very interesting place, the city is built on top of a high hill. You cannot enter the city, you can move along the street below, some of the buildings of the city wall seem to still be inhabited. Below the entrance is a small tavern with good food, especially good ones from Lukuma

Anavatos is a one-of-a-kind site to visit. What must have taken place here when Greece fought from it's independence from the Ottoman Empire must have been horrendous. The village is located in a spectacular area of the island, high on a mountain with cliffs on most sides. There is/was only one way up to it and when the Ottomen attacked it could only have been terrifying for the inhabitants. I can only envision what must have taken place as the Greeks fought street-by-street to keep the Ottomen out but eventually they were over whelmed and the woman who thought it was better to commit suicide with their children rather than being enslaved jumped off the cliffs!

For those who think Chios is a lovely island to visit, you'll find it so . . . but for those who want to know about Greece's fight for independence from the Ottoman Empire it's a horrible and sad story . . . but in the end the Ottoman were defeated but a very high cost to the people of Chios!

An abandoned village just on a cliff. Recommended to feel the sad history of the island. Climbing through the streets is not so hard. You can spend 30-45 minutes here.

A fantastic fortified village on top of an, as it looks, impregnable mountain peak. Well, finally the turks succeded, which created damage and manslaughter of the village and its inhabitants. Very interesting site to visit. Unfortunately we couldn’t find any guide when we were there, so we had to rely on the guide books. Strongly recommended before or after your visit to Anavatos, is a stop in the neighbour village, Avgonima and the taverna ”Asteri”. The best taverna on the island!

Grim and creepy, it brings back memories of the Chios massacre, the soldiers coming up the valley to trap the villagers and the townspeople throwing themselves off the cliff at the top.
A steep climb up the village street amidst the crumbling ruins, not recommended at dusk!

The village provides a scenic walk into the past with a steep rock path that meanders through tiny stone houses some of which have been renovated.
It is located in a remote area on the side of a mountain and offers both peace and beauty.

There are no inhabitants here except Smaragda! In the summer a few more people come (5-6 maybe). There is a cafe at the entrance to the village. It s nice to walk among the abandoned homes and imagine how it would have been like.

Our guide described Anavatos as the Mystras of the Aegean and boy was it right! The first breathtaking experience you will have will be while approaching this village from Avgonyma by car: all of a sudden you will encounter stone houses built on top of a steep "mountain" as if no human being was involved in their making. Then you will arrive at the foot of the hill and you will have to climb up (be psychologically and bodily prepared). You will walk through an abandoned village with some houses in ruins some still standing and at some point you will reach the summit and you'll feel as if you are about to meet the gods. To call the view spectacular does not even describe it. You will have to experience it. We only wondered that we, an American family (with their two small kids!) and a French couple were the only ones visiting this absolutely magnificent place!

Nothing interesting compared to the time and effort spent. Not an architectural masterpiece, no historical value (at least for me) and natural beauty...Lots of ruined stone houses and nothing more. Do not waste your time and exhaust your car.

Unbelievable architecture in the top of the rocks. Only admired from the foot of the hill, but it is truly fascinating. Go there.
