A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
How to get there

Except for the air conditioner that wasn't working, everything in this wine bar is perfect. A large range of very good wines and the wine of the day is only €2.50 for a very big glass!! Sommelier Joana is very knowledgeable, friendly and humble.

I know nothing about port wine, but I decided to give it a shot while visiting Lisbon. Stopped in to the Portugal Wine Room, and Zade (I hope I got that right) gave me a right education. She knew her stuff about all kinds of wine and offered me a fantastic sampling. The entire place seemed to have a nice selection of wines and different food options as well. If you're a beginner like me or, I trust, a more seasoned port drinker, this is definitely the place to visit.

We went there for some tapas and wine but after 2 glasses the owner told us that they were closing as they are actually a shop and have no license to be open after 10pm. For eating they only had some cheese and cold meat that were ok. The wine was interesting but I was really disappointed that the owner didn't tell us that they would be closing soon.

We came across this wine bar by chance during the day and got talking to a very friendly girl who explained the wine tasting experience on offer. We came back early one evening and really enjoyed it. Great wines and port and yummy tapas too!

Ask for a suggestion and most certainly you'll get a good advice and even a budget price. Look for their tapas, if you're willing to have a glass on the smallish (but cosy) terrace.

After looking for a wine bar we could walk to from our hotel near the airport, we settled on this one and we were not disappointed! The staff was very friendly, fluent in English, and incredibly knowledgeable. If you want to try local wines and a few local tapas, make sure to stop at the Portugal Wine Room. You'll be glad you did.
