    A Must do!
If you’re staying in Montecatini, this is a must do activity. 7€ per person for return ticket. Runs every half an hour. Train itself goes at a slow rate upwards the mountain , great fun! Journey about 7 mins one way ( going down ) weather was great when we went so we got to see some gorgeous views. I recommend you stand at the front or the back as you’ll be seeing the most of the views ! It is also possible to walk up and down if you don’t want to pay return , although the path isn’t consistent there is a path for people to get up or down 👍🏻 when you get up there , there is only 2/3 high priced restaurants. Was very empty when we went. The little “town “ on the mountain is basically like a ghost town, a lot of deserted hotels and cafes , and buildings in general. Scattered glass and smashed. It’s a pitty as location is beautiful. That didn’t spoil the adventure! I don’t know how safe it is up there in the abandoned areas very late at night so I’d advice going morning / afternoon and evening but not too late or else it will be hard to see how to get down ( if you’re walking ). Recommend!!!

Back to the past and up (and down) the hill (panoramic view included)
I was attracted by the fact that this funicular was built at the end of 19th century and it was worth the visit. Climbing the steep hill with the last rays of the golden summer sun was amazing and the small village of Montecatini in Alto is so nice and a must-go place (also quite cool even in a summer evening). Frequent rides, back to the past. To do!

    Afternoon visit to Montecatini Alto.
Very punctual time table. Felt very safe in the very old carriage. Excellent views on the journey and at the top. Montecatini Alto has enough bsrs/restaurants and cafes to satisfy most people's needs. A few hours is all you need, although it must be magical if staying overnight. A must do and so easy to do, all for €7 return, July 2023.

Worthwhile side trip from Montecatini Terme.
Wonderful video-worthy views. We got 'stuck' up in the village over lunch, but it was no hardship as we had a fabulous lunch (and not overpriced) at one of the restaurants on the main square. We were able to park for free. It was just a couple of minutes' walk through a leafy neighbourhood to the entrance to the funicular.

A fun way to get to the top
A bit creaky and questionable but it works and gets you to the top- or the bottom if you prefer. Small and can be crowded but an impressive feat of engineering especially on the 38.5% grade. Do be aware that it closes midday before reopening so plan accordingly.

    GO GO GO STUNNING
I can not recommend this enough, Montecantini its self is a very small quiet town with not much going on. We got the cart up every night for dinner its simply beautify and so worth the money. Has about 8 stunning restaurants some with views over the town, food is stunning and very fairly priced. cost $7.00 adult return and they run about every 20 mins. It has lovely walks too IT IS A MUST.

    A Fun and Memorable outing
It was a good experience and they staff spoke English which was great. We visited Montecatini for the day. We travelled on the train from Massa. It costs €7.50 for a return trip on the Funicular. You can either sit inside the cable car or stand for the journey on either the front or back of cable car. The staff were friendly and even took a family pic for us. A worthwhile experience.

    Historic funicular with fantastic views
This remarkable piece of history dates back to the 1890s but still provides a wonderful service for residents and tourists alike. The service is scheduled to run half hourly with a break at midday. Seating is on bench seats for 8 people in 4 compartments as well as standing room at the front and back. The staff are helpful, friendly and take great care over safety. One carriage ascends as another descends on a single track except for a passing place in the middle. It is a great experience enjoyed by all three generations of our family as we made the trip, enjoyed the circular walk at the top and a wonderful lunch in the small town square; a memorable 4 hour trip together.

    Excellent experience
Staying close by, we almost stumbled upon this funicular. Not very well advertised but such a treat. Great views and a beautiful little hill town on arrival with extensive views across the valley. Remember to visit the Thermal Spa in the town after the funicular. You won’t be disappointed.

    Great fun
Staying in Montecatini terme we used this twice once in the daytime and once at night . A very pretty main square with lovely restaurants . Beautiful views in the daytime and spectacular at sunset . The funicular itself was great fun especially standing outside at the front if you get the chance .

The funicular is quite inexpensive compared to others in Italy that we have used on this trip. The ride up was about 10 minutes and starts quite easy and then the gradient steepens. They ran reasonably well to time and all the staff were quite friendly. Once at the top you could spend 15 minutes or hours - depending on what you are after. Photos, wandering, eating.

Very nice ride to the top (and down). The coach is very old so it is a very authentic ride up and down. Like going back in time. Very recommended to go for an evening to the top and have dinner in one of the nice restaurants on the top.
Rides every half hour until midnight.

About a 20 minute walk from train station to the base of the mountain/Funicolare Station. Tickets were about 7 euros/person. Ride up offers fantastic views. Small town on top, with quaint restaurants/bars. We had a sunny day, great weather, and delicious food in centro. Pretty church and grounds to walk about. Several gift shops. We were here during the day, as we were leaving around 5-6pm, many tourists were arriving. I imagine, early evening/sunset must be beautiful from the overlook! Next time, i would plan to go at that time.

Perfect ride for a whole family - it’s a well preserved XIX century trolley going from Montecatini Terme to Montecatini Alto. It’s safe , views are astounding and the crew is super pleasant and helpful. A must visit if you are in the area with your family.

Amazing views & with a short walk to several restaurants & shops. However, we found the shops were mostly closed in the evening hour. We were there for dinner. The only thing, if your not a smoker, ( which none of us are) the tables are close together & Europeans think nothing of smoking at the tables!!
