- CopaCetic71Toronto, Canada8 contributionsOrvieto's Caves are Well Worth the VisigtWe decided to see the caves at the last minute, and we are so glad we did. All visitors must go in with a group and a guide, and we were very lucky to have an excellent guide, Cristiana. She is passionate about sharing Orvieto's remarkable history, and we learned so much in the hour of the tour. The tour was well-paced, and everyone seemed to be able to keep up easily. The stairs in and out of the cave require a bit of dexterity as the passages are very small. We were only told this after buying the tickets, so if you have trouble waking or bending, please ask before you buy.Visited May 2023Written May 5, 2023
- VickiSalerno, Italy16 contributionsGreat way to get overview of old Orvieto.Excellent tour which gave insight into the immensity of the whole area. It’s not logical to think you may see large areas, and we were lucky to see the sample we did. Guide and office staff were great. Only suggestion- Warn people re steps before they start.Visited May 2023Written May 15, 2023
- Shmulik TBet Lehem HaGelilit, Israel18 contributionsNice tour but overratedThe tour is well arranged and the guide was great, the site is well maintained - very good points, it is also refreshing etc. However, it is simply the basements of people from the middle age who dug into the soft ground because they needed more working area. It has small importance in my eyes. but if you are at beautiful Orvieto do it as add-on.Visited August 2023Written August 3, 2023

Our guide took us through the cave to show us the historic significance of the caves to ancient life in Orvieto. The pigeon raising tradition originated in the caves. I highly recommend this tour.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 23, 2023
- Explorer2 contributionsA must see in OrvietoTruly enjoyed the Orvieto underground tour. Our tour guide Kristina was enthusiastic and brilliant at explaining the history of the place. The view from the entrance was also stunning. A must to visit in Orvieto.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 13, 2023
- L M5 contributionsWorthwhileOur tour guide was well informed about the underground and shared important details in a well paced tour. Our group however was a bit large so you didn’t always hear what she had to say. Warning also for those who don’t handle stairs easily, there is a fair amount of walking and climbing. Great introduction though to the caves of Orvieto and Etruscan/ Roman life.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 5, 2023
- WCOttavWalnut Creek, California159 contributionsHistory buffs will love this tour!We took the 3:15 tour in English - tickets are purchased at the Tourist Info office, across the street from the Duomo. (Not the office for tickets to the Duomo, the one next door). From your gathering spot outside the ticket office, the tour guide will lead you to the locked entrance. The views to the south are beautiful. You can take photos once underground, but no videos. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed learning more about the Etruscans and RomansVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten January 10, 2024

Our family just didn’t enjoy it for a number of reasons. First, it really isn’t all that interesting. You visit just a couple caves filled with pigeon holes. There’s not too much more than that. 2nd, our tour guide didn’t make it that interesting. Finally, the groups are large and our group contained loud kids. The pace of the tour was very slow and the kids made it hard to hear the guide at times.

It take about an hour for the tour. It was interesting to learn about how Orvieto was situated and how people over the years have created and use the caves / cellars.
We were there in September and lots of mosquitos. It can also get a bit chilly inside the caves.

Orvieto is perched on a sheer-sided volcanic tufa plug. It dates back to the Etruscan era. Entering via the escallators from the car park far below, one passes through underground rooms and streets built by the Etruscans and then modified by the Romans etc. Having a guide to expain it all, is very worthwhile. The whole ancient city is very pictuaresque and a lot of fun to explore and to stay in. Thoroughly recommended.

This was my second time to Orvieto but first to see the Orvieto Underground. The caves are extraordinary, and essentially honeycomb beneath the entire town. The Orvieto Underground tour is a thorough description of the caves and the engineering work necessary to create this intricate design, which I believe started around 500 BC, which is fascinating. Very reasonably priced. There are a few stairwells underground that are narrow and steep, so be aware, in case that is an issue. Also, the views into the countryside for the first five minutes (and last five) as you enter and exit the caves are stunning! Stay towards the rear of the group, so you can stop and take photos as you wish.

This is an excellent adventure back in time to both Etruscan and medieval Orvieto. The caves are hewn from volcanic rock by the ancient residents for security, working spaces, and even for housing pigeons as a food source during a Roman siege. Our tour guide was interesting and provided plenty of information to enliven the tour.
Be aware that some of the pathways are narrow and steep and only physically capable persons should undertake this tour.

Our one hour tour was very informative. Well worth the visit. Our time in Orvieto was well worth the effort of getting there. The funicular railway access to the medieval town was a delight. Psst, try the coffee at the railway cafe, sensational. It was the best of any we had while in Italy for 21 days. You will need at least 3-4 hours to absorb the town, its ambience and attractions.
