About
The National Archaeological Museum of Taranto is ones of the most important in Italy and was founded in 1887. The Museum is located from the beginning in a building named as Convent of S. Pasquale or of the Alcantarini monks, erected in mid-18th century. The structure has been expanded during the 20th century by the erection of the Northern wing, named Ala Ceschi. On the 29 July 2016 was opened the second floor. The MArTA in his magnificent new look HAS BEEN RETURNED TO THE PUBLIC!. It's a leap into history: a story of Taranto and the territory. The new exhibition traces the history of men and women from the Paleolithic until the IV century B.C; completing the exhibition of the first floor of the museum

Although the exhibits themselves were marvellous, the experience with the staff and tickets was horrendous. Even though the museum is large and there were few tickets, you had to book and pay online, which included a lengthy process of creating an account. The staff were rigid in timings and unfortunately you could not move to the next floor until the time had expired which made no sense given there was only 10 people in the whole museum. After, the worker would follow at a distance of metre or two throughout the whole exhibition. It was a deeply uncomfortable experience. It is impossible to enjoy the wonderful exhibits because of the obsequious and deeply uninterested staff. Not recommended unfortunately.

I worked my way through the unnecessarily convoluted process of registering an online account only to receive an error message twice. I didn't see any point in turning up at the museum given the unhelpfulness of the ticket office reported by others. A pity as Taranto is hardly thronging with tourists and this sort of service will not improve its appeal.

Probably the nicest museum of its type south of Naples (and perhaps better than that in Naples), the MARTA takes you through the history of Taranto from pre-history up to about the 17th/18th century, with a huge focus on materials from the Greek and, to a lesser extent, Roman era. The layout is impressively simple and easy to understand. Although there are a LOT of things to see, you can easily skip to the next topic if you're not interested in something. The informational signage is in both Italian and English, very well translated. In addition, throughout the museum there are small kiosks with more detailed information on the exhibits around you. Highly recommended and definitely worth a 2-hour visit.

Taranto’s reputation as a tourist location is not that great, since much of the city’s recent life has been dominated by industrial development and naval occupation. But, if you delve further into the past there is a rich history there, even dating back to Spartan times. This museum certainly does the ancient and classical history of Taranto justice, with exceptional finds on display in a really well presented museum. I was a bit rushed and so just cherry picked the main exhibits which are shown on a helpful leaflet that comes free with your admission. Look out for the bronze Zeus in the second floor, and the terracotta bust of a woman which seems to have become the symbol of the museum. There are also some terrific mosaics, depicting vivid scenes of wild animals on the hunt. This museum goes a long way to enhancing the reputation of Taranto. If you enjoyed the visit, then seek out the Greek Columns on the far side of the Piazza Garibaldi from the Castello to see what remains of the ancient city in situ.

Not even a fifth of the original museum has been reopened to the public with all the major pieces missing but one still has to pay the full amount to enter. The explanation one gets is that the funds assigned have been diverted to another project! So what!? Very sad to see how italy is mismanaging its' heritage.

I've visited hundreds (if not thousands) of museums and galleries in my life (I work in the art world), and this is one of my favorite museums in the world. I only had 1 day in the museum, but I wish I could spend an entire week. It has an absolutely incredible collection, and it is in a beautiful building full of history. It is a GEM.

Absolutely worth visiting if you are in Puglia as a region or about an hour away from Taranto. The whole museum is bi-lingual, with inscriptions in Italian and English, and everything is really well explained. The museum has two floors you can visit, and they have a bit of an eclectic "one floor at a time open" policy, but it's not really a huge issue. The collection itself is fantastic and has many many objects that are either beautiful or just plain interesting or simply wow. It contains objects from the Greek and roman times aswell, so one can follow the cultural evolution quite well

The Museo Archiologico has a very nice Prehistoric, Roman and Greek collection and all the artifacts are housed in modern glass vitrines with Italian and English descriptions but the problem with the place is that at any given time only one of three floors is actually open. This has to do with budgetary constraints of the Italian Government that only allows to hire and pay museum staff for a single floor. To be fair, they point this out to you before you buy the ticket (€8 each) but the experience is nevertheless a bit weird. When we got there at around Noon only Floor 1 was open for another 45 minutes. If you were not done by the end of that, that was just tough luck. All visitors were ushered out of Floor 1 by the staff and told that now Floor 3 was open. We had only 15 minutes to inspect the entire Floor 3 as we had a 1pm lunch reservation which was of course too little time. So, if you want to see all three floors you have to spend a minimum of three hours in the place and the viewing will not be chronological to history. We, for example, started with the Greek period and later in saw the prehistoric exhibits. Restrooms are clean but do not expect toilet paper or paper towels. They probably were also axed as a result of the budget constraints. Nevertheless definetely worth a visit if you are into Greek art and floor Mosaiks.

This is one of the best Museums I have seen (and I used to work in one). The quality and breadth of the collection is breathtaking. The excellent labelling is in Italian and English. The lighting, presentation and layout are all excellent. But it is the objects which make it so special. Visit if you possibly can.

This is a wonderful museum in the new town of Taranto just over the swing bridge by the Castello Aragonese. The collection is housed over two floors and covers neolithic, Greek and Roman artefacts from around the Taranto area. It's an amazingly comprehensive and beautiful collection of pottery, statues, tools, glass, jewellery and metalwork, all clearly labelled in Italian and English The gallery is modern with toilets on each floor. They currently have a temporary exhibition about walking the Appian way from Rome to Brindisi. There is a small shop and drinks machines in the main entrance. The new entrance is round the back of the old building. There is parking on the streets around. Highly recommended.
