I wandered in here with friends of the owner, and was blown away by the cantina and the shop, but then they lured me into the cheese cantina. I'd never tasted Bitto before, and after walking me through the new, 5-year and 10-year, I couldn't decide. I "settled" for the 5-year and bought some to bring home. It's amazing, and rivals the Parmesan and Grana I also enjoy!

When out of Chiavenna on a day trip to Sondrio our friends there told us to stop on the way in Morbegno to have a look - and for some shopping - at the traditional food store 'Fratelli Ciapponi'. We were surprised to find in this rather untouristy place one of the most incredible food shops we have ever seen.
In several rooms and cellars there are to be found all kind of local products like cheese, salume, wines and various other products. Alone the atmosphere in this place is unique. On an article by Financial Times displayed at a front window, it says that it is one of the best 50 food stores in the world, As an old globetrotter, having seen many places all over the world, I must agree.

This place is a feast for the senses. You can find all sorts of local specialities. Candies, cookies, chocolate, nuts, honey, all sorts of marinated vegetables/fruits, and liquors. Wine selection is impressive and spread over three floors. Cheeses and meats galore. They have salami made from almost every kind of meat: pork, horse, donkey, goat, etc. Of course they have the local bitto cheese from a young 10-month to 10-year aged. The guy working there was very nice and spoke English.

This place is incredible! You have to go deep down into the cellars to see the old wines and cheeses! The vanilla cookies were the best i ever had. The 10 year old Bitto cheese is to die for! Really a fun culinary experience!

If you ever happen to come to Morbegno the Ciapponi is a must to see. The selection of local cheese - especially the Bitto is unique - unluckily also quite expensive.

I'm very sorry to have to give this beautiful local shop a negative review but I cannot tolerate what happened to me on my first (and LAST!) visit this morning.
The shop is very nice and quality is certainly very high but 32euro for 0,425kg of Bitto Giovane is way too expensive (that means 75 euro/kg). So expensive that it makes me wonder if it's only very expensive or if he actually screwed me....
A mai più rivederci Mr. Ciapponi!

The store is really extraordinary with different caves for the wines, champagnes and cheeses.
The owner only speaks italian, but offers you to taste some cheese in one of the caves.
Apart from cheese and wine, you can buy different styles of selfmade pasta, polenta, dolcis, marmelades, etc in the store.
So in any case worth visiting :)

non sono cari, sono giusti, ovviamente poi se uno sceglie un particolare bitto di un particolare anno il prezzo lo sa.
