- cm08 contributionsA lovely trip to Haddon HallReally enjoyed our trip to Haddon Hall, it was informative and interesting and the gardens were lovely and relaxing to walk around. It’s only a short drive from Bakewell so worth a visit. It’s a very quirky, gothic building and there is a lot of information about the history of the building and who came to own it over the years. We went before midday on a Saturday and it wasn’t too busy, just a nice amount of visitors so that you could read the information books without a queue to read them. Many thanks for your feedback on your visit to Haddon. - Ilaria A7 contributionsAbsolute gem!We had a fantastic experience at Haddon Hall. The house retains most of its medieval character and the gardens are magnificent even on a foggy day. I was particularly fascinated by the wall paintings in the private chapel, an absolute gem, that contribute to making Haddon Hall the special place it is. Furthermore, visitor assistants gave free short talks which I found very interesting. Special thanks to Jon Cook for explaining all about the wall paintings and Haddon Hall in general, it’s always great to meet people who are that passionate. Many thanks for your feedback - it's great to hear you enjoyed your visit to Haddon and that Jon was able to provide you with more information!Written April 24, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 5, 2023
- JHNB1Cambridge, United Kingdom235 contributionsWonderful ancient house and locationWe visited this house just before Easter as a half-way stop on our journey to Southport. The house has a top U.K. listing and its amazing to see what this means. The house is sort of ‘stitched’ together in all areas. Bits sag, have woodworm, are broken are out of alignment etc, but overall the house and gardens are charming and wonderfully kept. The setting is amazing bounding a fast moving stream. At the higher points there are long views over the landscape. We really liked the whole experience. Many thanks for your feedback, we're so pleased you included a visit to Haddon in your journey!Written April 24, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten April 11, 2023
- ty3199Leeds, United Kingdom13 contributionsBeautiful but expensive!Stunning location and the long gallery is a wonderful interior, however for the price there isn't a significant amount to see and at £9 the guidebook is rather expensive. However on the whole a really impressive building with an interesting history and collection. The garden is outstanding but probably better to look at in summer! Many thanks for your review - we appreciate both positive and negative feedback, this will be passed onto the team.Written May 23, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 25, 2023

- Steve25_12Esher, United Kingdom252 contributionsStunning GardensWe visited on our way back south after a week in the Peak District and are extremely glad we did as it was the highlight of our week as we love historic houses. The hall is wonderfully authentic for a medieval hall; the gardens were stunning ; & the volunteers extremely knowledgeable and friendly. We had lunch in the restaurant and it was all fresh ; plentiful; and very tasty. We took advantage of the Gardeners World 2 for 1 offer which made the price acceptable - I don't think we would have stopped if we had to pay full price and the £3.80 parking fee as well (suggest that parking is included in the price) Otherwise a visit is highly recommendedMany thanks for your feedback, we're so pleased you decided to visit!Written August 10, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2023Written June 28, 2023

Known as the 'Sleeping Beauty' having been left under lock and key for two hundred years, when you enter Haddon you step back in time. A visit is not complete until you have visited the lovely gardens then to the tea rom for a 'cuppa'! - Anne Wren17 contributionsPerfect few hours spent hereGrowing up in the area my favourite stately home has always been Haddon. It's smaller and less grand than its close neighbour so much cosier. My daughter and I visited again yesterday after a big gap and it's even nicer! The staff were all just delightful and the description of the history was excellent. We were lucky enough to have a dry sunny day so the gardens were beautiful to walk round. They are much wilder than last time I visited and all the prettier for it. Add that to lovely food in the restaurant and that's the day out topped off beautifully 😊😊Thank you so much for such wonderful feedback, we're so pleased you enjoyed your time at Haddon. - Chris SChesterfield, United Kingdom9 contributionsGreat place with truly caring staff. My wife, who is disabled had a great experience here. As soon as she rolled up in her wheelchair her carer was immediately offered free entrance and my wife a 30% discount on entry as a Derbyshire resident. All the staff she encountered had a wonderful attitude and went out of there way to accommodate her and ensure that she got the most possible out of her visit. The house itself is remarkable and although the website went on at length about it's lack of suitability for wheelchair users the care of the staff ensured that all that could have been done was doneMany thanks for your feedback, it's wonderful to hear that your wife enjoyed her time at Haddon. This will be shared with the team. We travelled nearly 60 miles and sat in a five mile traffic queue hoping to enjoy our visit to Haddon Hall. Being charged £3.50 to park the car to then pay a concessionary rate of £20.50 each to visit was not a good start to the day. The hall itself is very interesting but there’s virtually no information about the place apart from descriptions in small print -too small for my eyes - of a series of old and faded tapestries. Most of the rooms were virtually empty of furniture so there was little to see to help imagine the lives of the people who inhabited the hall. The gardens, which were one of the main reasons for our visit were even more disappointing. The plants were almost all going over and we’ll past their best. There was no sign of seasonal succession planting. Some of the borders were dried up and weed infested. The parterre garden was ragged and even the lawns were threadbare. It really did feel that Lord Manners is doing his best to take our money and offer as little as possible in return. The one saving grace was the tasty, though overpriced food in the restaurant. However, access to the restaurant is via an uneven gravelly slope and a flight of uneven steps. Carrying a tray of food and drink back down the stela and gravelly slope was a feat of balance in itself. We had thought we might take stroll on the estate walks mentioned on the website but as with everything else at Haddon Hall there were no signposts, no offered A4 maps to guide the visitor, just the chance to blow another tenner on a guide book that may or may not have included descriptions of where to go. All in all an extremely disappointing visit. One can only hope the property is handed over to the National Trust who at least know how to make visitors feel valued.

We have had several pleasant visits to Haddon Hall, but visiting their Winter Market was a big mistake. There had been local flooding for days prior to the event, which did not seem to have been taken into consideration at all by the planners. After a long wait to get into the car park we were encouraged to drive along plastic tracks which had been laid in the overflow car park (a muddy field) and then to park on the grass, which was very boggy and on a slight incline. The car park attendants soon realised this wasn't going to work and then began to encourage people to park on the actual tracks as well, so there was no way to then get out. More and more cars were being sent into the field, but with no spaces to park and no way for cars to leave. It was a complete shambles.
Once we made it to the hall we were told our 1 year regular visitor passes would not give us free entry and we would have to pay full price, which was very annoying as we were allowed free entry to the previous Summer Market. In the end we decided to leave and predictably it took a long time to free our car from the gridlocked boggy field it was in. A couple of members of staff in the car park then said they thought it was free entry for people with regular visitor passes! It really seemed like there was no planning or communication going on.
I wrote to Haddon to complain, but they didn't even acknowledge my email, so I don't think we'll be returning.

We had visited the Hall in 2017 when it had a modern kinetic art exhibition throughout the interior and felt like a loved and lived in family home with small but attractive gardens. This time it was much more expensive to visit. We paid a couple of pounds more to visit Chatsworth and spent 7 hours there, Haddon we had seen it all and read all of the grubby typed sheets left in each room in just over an hour. The Hall was like an ancient but empty shell. There was a room guide in the main hall but otherwise the rooms had no human guide in them and little presentation or interpretation apart from the old typed sheets. It felt like contents had been removed since our last visit. When we went in one of the staff mentioned a video in the old kitchens and asked another staff member to put it on but she was too busy. The house was crying out for some floral displays and an imaginative way to tell its story. The guide book was £8.50 which was too expensive after paying almost £50 for the 2 of us to get in. Most of the garden was inaccessible due to building work, the rest was tired and unkempt. The lovely old chapel looked in need of urgent care and cleaning. We understand that historic buildings cost a lot to maintain but if you charge premium prices you should offer some sort of visitor experience especially in the current economic climate. I would suggest that the owners take a walk around the property and see if they think the admission charges are fair.

I am sorry to hear that your recent trip to Haddon did not match your previous experiences. We take all feedback very seriously, your comments have been passed onto the team. The restoration work, while unsightly, was imperative for the longevity of The Long Gallery but that work is now complete and the scaffolding has been removed.

This Tudor building is beautifully restored and entrance includes an interesting 30 minutes guided tour. But the entrance fee of £22 each plus £3.50 car parking made it a very expensive 1.5 hour visit. Other disappointments were it is sparsely furnished and you are only allowed in the gardens, not the acres of estate unless you pay extra for a guided walk at certain times of year. Because of this I won’t be recommending it to friends.
Compare this to National Trust properties, Lyme Park for example, where the price is £9 including parking and you can spend all day in the beautifully furnished house and gardens, the many acres of park with deer, woodland and play park for children.
I’d like to return with friends but not unless they reduce their prices.

We visited today. The Christmas decorations were very good but at £23 each plus £3.50 car park I do not think it was good value for money because:
1) the gardens were closed off due to scaffolding and the lady on the entrance advised us not to go into the grounds that were accessible as it was slippery. This meant that the full charge was being levied for access only to the house!
And 2) the house is brimming with history but it was poorly communicated. No overview of the history of the place or the family. Only 1 folder in each room - which was difficult to read in the low light. No labels on any of the pictures or artefacts at all to help the customer.

We enjoyed our visit to Haddon a very unique building with some very informative stewards giving us the history of this Medieval / Tudor Manor House. Unfortunately the extortionate cost nearly £30 (exceeding Chatsworth House where you can spend a whole day) spoilt the experience as everything can be seen in several hours. A bonus being a super cafe/ restaurant with beautiful food.

Very disappointed with our Christmas visit to Haddon Hall this year: we usually go every year and love the whole atmosphere but it was not at all up to the standard of previous visits. The advertising had said roaring fires and carols but there was only one very pathetic fire which you couldn’t get near because of a a huge fire guard, and a few very quiet carols playing in one room on a stereo. In previous years they had carol singers in the courtyard, pop up cafes (including a marquee one year) and both of these things would have been possible even with the problems due to Covid. The rest of the Hall was freezing cold with no heating at all and the decorations were tacky and cheap and mostly plastic. There were none of the fabulous flower/foliage/door wreath decorations which had been so stunning. Plus the entry price had been hugely increased. The whole visit was a real let-down after previously magical trips. We won’t be bothering again which is a shame as it had been a Christmas tradition with us. I can’t help thinking that Covid is being used as an excuse by many places to put up prices and reduce what they’re offering.

Having visited the Hall on several previous Christmases a comparison is inescapable. The joy of an entertainment was missing, covid being blamed, and yet for this diminished offering the prices had been raised. Although it is a matter of taste, by comparison, this year the decorations were decidedly tacky - the two plastic figures flanking the fireplace in the main hall were just jarringly horrible. The advertising boasted 'roaring fires', the plural was an exaggeration and the fire itself, unimpressive this time. Scaffolding was being erected at the time - just in time to spoil things for the short Christmas opening, why not wait 3 weeks? The building itself of course has some fascinating and exquisite features but the 'Christmas' experience this year did not live up to the hype or justify the price hike.

Visited today with friends and what a great day.The market was contained within a majestic building adding to the great atmosphere. The items on sale where of good quality and varied being appropriately priced. Called into the restaurant for food which offered a good quality menu competively priced.Overall all the staff we interacted with were friendly and accommodating making our day enjoyable. The only negative comment I would make is if you want to visit the hall alone £22 per adult is expensive.

Visited haddon hall today, walking up to it I was amazed and the beauty of it and couldn’t wait to get in as I love historic buildings and finding out things from the past regarding them. I have visited a number of large statley old buildings and have to say I’ve been left a little disappointed as didn’t find it good value for money as it was £23.90 each and there were 3 of us so £71.70 seems a lot! Plus £3.80 car park charge. Once inside it stated there are over 100 rooms but you only get to see a small proportion of these so I only felt I had got half an experience as didn’t see much of the house or the garden! Just feel I would of been happier to pay more and maybe feel like having lunch there if I felt it better value. Having said all that seeing it from outside is worth a look just go with that in mind.

Don't know but I doubt it. One visitor complained about carrying food left over from the restaurant being forbidden.
Is it free to visit the gardens only, or are they included in the entry fee?

Is anyone interested in booking a Graffiti Tour w me and my friends? We need ten and there are only four of us. Of the artisans who built the hall, many added a saying or a snippet of wisdom in the tiny panes of glass ( each one hand fitted)or in the handhewn stone in the 12th to 17th centuries. We discovered some of the sayings two years ago and were fascinated. Sunday we will return May 6, 2018. We are traveling from the US and really hope others will be interested enough so we can book a tour. Otherwise we’ll just have enjoy it and wonder.

No, you will need a ticket for the house if you want to walk in the grounds. However, you can visit the restaurant/cafe without purchasing a ticket for the house.
