Casale Monferrato is a large enough town to have both train and bus connections to Solonghello. It is located on the plain between the extreme eastern slopes of the hills of the Po and the right bank of the river, and is easy to reach from Milan. It has wisely kept the perimeter that was established by the town's ancient fortified walls.

In addition it has a tourist outreach regarding the local wines offering tastings interestingly housed inside the castle in the middle of town. We at Casa Serena in Solonghello (20 mins away) come to Casale for our favorite pizzeria. The large public market is held beside the castle on both Tuesday and Friday mornings. It is a cross between a flea market and local farmer's market -- an interesting event!

We were in the village for the Wine Festival and it was open. We walked the ramparts and enjoyed the views.

The Enoteca on the ground level is a good place to sample the regional wines.

I happened to be in Casale Monferrato on a Tuesday morning, market day. After visiting the quaint historical centre we found ourselves in the huge market square (interesting in itself with its mix of agicultural and urban wares for sale). The castle looked interesting in spite of, alas, the dreadfully dirty moat surrounding it. We expected to have to pay to enter but it was free. The interiors of two towers have been refurbished beautifully and are worth visiting from the conservation point of view. These rooms are also used for temporary exhibitions. A kind lady who has an office in the courtyard told us how to get onto the castle walls: a worthwhile climb because on a clear day one can have a good view of the town and surrounding countryside.

We profit from the possibility to visit for free some Italian castle to go there. You indeed can do it each first WE of the month... It's on the main place of the city. It has got a free carpark close to and it permits you to go after in the little streets of the city by feet. There are some ice-cream places and bars that are very useful after the visit in a sunny day.... I would just have appreciated to have a tourist guide with me to tell me some more about the details present on the big panels on the wall... But it's however a super visit to do. Go upstairs shows you a splendid view

Nice castle, seems to be will maintained. However it was closed because of construction during my visit and I couldn't visit as much as I wished.
