Bizarre architecture
2020. szept.
This is a must. It is not everyday you get to see such a bizarre architecture. Impossible to miss! Also, not to miss the inside.

Never seen anything like it before!
2020. febr.
We visited Syracuse and the Isle of Ortigia for the day. From the train station we explored Syracuse before heading to Ortigia and stumbled upon this little gem of a cathedral. Very unusual, very modern and quite beautiful. Inside is one big empty space with the chapels situated on the outside of this circular interior. Some of these chapels have been decorated with paintings done by children. You can walk downstairs to see the next level below. There is no admission charge. Highly recommend a visit this cathedral is lovely and the modern architecture is beautiful

Beautiful church
2019. okt.
This church is in Siracusa, if you are staying in Ortigia it is just a 15 minute bus ride away. It is in a nice neighborhood with some nice restaurants so it was well worth the trip.

Peaceful and in lovely grounds
2019. okt.
This is a new landmark for Syracuse. You can see it from miles around and it is a useful navigational aid. Inside it is peaceful and welcoming. There is no problem with you going in to sit down and absorb the atmosphere. I'm not really a fan of modern weird buildings, but this one really works. The gardens around the building are well maintained too, and there were some lovely flowering trees when I visited in October.

Impressive inside and out, and perhaps miraculous?
2019. aug.
We arrived without being aware of the theological significance of this great basilica, which makes such an impact on the skyline of Siracusa. We soon learned that the huge, conical church is meant to resemble a teardrop; for that is its function - to provide a venue for pilgrims to come and pray at the site of the miracle of Siracusa -the weeping madonna. In August 1953 a newly married couple saw tears running down the fact of the mass-produced plaque of the virgin Mary someone had given them as a wedding present. Obviously, one's instinct is to be sceptical about this, but apparently the tears were analysed as real human tears at the time, and strictly scrutinised. The couple would have no motive for creating a fake. It is the only "weeping madonna" recognised by the Roman Catholic Church. So is there something in it? The church was conscetrated by Pope John Paul II in 1994 to house the plaque. The allegedly miraculous image is displayed and can be approached by pilgrims. The building is cavernous and strangely impressive. It has a crypt and many ancillary rooms to accommodate pilgrimages.

Worth a visit!
2019. máj. • Baráti
A couple claimed they saw a statue of the Madonna crying and subsequently, a church was built on the site. Outside itbresembles a large tent but once inside, it has a peaceful aura. The crypts, side chapels, icons and tapestries are all worth investigating. The basilica sits in a large open space. There is a souvenir shop and a collectible penny machine. Well worth it if time permits.

A big disappointment

I expected more from this. I thought I would be wowed by the architecture and atmosphere. I can appreciate the architecture but there was, for me, nothing church about it

Beautiful modern architecture has become a monument visible across the city
2019. máj. • Romantikus
Dicey story about Sicilian couple who claim that a statue of madonna shed tears so they built a church there. The architecture is beautiful and can be seen from quite a distance including from Ortigia. Interior equally beautiful. Stained glass not so.
