This bridge was previously called the Porta Napoli, i.e. "Bridge of the Neapolitan gate", because it faces the road to Naples. The gate was demolished along with the citadel at the end of the XIX century after the Risorgimento as part of the deprivation of Taranto's militaristic spirit. It is a pity that there are fewer attractions! The current bridge was built on this site after the previous X-century bridge was demolished by a flood in 1883.
