One of the most attractive Baroque churches in Portugal is an organic ensemble with a geometrically laid out garden on Largo do Brasil. It's hard to believe, but this harmony is built at different times. The Church of Our Lady of Consolation and the Holy Steps was built in the early 18th century. Two flanking bell towers were built a century later. And the design of the garden, judging by the photos, is changed annually. Excellent visual perspective is obtained. Although if you stand at the beginning of the garden with a view of the church, you can see that a perfectly straight line cutting through the rhombuses of the garden and the center of the church did not work.

At the historic center of Guimarães, right between the "Museu Alberto Sampaio" and the "Igreja da Consolação e dos Santos Passos", an esplanade - with manicured gardens and lawns - will catch your attention. This is "Largo República do Brasil", a beautiful square! Take your time, visit the museum, the church, and stroll along the square, with its fountains, sculptures and lovely gardens. Great pictures to take home. Enjoy!

This is a stunning garden! We came across it as we wandered around Guimaraes visiting various sites. It is so beautiful that we walked up and down a couple of times and sat down by the side to rest. This lovely Square has a lot of history behind it. As the name suggests it denotes a connection, a special relationship with Brazil. It honours and commemorates the proclamation of Republican government in Brazil, on 15 November, 1889. Portugal is the country that founded Brazil as a colony back in the year 1500! There are several shops around the area, although, curiously, not as many as you would expect. However there are cafes and restaurants where you can sit down and enjoy your drink or whatever you choose to eat, in peace and quiet, whilst watching the world go by and at the same time enjoying the great views before you. We did this from the top end of the Square and it was absolutely great.

I happened to come across this beautifully landscaped square framing a magnificent church flanked by two slender bell towers. I was mesmerized by the overall view and symmetrical design of the colorful flower beds, manicured box hedges, and lawns. Beautiful! The square is just a short walk from the historic center of the city.

It locate beside the historic center of Guimareas, walk-able from the city center. The view towards the church is really beautiful. And of course, it does not require any ticket.

With the impressive twin-towered Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolacao e Santos Passos at its base, this is an attractive square in the modern part of the city centre.

As well as the church, the main feature here is the garden with its low, manicured hedges. The garden is certainly nice to look at, but they surely missed a trick by not including paths to stroll round it and benches from which to enjoy it.

Gorgeous garden on the way to the castle. It's large and very green and inviting and we took a break here to relax in the loveliness. A pretty park.

We find this square in the way between the train station and the castle of Guimarães. A beautiful square with a well maintained garden.

In this historical city a more recent Largo is the new center of the city. Nice perspective and beautifully maintained.
