Pastry shops abound so be sure to try some of these delicious local specialties. There is a "bakery row" with many shops to choose from.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 28, 2023

I wish I could have sampled the restaurants and bars an the very warm day, but I did get the flavour of the town. Very pleasant stay.Visited May 2023Written July 12, 2023

Some of the narrow streets were so steep we couldn't even go down them. We walked around till our guide picked us up.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 17, 2023
- Caron GBirmingham, United Kingdom96 contributionsEnchanting historic townWe took the train to Sintra as our hotel was on the main Oriente train line so it only took 35 minutes. It's a pleasant 20 minute walk from Sintra train station to the historic centre. The centre is busy even in January but it's easy to stroll around and get some great photo opportunities. Obviously it's a bit hilly if you decide to walk to the palaces from the town and some are 1 hour walk. We didn't have time but still enjoyed our time in the town.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 1, 2024

The historic town of Sintra is nestled among several steep hills dominated by the Moorish castle and Pena palace.
It's a beautiful small compact area to spend a couple of hours wandering its streets - cute cafes, shops, picturesque alleys,...just beautiful.

Sintra has so many great things to see, including it’s historic district. I suppose it’s hard to enjoy and appreciate it during high season or when it’s crowded. So rather than visiting as a day trip from Lisbon, stay in Sintra and enjoy a stroll through the historic district in the morning or evening, when crowds are light.

This town is only 40 minutes from Lisbon but looks like a million miles away from Portugal. There are many palaces and buildings that would look more comfortable in Bavarian picture postcard. The town has many nice walks through the gardens and woods as well through the winding old town. Lots to see and do

There really is not much to actually see so budget less than an hour to wander around. Its’ extremely touristy with tons of restaurants, overpriced souvenir shops & hordes of tourists - we hated it.
Save your time to see the palace, Quinta & Castelo as these are the best attractions & much worthier of your time.

Real enjoyed the center of town. It's like being in a part of Disneyland that's a little town square. The Palace is in the background and people everywhere. I know that may turn off some people but we found it charming. All around are gorgeous houses and the hills are covered with parks, trees, flowers. The place is "perfect" Disneyland.
The second night we were there we ate in the square and by about 7 it was nearly empty except for people eating.

We loved our day trip to Sintra! It's a beautiful small town in the hills of Portugal. The train from Lisbon is quick and easy. Be sure to explore some of the castles and palaces, but leave time to wander the narrow cobblestoned streets, lined with shops and cafes. It's a charming place to spend a day! Also, if you have reusable water bottles, be sure to fill up at some of the natural springs around town!

The area is easy to get around without a guide. It’s chock full of tourists from all over carrying their lonely planet guidebook. Just ask one of them if you need help or bring your own guidebook.
When we went the temperatures were cooler than normal. Around the Castle it can be cool and windy. Be prepared for changing temperatures and wear shoes for walking on cobblestones

Don’t waste your time and money on this tourist trap. To crowded. The infrastructure cannot cope with this kind of mass tourism (low season!) both in public transport as in Pena castle. Despite of timeslots one has to queue up for over an hour. Once inside, the same queue continues throughout the whole castle. And its really not breathtaking. Tried to get to another castle, however to little space in the small bus (435) after waiting for more than half an hour. Left thes place early, completely disilliusioned.

Good morning! Sintra is a beautiful place but difficult to park. The best spot will be on the way between São Pedro de Sintra and Vila Velha!

Just got back from Sintra and I got a perfectly adequate FREE map from the coffee shop right opposite the station (main entrance)

Hi. I will be staying in Sintra in August and will have to drive around the town as I will be transporting my family, some of whom cannot walk far. But I'm worried about the level of traffic - just how bad is it? Is it slow, or gridlocked, or in-between? Thanks.

Hi, having just visited Sintra, I would highly recommend you hire a private guide, we used Wonder Vans and were so happy we did. Tomas lives in the area and knew the streets and how to navigate and could just drop us off at the entrance the sites.
I would be very stressed if I was driving as the streets are very narrow and many are one way. Apparently there are up to 25,000 people/day during the summer. Tomas has a special pass which allows you to purchase skip the line tickets on the day you visit, which is great.
Make sure you visit Quinta da Regeleira it’s a magical place. Hope you enjoy your Sintra trip.
