We stopped here on a Monday and the palace was closed. Instead we wandered through the shady and green gardens.
There are some fountains, and nice and peaceful spots to sit down and relax.
Such a nice little getaway from the noice of the city.

Here is what you need to know. The palace and the garden are free to roam on the exterior. The interior is no longer a palace but offices and exhibit spaces. The garden is beautifully designed but needs a bit of repairs and care. We bought the Guimaraes pass for 18 eu (good for 4 days) to gain entrance to the palace only to find out that the temporary contextile exhibit is being shown and it's an extra cover charge. So come here to imagine how grand the palace and the garden used to be and check out the statues along the exterior of the palace for free.

If you visit cultural centre, you can not visit the gardens. It's very beautiful and romantic to take places with your beloved one.

This is a conference centre, but the gardens are open to the public. A nice array of grass, water features, trees to shelter under.

Very quiet on a weekday. Very nice terraced gardens at the back of a cute baroque palace now serving as a cultural center. There's also a big elegant contemporary building housing a theater and a bar.

We went to see the Cultural Centre Vila Flor, in which was an exhibition by young international artists. The centre itself is a lovely gallery space and the adjoining gardens are quiet and peaceful. The centre is about a ten minute walk from the historic city centre in the direction of the railway station.

I happened to notice this place only by chance, as I was walking down from the railway station to the historic centre of Guimarães.

It was very early in the morning, so the place hadn't yet opened. I peered through the iron bars of the fence and thought it might be a pretty place to explore later, on my way back to the train station.

However, when I returned, they were just closing for lunch, so I didn't get to see the interior of the palace itself.

The 'gardens' were still open though - they don't close for lunch - so I decided to take a stroll through them.

I can't say that I was impressed at all.

Vegetation sparse, colours uninspiring, and ponds covered with layers of algae.

The grounds obviously hadn't been tended to for quite a while, as there were large chunks missing from the green pathways - couldn't figure out if the pathways were actually lawns, moss clusters or just very thick layers of algae. Whatever they were, they were fairly slippery.

Tufts of grass here; no grass at all there. Stone walkways not particularly 'comfortable'.

Leaves on some of the orange trees looked as if they'd been infected with some kind of blight.

Dead leaves all over the place and semi-ripe oranges in the first stages of decay scattered under the trees, but perhaps that's an unfair criticism, given that leaves and oranges are, in fact, biodegradable.

No real sense of 'life' here. No vibrancy, just an overall feeling of sterility.

The exterior of the building was ok, but really not worth the effort of the visit.
