If you search for beaches in Portugal you will often be advised to go to Algarve, but in there you will be far from Lisbon and other interesting areas in the country. Well, this is located around 100km or 60 miles from the capital with very good roads and quick access. The water may not be as warm as in Algarve, or not as bright, but this place has a charm of it's own. Nice restaurants, nice places to visit nearby (Obidos) and there is a huge resort being built and almost finished, like I've never seen in Portugal... So yes, this is already one of the best destinations and probably it's going to be the best, along with Algarve .

Both a beach with a huge sandy ocean front and a laguna, it offers everything one can want. Deep, wild waters on the ocean side, and calm and quiet pools on the laguna side. The ocean front is well over a mile long, and you feel like it's own private beach, as most people tend to prefer the laguna side. indeed, direct ocean waters are very fierce and somewhat dangerous. only venture in them if you are a dam good swimmer as there is barely no lifeguards.

At the ocean (Atlantic) mouth of the Obidos lagoon, this beach offers all kinds of options, from exciting surfing to very safe paddling for young children. The beach is huge and I can't imagine it would ever be over-crowded. Foz is relatively un-commercialised, but there are plenty cafe etc. facilities.
Directly opposite on the other side of the lagoon, is the equally fine beach at Aldeia dos Pescadores. Although separated by only a narrow stretch of water, these two beaches would be more than half an hour apart by road.
Our recent visits to both these beaches were further enhanced by the hot, sunny weather which continued throughout our fortnight's holiday.

Beautiful sand beach with consistent European blue flag status. Great for families - although on the Atlantic so water is cold. Still a local feel - with no mass tourism, except for summer when locals take holidays.
This is not the Algarve - so don't expect daily sunshine - but with local trips such as Obidos, 45 mins from Lisbon, windsurfing, surfing, cycling etc. there is a lot to do for everyone.
Nice local restaurants and cafes all year round. Plus Portugal must be one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe - so good budget break for anyone self catering.

Very safe, sort of the unknown Sao Martino - good place for kids and adults alike, quiet, hotels and caravan camping nearby

The large lagoon makes this a distinctive beach destination, ideal for young children and water sport. Not at all crowded by my standards

We visited the Foz de Arelho beach a couple of times during a stay near Caldas Da Reinha. There are two sides to the beach- the lagoon which is placid with wide stretches of sand but heavily populated and fronted in parts by rows parked campervans. You may walk on the beach or , a little inland there is a paved walkway with duckboarded sections that links to a longer trail beside the upper reachesof the lagoon. On the outside of the sandbar that all but closes the lagoon is the ocean beach, less used and with challenging surf waves rollong in. Many restaurants line the beachfront road so you wont go hungry or thirsty.

Hallo, could somebody say something to visit foz de Arelho in early October? Are the restaurants open and may the sailing school? Or is it already out of season and 'dead' in town? Thank you for a tip! Bye, Peter

Yes we definitely saw dogs on the beach. This was October time. Not sure if they have any summer time restrictions though.

Hi, I read in one of the reviews that a big resort is going to be built here. Does anyone know about this? I am thinking to move to this area long term and would like to know about this first!

They are in the process of building a large golf resort. it is on the other side of the lagoon from Foz. i actually do not think it will make much difference.
In Foz they are building but there are loads of villas which are barely used
