The church was built between 1705-1710, on the site of the ‘miraculous’ appearance of a black cross in 1504. The baroque exterior features bare stone and white walls, with a domed roof and bell tower. Inside, the impressive domed ceiling towers above the centre of the church and impressive gilded woodwork draw the eyes to the main altar and two side altars. Several of the internal walls are covered in blue and white azulejo tiles, depicting various religious scenes. Higher on the walls, on either side of the altar, are several panels with oil paintings. Together, they form an impressive sight. The left-side altar features an oak sculpture of Jesus, carrying a cross. A figure of Mary, with a sword piercing her heart, adorns the right-side altar. There is no admission fee to enter the church.

I've seen large and massive churches, as well as small ones. I found this church really cute, which may not be the appropriate description but cannot think of the proper adjective. I was not able to get any pictures of the interior because there was a mass going on. I did manage to take pictures of the exterior. There was a celebration going on within and outside the church. It must have been like a Thanksgiving celebration since the participants had baskets, which they brought inside the church.

When in Barcelos, find some time to visit the church.

Before visiting (or while you are there) be sure to gather information regarding the history of this church (ie: appearance of a cross in the soil in 1504 and the Feast of the Crosses held on May 3rd every year). Dating back to 1704, the octagonal shape is quite unique to the area (more in line with Templar churches build to replicate the style of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem). Located in the main square - Largo da Porta Nova.

Bom Jesus da Cruz is one of the churches located in Barcelos, in the North of Portugal. It is built in a typical portuguese-style and it is in a big square with a garden, so you can see it from there. Very beautiful church inside and outside.

A must stop while in Barcelos. this church dates back to 1704 with an octagonal shape. It is just one of those unique historical buildings with a a tie to a legend of a miraculous appereance of a cross in the soil of a marquet square next door. The interior of the church will put you in the proper spirit of the Camino.

This church and its gardens dominate the city's promenade. Beautiful and majestic. A sight not to be missed.

The small church is located right in the center. Being there you should enter it; inside is waiting for you a very harmonious baroque - the decoration is based in high quality golden carved wood and blue and white glazed tiles. Before leaving the church be sure that you don’t miss the image of Our Lady dressed as a pilgrim and the glazed tile panels next to it where the characters have six toes in each foot (it seems that the painter had also that characteristic). Enjoy!

On top of the hill, live a special church, a stunning church in fact. With it wonderful decoration, religious artifacts and it very calm atmosphere.

Walk around it and take it all in and the bonus is, its cool.

A great end to a really interesting trip.
