Rough, very rough...

I struggle to understand what anyone giving 4 or 5 stars was thinking. Probably they have never been in any halfdecent museum anywhere outside of Italy. This museum is so many years behind anything acceptable in terms of concept and presentation...also, an awful amount of specimens are replicas. This is of in some cases, but there's replicas of stuff that doesn't even make sense.
The so-called botanical garden hasn't been taken care of for months. You almost need a machete, and there's just thousands of mosquitoes hunting you down for that reason.
Why 2 and not 1 star? Well, the staff are super nice, the whale-skeletons are impressive (a complete 20 metre long finback whale), and a few things were nice, like the bonsai collection and the retro way some stuffed animals where presented. Still, you'd be really bored to visit and pay the full price.

Lovely marine hall

I visited the botanic section - needs some care but I liked its wild look.
I was impressed with the lovely hall on marine life - the whale skeletons are incredible and the diorama especially the one with dolphins was superb.

A good educational facility, but not of national interest (with some exceptions), much less international

To appreciate this museum, it must be understood that this is an eminently didactic facility, with a few original pieces; remarkable for a city of medium size as Livorno (and my score takes into account this consideration), but not of national interest, much less international.
From the educational point of view it is quite effective and rich. For example, the origins of the human species are well lighted up. But please don't expect authentic skulls, bones or other human remains. The original parts are naturally more numerous in the zoological section, but this isn't difficult to occur even in a provincial museum.
Probably the most outstanding part of the museum is that of the outbuilding on the sea, by a massive whale skeleton 29.5 mts in length, and even more by the presence of huge jars of wine recovered from a Roman ship near the nearby Gorgona island (but of the ship, in wood, nothing has survived). These jars, precisely because of their size, were difficult to handle, then in Roman times were used only since 50 BC until 50 AD roughly. They are therefore much rarer than traditional "amphorae vinariae".
Finally, the botanical garden at the time of our visit proved not very well maintained, in particular as regards the botanical-pharmaceutical section.

Would agree that more could be made of the supposed Botanical Garden and the garden area in general as both looked a little dreary on the day we visited. The Botanical Garden was much smaller than we had expected, really just a small area of the overall villa grounds.
What we did enjoy were some of the indoor exhibits. There were several rooms, including Mankind and Man of the Mediterranean, Geopaleontology, Evolution from fish to mammals, and Invetebrates. Some of the exhibits were very well displayed others less so. The Hall of the Sea was poorly lighted but the 19.6 metre Fin whale was still impressive. We didn't visit the Planetarium.
Although not a must see in Livorno, if passing nearby and you have a Livorno Card, entrance is free so worth looking in for a short time. Children would love it especially on a poor weather day.

Not Impressive

This was another one of the advertised "must see" by the hop on hop off. They tell you there is an entrance discount, if you show them your hop on hop off ticket. Someone forgot to tell the lady that took the money. She said that was the discount price, later found out it was the regular price!
There are some nice things, but not worth the trip.
Some of the exhibits were not lighted enough.
I did not like this place. There was a couple following us (four people from the tour) they said they were guides. The other couple asked them a question and they just giggled.
