Efficient easy to use

Clean efficient station with a tram stop outside. I was travelling from the airport to Sienna and it was easy. Tram from the airport to SMN station and then local train to Sienna for €9. I noticed someone from the UK has mentioned you can’t use bank cards from the UK to pay online for tickets once you’re in Italy nor at the station ticket machines? I have been to Italy many times and have never found this to be the case. I regularly buy tickets online whilst in Italy and did so this time to go to Milan. I also used my card in the tickets machines in stations without any problems, so I’m not sure why this person had a problem? The Frecciarossa also runs from this station. This is one of the high speed trains (we travelled at 300 kph at one point) which I caught to Milan, shaving nearly 3 hours off the time taken by the local train.

Arrive from Roma Termini
2020. márc.
We took the train from Roma termini to Florence and arrived mid morning. With all Italian cities, street signs are not the best and trying to find our hotel took a little time. The Terminal was under construction so that may have caused some of the problem. We also used this station for trip from Florence to Bologna. The train was cancelled and we had to rebook with later train. The main problem sitting in the terminal was that its is open and breezy. It wasn't hot so we got chilled. Otherwise terminal was clean and neat.

Train Station
2020. márc.
One stop away from the Utica (T2Tram), this is the central train station for Florence. Around the corner is the Sita bus station. Stores and restarants are on the lower level.

OK

Another average train station. Good signage and announcements. A bit dirty. Could use more car drop off space so the line to drop off isn't as long.

Busy Rail Station
2020. febr. • Egyszemélyes
This is a sprawling trail station located very close to many sights in Florence. It’s about 2/3-3/4mi from the station to the Arno River. I purchased outgoing tickets at the TrenItalia ticket office which was easy and efficient. All staff members inside the station are multilingual. Security is active and present. The taxi rank is right outside to the left - very organized and hassle free.

Interesting Train Station
2019. dec.
Interesting train station design. Can't tell if this is Art Decco or something else. It was a very close walk from the train station to our hotel (Palazzo Castri). Station has a few places to eat, but not many.

Quick and Easy

Online tickets said €100 for non-stop to Rome. These must have been round trip because we ended up paying €100 for two one way tickets. The train station is a busy place-Make sure to stamp your tickets after you purchase!

Sweltering on summer days! Buy advance tickets online if you're concerned about whipping out cash & cards in public.
2019. jún.
Florence’s main station is open to the fresh air which is fantastic for the environment, but it is not a cool space. You cannot imagine the heat in the station at 5pm on a hot summer day!

It is lovely that the station retains much of its 1930’s charm, but little things can be done to upgrade while retaining the architectural integrity yet alleviating the discomfort that many passengers endure here. For example, ceiling or industrial fans would be a welcome environmentally-friendly, simple and affordable addition.

There is no convenient general seating area where you can wait comfortably in sight of the departure boards, so commuters end up sitting on the floor, standing or simply squashed uncomfortably along the tiniest slanted ledge at the base of the glass partitions.

If like us you’ve read the many stories about scams and pickpockets frequenting this and many other stations in Italy before embarking upon your trip, then you will feel rather unsafe here. We noticed 3 police officers at the main entrance, but there was a noticeable lack of them inside the station.

With most people standing, you are easy game for getting your pockets picked so ladies, use a crossbody bag and keep it in front of you and gents keep your wallets in a front pants pocket.

We found the service quite good at the train kiosks, but for first time visitors it can be quite confusing as it is not like the UK where you go to one ticket counter and they can issue you tickets for any company or service. In Italy you must purchase tickets from each company separately.

It helps to go online and watch the numerous videos about the ins and outs of travelling by train and the various methods and machines you can use to purchase your tickets. We bought one leg of our journey online but we did not notice any real savings with the advance purchase.

But one advantage of going so is that it saves the hassle of having to line up to make your purchase in a busy station and to whip out your money or credit cards in public.

For a station that is used by millions of tourists and locals each year, I guess we expected something grander, especially for Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region and the famed city of art and love.

Now this is what you call a starting point
2019. szept.
We travelled from pisa to Florence at a cost of €7 each and the train was a little delayed and clean. A beautiful starting point to explore the city. There are plenty of on the ground staff to help you and give positive advice. The one thing you need to be aware of is the PICKPOCKETS. our train was delayed because of a pickpocket on our service but this was dealt with brilliantly by the on board staff and had called along the line to next station where the police were waiting. Don’t let this put you off travelling on their system. We used it multiple times and each time was a positive experience to be getting about

Decent facilities and helpful staff
2019. szept.
Arriving in the evening from Pisa, we fond it a little confusing and pretty busy. We went pack days later having decided to take the train to Venice. There are 2 rail companies, ItaliaRail for the fast trains and TrenItalia for the local trains. We saw customer service staff for Italia Rail in the ticket area helping people so asked for info and she helped us buy tickets in the correct machine. (There is a review recently that says the machines dont take overseas visa/mastercard - I paid by Barclaycard without any problem in the machines for both ItaliaRail and TrenItalia.) We also used the machines to by local tickets for our return to Pisa. For that trip we had to validate our ticket using a small machine by the platform. We did see someone removed from the train for not having a ticket and also a tourist hadnt validated their ticket and got a telling off from the conductor.

Plenty of shops for a small station. Arrival and departure boards very good. Some announcements were in English.

Downside: Seats in the big ticket area but no seats out by the platforms. Toilets are manned but cost 1Euro. The train to Pisa was packed and was a scramble to get on, especially with cases, but we sat upstairs and just put cases on seats or in the aisle. While customer service staff were great, the counter staff we encountered not so great.
