We took the train from Montecatini Terme to Florence. The train was about 20 minutes late and we had some trouble buying tickets at the machines (we don't speak Italian very well) but another commuter helped us out. The train was very quiet and a smooth ride.

There are two stations in Montecatini Terme within a mile of each other, both on the same line from Florence to Viareggio. The trains are quite good and not too expensive (compared to UK). Tickets can be purchased from machines using card payment in English (or several other languages). Not much in the way of facilities at the station. The announcements and signage are in English as well as Italian. Remember to validate your ticket in the machine before boarding the train.

The train goes only in two directions. Towards Pizza, and Florence Makes small stops in-between. No operator at station to help you, just a ticket machine, but no worry. Listen to me. Across the street from station up the block about 50 yards there is a tobacco shop that will sell you all the train tickets you want and answer all your questions. On the left hand side.

Nice train trip! Takes you right to Florence but be prepared to know your station on the way back. We took the last train back from Florence, pitch black at 11pm the train stopped at what we thought might be our station, but since the doors didn't open and there as no announcement, we thought it was just slowing down. Turns out, since we didn't push the buttons on the door, the train just kept going. We got stranded at the next town with no taxis or Uber.
What we wish someone would've told us?--push the train door buttons!

The Centro station is not more than a 1/4 mile or so from Terme. Why there are two stations so close to each other is a mystery to me. In any case, the terminals are easy to get to and buying a ticket is fairly easy. One time there was actually someone working the ticket booth, but in most cases you'll need to buy a ticket from a machine. Unless you are fluent in Italian, be sure to choose the British flag icon at the bottom of the screen before starting to purchase your ticket. The process is rather slow and you have to purchase a one way ticket to your destination before it asks if you want a round trip. You can then choose to enter cash or credit card for payment. If using a credit card, you must have a PIN to complete the transaction. Once you've printed the tickets, again a slow process, retrieve them from the bin at the bottom of the machine. Then, don't forget to validate the ticket at any of the validation machines either inside terminal or on the platform. Check the scheduled departure time to your destination to be sure you get on the right train. There is only one track and it handles trains going in both directions. One direction terminates in Firenza, the other in Viareggio. If you are unsure, just ask a local if you're on the correct train, BEFORE it leaves! Enjoy the cheapest and easiest way to travel from Montecatini! PS: When it is busy, be sure to get to the station in plenty of time to buy a ticket. Final warning, the machines are very slow.

The trains are efficient and convenient. Be sure to get your ticket stamped at the little green machine After you buy it. We missed our return stop to Montecatini Terme after visiting Lucca one evening. There is no announcement of stops from Lucca until the end of the line, Florence. It would be wise to pick up a flyer schedule at the station when you purchase your ticket and count the number of stops when you board for your destination. Stops are quick and stations are not well lit. All in all it was fun to get lost and backtrack from Florence to Montecatini Terme.

Decided to take the train rather than drive the trip was comfortable it was only about 55 minutes didn't have to hassle parking in Florence and one way on the train was only 5 1/2 euro so I'm pretty sure this was far less cost than parking in Florence. Certainly less hassle.

I didn’t know that the ticket office is only open on a Monday and Thursday (Monday most of the attractions close) and tickets can either be obtained at the stations ticket machine assuming you have the patience of a saint or the Tabac, I never did find out which Tabac sold tickets! The trains are timely and had plenty of seats. Be prepared to have your ticket checked whilst on the train so make sure you validate your ticket prior to travelling. Another good game is watching those that haven’t bought a valid ticket to travel avoiding the ticket inspector in these double decker trains. Be aware that from 1300 to 1600 most places close.

No one there to help you. You buy train tickets from machine, or go to Tobacco shop (block away) and buy from them. Train only goes two places. To left, you go to Florence and large train station where you can buy tickets to anywhere. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Florence by train.

On our recent stay in Montecatini Terme we took the train to Lucca, Pisa, and Florence. The station is in the center of town with easy to use ticket machines and frequent trains to all areas around Tuscany and beyond. The trains are clean and comfortable. A nice and worry free way to tour Italy.
