children do not speak Italian, I asked for an English speaking member of their team. In comparison with the Italian one hour lesson, this is very expensive - the lady we had was nice enough, but her English was not really up to much. On several occasions my children looked puzzled and did not quite understand. I admit that when traveling we should not expect everyone to master foreign languages perfectly, but it seems to me that when you are paying anything between two and three times the amount of a lesson in Italian you might perhaps expect a bit more than your average globish. All in all we had a good time, but I did go away with the sneaky feeling that this was a good money spinning exercise for the shop. And I did not appreciate the rather unpleasant comment made about me in Italian by one of the Italian members of staff, who did not realize that I both speak and understand her language. Conclusion - nice activity for the children, but not my best memory of Venice.

We visited several mask shops during our 2 night stay in Venice. We liked the selection at Ca'Macana best and returned there to purchase a bunch of masks, from inexpensive magnetized versions to an elaborately decorated keepsake. The shop staff wrapped our purchases carefully, and everything made it back to the States undamaged.

However, when we unwrapped our goodies, I discovered that the keepsake mask we had purchased had somehow been left out of the bag. I emailed Ca'Macana, and they promptly replied that they had found the mask still in the shop and would mail it to me at no charge. We received the mask within a couple of weeks, and we were thrilled. Awesome service!

Highly recommend shopping at Ca'Macana when you're in Venice!
