A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

In front of it is a statue of St Anthony - when we were there 3 guys tried to throw small coins into St. Anthony hands. Next to the church is wall full of written/printed plates in many languages which are requests to find good wife or to have good marriage as this saint is a patron of marriage and family. Apparently the church is built on the same place where the saint was born. There is also a museum dedicated to St Anthony but we didn't visit it. Inside the church is full of light which was an exception from other churches we saw. It's worth to visit it - all churches in Lisbon are amazing.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 11, 2023

There is a very cool, underground chapel to mark where St. Anthony was born that worshippers can spend a peaceful moment in. A quiet church with no large crowds when I stopped by so ideal place to contemplate and meditate.Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten December 6, 2023

The actual spot where the saint was born is located underneath the church and is accessible by climbing down some stairs (not too steep or too long). Pope John Paull II prayed at this spot during his visit in 1982. There is a lovely tiled sacristy to admire as well and a nice little gift shop. Don’t forget to visit as well the Cathedral of Lisbon, just yards away. That is where St. Anthony was baptized.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 5, 2024

The Santo António Church is a religious building. It is one of the main monuments in Lagos, and is known for its interior richness in tile panels and gilt carving.Attached to the church building is the Lagos Municipal Museum. This Church rises over the place where St. Anthony was born, before he left the world as a preacher, eventually dying in Padua. The current temple was built into the year 1767 on the site where a chapel has existed since the 15th century. It offers elements as the image of the patron saint, spared by the earthquake, the crypt with his birthplace and the canvas representing Saint Anthony with the most authentic features that are preserved. It was visited by Pope St. John Paul II in the year 1982.

This patron Saint has a special significance in our family, as we were married and both our kids baptized in his Church in our hometown Belgrade, Serbia.
Therefore, every time I'm in Lisbon (and this was my third time) I pay my respects here visiting this beautiful Baroque Church.
Lisbon's San Antonio is set at the foot of Alfama oldest part of town, just steps before the oldest Se Cathedral.
It's a classic Baroque 18c Church (rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, the original dates back to 15c) on the place where St. Anthony was born in 1195, marked with the crypt beneath the Church ground level. Beside is a plaque of Pope John Paul II visit.

Near Se in Lisbon is the Igreja de Santo Antonio, built exactly at the birthplace of the saint. The church was built in 1767 according to the design of the architect Mateus Vicente de Oliveira. Inside, paintings by Pedro Alexandrino and sculptures, in particular the wooden image of St. Anthony on the main altar. In the sacristy, the polychrome azulejos coating of Real Fabrica do Rato from the beginning of the 19th century is distinguished. In the basement of the church there is a crypt marking the birthplace of the saint. It is one of the most important monuments of the city, both for visitors and for Lisboners.

Although he is best known as Saint Anthony of Padua, this beloved Portugal saint was born in Lisbon in 1195. A small underground chapel in the Church of Saint Anthony marks the spot of his birth. Saint Anthony is revered as a matchmaker, protector of young brides, and patron of the lost and found. Our guide told us that Mass marriages known as "St. Anthony's Weddings" are held here during the June St. Anthony's Day celebrations. The Church is located across the street from the Cathedral where the saint was baptized. Tradition says you will find a better partner if you can land a coin in the book St. Anthony is holding (statue located outside in front of the St. Anthony church). No, we didn’t try, probably best not to do when you are with your current significant other. Free entry.

Beautiful church built over the birthplace of St. Anthony. There is a lovely subterranean chapel built over the alleged birthplace that worshippers can spend contemplative time in front of. If you're looking for a perfect gift for the St. Anthony fan in your life then the church shop has a lovely array of rosaries and memorabilia all of which can be blessed by the priest.

Right by the cathedral. Not nearly as small as it looks from the outside. Fairly attractive and tasteful inside. I’d even say it has a peaceful, serence atmosphere. I like it. You could spend 10, maybe 15 minutes here, before you run to the cathedral.

Lovely calming place as one would expect. Look out for the Monks chairs part way down on the right towards the alter. Interesting design where they were able to sit or with the tilt of the seat to stand while resting on the tilted seat. A bit like we use to do as kids in the cinema when we wanted to sit higher up. Interesting cavrings underneath the seats which might surprise some church goers!!! Naughty Monks!!
Entry to the cathedrel is free but there are some areas you will have to pay to see.

More or less half an hour. Depending on your attention to the details. If you want to go deeper, maybe more time. But i think between 30-45'.

Hi, we are visiting Lisbon next week and wanted advice on what to expect with the weather, is it warm enough this time of year for shorts in the day or would jeans be better, all weather channels show different forecasts

I think that google forecast is one of the best. Just type "lisbon weather" and it shows about 7 days in advance in the top of the page.
I watch it all the day when I travel somewhere or even at home and it rarely doesn't happend like they say.
