About
Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour. A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait. Due to an ongoing reservicing project in the house, some rooms or areas may be closed. Opening and tour arrangements may vary.

- HistoryWW1Wales, United Kingdom25 contributionsWonderful visitWe love visiting Plas Newydd and this time we had our daughter and our little granddaughter (21 months old) with us. We paid for the Easter trail and it was absolutely perfect for her. Not only did she love having a pencil and colouring to do, she also loved the instruments, the bees and the bunnies on the trail. We had a really lovely day and I would definitely recommend a visit.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 2, 2023
- Walruswhiskers22 contributionsNice place for a few hoursA nice way to spend a couple of hours. Visited on a sunny day in April. We did arrive earlier than opening time which is a little later than we expected it to open (opens at 10.30). Only the cafe was open from 10 so we had to wait around for a little bit. The grounds are nice to walk along and you get to see the lovely menai strait by the house. It was especially beautiful on the sunny day, water sparkling. Dogs are allowed in the grounds but not the house or terraced garden. The toilets were nice and clean. We only spent about 1.5hrs here and couldn't have stretched it out much longer. We are NT members but if we were paying full price I think I'd feel it was a bit expensive for how long we were happy to stay.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 7, 2023

- Jackie GAndover, United Kingdom327 contributionsYou can easily spend all day here.We walked to the Rhododenron garden first which was further than we expected but a very pleasant walk through woods close to the Strait. Then we had a wonderful Red Boat ice cream and explored the house. Very interesting Whistler mural and the guide was very informative. There is so much more to this painting than meets the eye! Then we went off to explore the rest of the expansive gardens, several tree houses to find and sit in and admire the view from a different perspective. Sadly, the red squirrels proved elusive but we had a fabulous day.Visited May 2023Written May 22, 2023
- Roy VLeatherhead, United Kingdom625 contributionsLovely grounds and views - and a great shuttle bus.We very much appreciated the shulle bus service and the commentary from the driver. It is such a pity that the house contents were sold off in 1904 by the shameless 5th marquis to repay his debts, leaving the interior of the house lacking appeal. Well worth a visit to admire the location.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 28, 2023

The grounds are beautiful and there is a great play area for children. The cafe serves amazing chocolate brownies and the shop was lovely. What an utter waste of time. We were met outside reception and introduced to the property, we then paid at reception with further discussions on the property. It wasn’t until we got to the house after having paid that we were eventually told only the ground floor of the house was open. Although it was less than half of the ground floor and some of those rooms were closed as private. The rooms were very badly and sparsely furnished apart from one which was heavily cluttered. We later found out why it was left that way but would have been nice to have known at the time. There was no history of the building explained at all just repeat mention of an artist.
We explained the above issues at reception and were told “yes everybody is saying the same thing, we are getting a lot of complaints”
Interesting as we paid a lot of money for nothing then saw lots of people sneaking round the back rather than paying for entry.
All in all not an enjoyable experience for the money.

What has happened here? We came a few years ago and it was lovely, and I know that we have had Covid and there is some work going on, but it was so disappointing. Last time we had a guide explaining the Whistler painting and she was absolutely fascinating, this time a piece of paper. The first exhibition rooms were a bit crowded making it hard to look at the exhibits (and a bit close in the current times) and the rest was like an art gallery - but what on earth was the black and white modern bar for?? Where was the furniture?
Luckily, we did the squirrel tour before going into the house, and I give that 5 stars. The guide was excellent, so interesting, and we saw lots of squirrels. If we had done the house first and missed the squirrel tour, the day would have been wasted! Gardens were lovely and the staff were great.
I got the feeling that someone with high ideas but no real idea what the public want has been let loose to modernise the exhibition, and it just hasn't worked. Glad we saw it when it was lovely, sorry that having wowed it up to our friends, we were all left wondering why!

The guides available in the shop were in Welsh only, could you please ensure that there is a good supply for the summer season which has just started. This is such an interesting house due to the fascinating story of the Paget family , but there is no leaflet telling visitors about the outlandish 5th Marquess of Anglesey. I am glad to see a leaflet about Rex Whistler. The mural is fantastic, as well as the views of Paris with 2 Eiffel Towers. On the day, we visited only downstairs rooms were open to the public. We were told when asked that there was not much to see upstairs. However, you could click on a screen and get a screenshot of the rooms, but clearly not the same as walking through history. I do hope that it is not the Trust new idea to close more and more rooms and you get a film or use a screen to view the House. We are members and have been for many years, but anybody paying full entrance fees hopes to fully enjoy their visit and not see half a house.

Went on a very wet day when visiting was restricted because of the Covid pandemic, however it was well worth going.
We started with coffee in the cafe by the entrance as this was the only one open. Thankfully we erecearly so managed to get seats inside which are severely constrained by Covid. The coffee was good.
The staff were friendly and helpful, the first task after booking us in was to point out the red squirrel on the feeder just outside.
We walked round the gardens, arboretum etc which were very nice, even in the pouring rain. We could only just make out the Menai bridge in the gloom and mist and there was no sign of the views of Snowdonia.
The highlights were the red squirrel and huge stunning trees.
The house was closed because of Covid.

We’ve experienced disruption to normal service at National Trust properties before when we encountered a disastrous use of newly renovated Lindisfarne Castle to display “art” that consisted of old blankets strewn about the place a few years ago.
Plas Newydd is currently in the process of recovery from major plumbing and rewiring works that were put on hold during the pandemic and as such is possibly not delivering the full beans currently. You can still see the quite astonishing 17m long mural by Rex Whistler for which the property (and the artist) are famous, but the rest of the current offering including several rarely seen “unfinished” works by Whistler are a bit underwhelming. The exhibition of Battle of Waterloo militaria is of passing interest (Lord Anglesey, whose house this was, was there in command of the cavalry, apparently) but the rest of what you currently see of the house (large mural aside) is a bit, well, dull.
To give NT their due, the Whistler exhibition is far more accessible than the bizarre blanket-based installation they ruined Lindisfarne Castle with but we were still left feeling relieved that we hadn’t traveled specifically to come here and paid full entrance fee.
The grounds are beautifully manicured and the views across the Menai Strait to the mountains of Snowdonia are stunning, but the place as a whole feels a bit undercooked at present. You can play frisbee golf here and, if you’re lucky, see red squirrels (we didn’t) and if you’re an NT member and in the area that may be enough incentive to come. If you’re paying at the door then I think I’d wait until the rewiring has been finished before splashing the cash.

A crucial improvement is to make the one way system go the other way! For some bizarre reason ( and we did check with the lovely helpful volunteers, that there is no practical reason why the 'brain' in charge chose to go this way,) you are led backwards throughout the exhibitions, so nothing makes any sense. This is ludicrous, and despite a pleasant trip, I felt frustrated and confused throughout, until you had a miniscule eureka moment after leaving an exhibit when you finally found out what it was. The person in charge needs their head examined!
If you go the proper way around, you would enter into an airy vestibule hall where you could have an introduction, or even possibly an introduction signpost, as nothing tells you about the age of the building or its history or is owners at all. What a waste and very poor of National Trust. You could turn use the toilets at the end of your visit, not walk in next to them!
You would also understand the whole Trafalgar exhibition and who Angelsey is. I heard so many comments
Everyone kept saying it was due to Covid, but it's simply a piece of information needed, and the one way route following the logical path needed to learn about the Marquis of Anglesey. We appreciate the difficulties in Covid time, but this really is just a mad choice by the person in charge and nothing that cannot be rectified easily. Even the information sheet with a map of the walks etc carries no history of the house, not even a paragraph. Really, it's so basic for National Trust. People visit in order to learn.
The Whistler painting was astonishing, and well worth the visit. Again, there is so much more information from one volunteer's experience in an internet blog, which goes into so much more detail, but at least the is a leaflet that goes part way to explaining this wonderful fantasy landscape.
I did enjoy the visit, but the difference actually knowing what you are seeing is critical. Please sack the member of staff who thinks going backwards is a bit of fun, and employ someone who has an ounce of brain and what's needed for people to enjoy a historical house.

graded 'average' due to the house being renovated but 'very good' for scenery and grounds. Best visited during good weather as views across the Menai Strait to mountains are spectacular. There is quite a long way to walk from entrance and cafe to the house and not all level. For people who are able to walk well there are plenty of woodland paths, a small colourful terrace area, large grassed areas and adventure playground for children. The buggy service did not appear to be available and having the cafe back at the entrance is a big drawback.
House is only open 11-3.30 but at present there is very little to see anyway. The Waterloo display is interesting and informative and Whistler mural outstanding but otherwise there are few rooms to see (no information anywhere and no guides around to ask). Main staircase was closed off and access was up a steep stone spiral staircase, again not good for less able people. The large room by the front door had an "art installation" which was frankly weird - lots of hanging white paper shirts and no information about it.
The cafe was disappointing with pre-packed sandwiches and very limited food choices.
The National Trust has not put any information about house renovation or limited access on the website. I feel that during renovation the entrance fee should be reduced.

I entered the visitor centre and had my membership cards scanned, I was asked if I had visited before. I had.
My wife & I walked down to the main building and whilst walking down the path we saw some lovely red squirrels running about high up in the trees, lovely.
When we arrived at the main entrance we were greeted by a very pleasant guide who asked us a couple of questions and then proceeded to add to what we already knew, very interesting.
After visiting the house we went for a walk around the grounds.
A lovely day out.

Scenic location overlooking the Menai Strait with plenty of walking options through the grounds. The house was interesting enough, especially the Rex Whistler exhibition, but the ongoing maintenance work is currently impacting on the full experience. There is the usual NT gift shop offering and a sizeable cafe, although the combination of rain and a substantial coach party meant this was crammed and a large queue so we headed off elsewhere in search of a coffee. Well worth a visit but try and catch it on a dry day (and dodge the coach parties if you can).

once again national trust member after 10 years.
plas newydd used to be a very nice place, there are a few change now.
1) car park, as always arrive early as it get full.
2) entrance, has changed a few times, now to the right of the cafe.
3) the cafe, gets quite busy.
4) there are buggies to help you down to the house if you need it.
5) the gardens, to the right of the house facing the water are as nice as every.
the rhododendron walk has numbers 1-8 to guide you there .
there are lots of downed trees blocking the way, the path is not the best in places.
6) the house , oh dear, its very empty now .
10 years ago there was lots of furniture , freedom to roam around, massive rex whistler section.
now there are just walls with paintings on, a few chairs , a few rooms to look in behind a rope with some possessions.
you are now directed to go round the house stating at one door and exiting at the other , to fill the rooms there is lots of what looks like washing hanging from the ceiling,
the cafe downstairs has gone replaced with an ice cream stand.
not sure whats happened , the place is not the same as it used to be

Hi there, yes you're more than welcome to bring picnics into the gardens and grounds at Plas Newydd. We have a few picnic benches located up near to the Old Dairy Cafe and plenty of open space on the grass too. All we ask is that you pop any rubbish in the bins afterwards :)

How long would a visit take to Newydd as doing Sea Zoo on the same day and also Llanfair station?
lyntryfan
Bangor, UK15 contributions
You can spend all day in Plas Newydd if you do all the walks around the grounds as well as the house. There is also a nice café there. But half a day is enough to do the house and the main walks if you're in a rush. The Sea Zoo is close by. The station is also close, but not that much to see there, unless you want to visit Pringle to do some shopping.
Is this place pet friendly ?
Yes, dogs are more than welcome in the grounds on short leads. Everywhere except children's play areas, the house and terraced garden.

Hi, For confirmation I have just been on their website and it states:
1. Designated mobility parking in main car park. Drop-off point
2. Buggy shuttle service for visitors with reduced mobility (subject to availability)
3. Adapted toilet in the Old Dairy near car park
4. Building - steps to entrance, ramp available. Ground floor accessible to manual wheelchairs.
5.Three wheelchairs, booking essential
Some parts of the extensive grounds are level especially alongside the Menai Straits but other parts are on a slope and it is uphill back to the car park and a fair walk - hence the buggy shuttle service. The Whistler Dining Room mural is on the ground floor so is accessible. I would not think they would allow motorised wheelchairs due to space restrictions and the damage they could cause.
If you have any doubts about going why not give them a ring on 01248 714795 or email them ( I am not allowed to give web-links in this answer) - I am sure they will be only to happy to help answer any queries.

I have been on holiday hence the delay in replying. I am not a wheelchair user therefore I do not know the answer to your query. On checking the National Trust Handbook I see relevant symbols opposite "Access for all". I would advise phoning the contact number given: 01248 715272 to ask specific questions. There is a steep decline with steps down to the house and an almost impossible ascent! One can book transport down and up. A small donation is voluntary. The house is in a beautiful setting by the Menai Straits.
