The temporary exhibition rooms are closed, but the national collection remains open.
The national collection consists of quite a few rooms of almost exclusively religious art. It’s very good, if that’s your thing.

Compared to the importance of the artistic production of Ferrara during the renaissance, only few movable works of art of the highest importance are left in Ferrara. The museum in the Palazzo dei Diamanti is just a mirror of this unfortunate history. So, first of all enjoy the street Ercole D'Este. It is not spoiled by shops and it gives an impression of how a residential street for nobility and the high bourgeoisie could have felt like. This is a rare feeling.
Second, the architecture of the building is unique and interesting. The inside relatively well restored.
Third: The art collection is worth visiting. Don't overlook the 5 small El Greco paintings. They are just marvelous. Spend most of your time too enjoy the small Cosme Tura panels (hélas on two! of the great master of Renaissance Ferrara) and to discover the well represented work by Garofalo.
I was also toutched by the passion painted by Vicino de Ferrara and the works by Ortolano.
Unfortunately Dosso Dossi is also not realy represented,
The lighting and presentation of the works is below level.

it gets its name from the small pyramids on the outer walls...or even from being the house where only precious people live! the members of the ruling family are the diamonds of the Society in the 15th to the 19th centuries. Its inner Gallery of art is worth a visit because of the paintings by Ercole De Roberti and Cosmè Tura, Gentile da Fabriano and Andrea Mantegna! Renaissance is well represented here!

A masterpiece of renaissance architecture, it houses the Ferrara Art museum. As this is Italy, there's Madonnas, Jesuses and Saints galore. And frescoes. It's still worthwhile to visit though...

The palazzo itself is worth seeing as the walls are covered in thousands of white marble diamond shaped blocks. The building hosts the National Art Gallery of Ferrara and has a range of paintings from the medieval period up until about the 18th century (naturally the renaissance period is well represented). Although I am more a fan of modern art, the price of admission was only 2 Euros (over 65s get in for free), so it is well worth a visit. In addition, there is a space downstairs which hosts modern/contemporary art exhibitions, the next big one being Matisse in February 2014. It's only about a ten minute walk from Castello Estense, so you've really no excuse not to go! Definitely a highlight of any trip to Ferrara. Like a lot of galleries/museums in Italy, I think it is closed on Mondays.

We did a guided round trip through Ferrara and this building was just impressive.
With the sun behind, one can imagine a diamond. Lovely.

We visited the special exhibition of Giuseppe de Nittis that deals with fashion around the turn of the 19th/20th Century and beautifully marries his paintings of the upper class of the time with actual physical fashion items from the same time period. We went on a Tuesday morning and had no problem getting in right away but it was already surprisingly busy with individual patrons and two school classes so it is advisable to buy tickets online for weekends or Holidays to avoid the queue. As great as the special exhibition was as much a let down was the Pinacoteca Nazionale. It basically consists entirely of religious paintings and altar pieces. So people who like this kind of thing will delight in the nicely restored specimens on exhibit but anyone else will be bored out of their skulls. No other painting style or time periods but medieval religious ones are being featured. It is the most one sided pinacoteca I have ever seen.

The building itself is worth to see. We wanted to get into the gallery, but at 2 p.m. they closed! Very unfriendly.

Worth the walk from the main square in Ferrara, the Palazzo dei Diamanti is an unusual building with an excellent art gallery. While we were there, there was a first-rate special exhibit of Matisse figure paintings. The exhibit was of unexpectedly good quality for a city and gallery of this size.
