    Beautiful Place
As a local, used to annoy me that I had to pay for parking. Despite that decided to go recently and was very surprised / impressed at how much development and conservation work has gone into the very large landscape. Was greeted very warmly by the staff, who really went out thier way to explain the setup. In reality, what a beautiful place, protected by people that care, the parking charge was little to the nice time we had.
Hi J45TApaulw, Thank you for your lovely comments about Arne. We are delighted to read about your visit and how impressed you are with our nature reserve. The team is dedicated to developing and improving the habitats for wildlife and the facilities for visitors. We will pass on your kind words to our welcome team. Best wishes, Laura

    Perfect visit
Found this place while passing through and saw the signs so thought I’d stop by. I’m so glad I did. I returned a few weeks later as I really liked it there. I’ve now joined rspb so I can enjoy many more trips there. I didn’t mind paying the £5 entry charge, I’ve been to more expensive places and enjoyed it less. Both times I did the red route although this time it was a bit shorter because of springwatch filming. I even got a photo of Michaela Strachan who was filming down a gravel track ( this was open to public, it wasn’t in the shut off area). There’s just so much different wildlife to see. I love this place and will keep visiting and recommending friends and family.
Hi Alf00507, Thank you for visiting us and coming back again so soon! We are so pleased you've decided to join us as members and that you saw much of our amazing wildlife during your visits. We can't wait to see you back again soon. Best wishes, Laura

    A great place for nature.
A well kept diverse nature reserve. Well informed people on the desk. Lots to see if you are lucky. Sadly we didn't see the Dartford warbler that we went for but it was a good day. Cafe was good and a welcome tasty break was had there. Can be cold in the wind even on a sunny day.
Hi Y5253ULjaneb, Thank you for your lovely review and for saying Arne is well kept. Glad you enjoyed your visit to the cafe and saw some of our amazing wildlife. You'll have to some back soon for another chance of spotting the Dartford warbler! All the best, Laura

Stunning views, unspoilt nature and a very worthy cause
Beautiful location, stunning views, and most importantly, unspoilt nature which is now very hard to find on the south coast. Staff (mostly volunteers) were all very friendly. Some of the other people complaining here about having to pay an entry fee clearly do not realize the costs involved in maintaining a huge site like this to enable visitors. The RSPB is a charity, they do not make profit! If you're not willing to support it, go somewhere else, simples!

A stunning reserve with so much so see and appreciate in nature
The RSPB do amazing conservation work and Arne is a stunning reserve with diverse habitats. It offers so much for birders, nature lovers, families, and caters for people with disabilities very well, there are trampers that can be hired, Disabled visitors can have a day permit to park further into the reserve and there is a facility for BSL users to learn more about what it available. I love that back packs can be hired for only £3.50 so children can engage with nature with a bug pot, magnifying glass, fact sheets, activity sheets and binoculars. My children would have loved that when they were younger. The coffee and cakes at the cafe are so tempting! I have no problem with the entry fee, conserving nature comes at a cost, but I have been an RSPB member for a few years now and happy to support the RSPB monthly which also gives access free to all reserves. Arne is a wonderful place to visit and if in the area it’s a really must do activity, personally there is so much beauty in nature to see I would say you need more than one day to fully appreciate all that’s on offer.

    Our visit to Arne.
Arne is a lovely reserve. We did not see many birds but this was probably because we went at high tide. We hoped to see spoonbill and white tailed eagle but were not lucky! To people complaining about the 5 pound per person charge, a to visit Minsmere in Suffolk costs 9 pounds per person. We are life members anyway so we don't have to pay! Would love to visit again!

Beautiful and amazing views best out of season
Visited in late September, we aren't RSPB members but were made just as welcome with £5 admittance. Approach roads to Arne are narrow and single track in places and the car park is quite small so would only recommend visiting here out of holiday season. We took a map and walked out to the bird hides and the very corner of the nature reserve. Enjoyed the views overlooking Poole, Brownsea Island, Long and Round islands. Cafe is really expensive for cake and tea, a lot of items were not priced which didn't help with decision making.

    Nice day out at Arne
Rsbp Site. £5 entry per person. Includes parking. Very nicely laid out level paths with great views across the area and the estuary/Poole harbour. Plenty of birds to watch from the hides. Peaceful setting very nice on a dry day. Good cafe and shop 5mins walk from the car park. Toilets.

    A fabulous relaxing visit
We were so lucky to have a bright and sunny day to visit Arne for the first time, while staying in nearby Poole. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful, both staff and visitors, and we felt that £5 per head was money well spent. We saw many birds, but are not very good at identifying from a distance, a seal, deer and pigs. It was a lovely relaxing day, helped by dogs being required to be on a short lead at all times, so we were not bothered by loose dogs and irresponsible owners. I know the rule is for the benefit of wildlife and not for me, but I benefitted anyway. I would definitely recommend a visit to Arne.

    A beautiful and fantastic site
I love Arne and have been loads of times. It’s such a beautiful site with loads to do and a cafe for when you need an energy boost. Recently I’ve been restricted physically so have used one of their trampers which have been amazing. They are really easy to use and the staff are fantastic at helping you to get going with them. I’m very keen to encourage others to do the same. It opens up most of the site for those who would normally be restricted to where they can go.

Arne really is such a beautiful place and I have visited many times before. Unfortunately I feel I wont be quite so eager in future. Firstly, the £5 parking/entrance has jumped to £7 which considering the state of the 1 toilet available in the car park (which didn't flush, was dirty and a total mess/broken)I thought was a bit much. There are no bins anywhere for dog poo (not even in the car parks) and quite honestly I wasn't overjoyed to put 2 bags in my hot car to ferry home at the end of my trip having just carted them round the whole reserve. I can't help wondering if everyone does or just don't bother to pick it pick it up.
Unfortunately the most beautiful walk viewing the bay is closed (I assume as a covid precaution because of the narrow pathway) but this means that the remaining walk is through the woodland and in fact you could be anywhere in any woods. In fact I have had many a beautiful walk through the New Forest, seen plenty of wildlife and birds and parked for free. There are usually bins at most carparks there too.
There are too may staff being a bit too in your face; checking and double checking if you've paid etc.
The cafe serves nice coffee and cakes and there is plenty of seating.

Hi lydi2018, Thank you for your review and your feedback will be passed on. My deepest apologies that you didn't enjoy your time at Arne. To explain a little about the comments you made, the car park charge includes entry to the reserve and use of the facilities. It contributes to the costs of keeping RSPB Arne such a fantastic place for wildlife and people. We hadn't put the daily charge up since 2015 and we think we're still the best value in East Dorset. Apologies about the condition you found the toilets, this is something we are aware of and are hoping to get funding to improve in future. RSPB Arne is first and foremost a nature reserve and our first priority is to ensure that our visitors don't disturb or damage the wildlife and natural beauty that most people come to enjoy. Unfortunately, a minority of dog owners let their dogs off a lead on the reserve, which can cause huge disturbance to wildlife at any time of year. So, while responsible dog owners who are happy to keep their dogs on a lead and take their dog poo bags away with them are welcome to visit, we do not want to become a "dog-walking site" where people come simply to exercise their dogs. The evidence suggests that this would be encouraged if we provided dog bins. There is also a not insignificant cost to providing and emptying dog poo bins which would be much better spent on buying and managing more land for nature. So, as with any other litter, we ask people to take their dog poo bags away with them. I am unsure which path you mean, since to my knowledge we haven't closed off any paths due to covid19. Our red trail covers many of the areas of RSPB Arne open to visitors, and meanders through woodland, heathland and also passes by the shoreline and saltmarsh - so there is never any doubt about the diversity of habitats and wildlife you can find at Arne. I am sorry your visit did not seem to reflect this. There are large areas of the Arne peninsular which are not open to the public, but are instead 'wildlife only' areas. Perhaps this is what you were referring to? Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss anything further. You can contact me on laura.pringle@rspb.org.uk. You have to book 2 working days in advance to visit & only a very few visitor places available each day.

Communication by phone is not possible and emails are not responded to over the weekend, even though RSPB Arne is open and staffed.

Absolutely appalling if you need any kind of help with access. For getting out into the Dorset countryside, try Kingston Lacey or Durlston Country Park, where there is readable access to *a person* to access a tramper.

Would you visit if you had to email 48 hours in advance, 4 days of over a weekend?

Hello, Ruth, Thanks for your feedback and time to write the review. At the time you wrote the review we were having a few issues, some of which are resolved and some that have been improved. First off, and based on one of your suggestions, we have implemented a new online booking system for the off road mobility scooters (or Tramper). This allows you to book 24/7 and also view availability without having to wait for a response from our Tramper inbox. The link is here: https://events.rspb.org.uk/arne and simply click on Tramper hire and follow the instructions. The phone line through April was out of order for approx. 6 weeks. This has now been resolved by BT and our phones are working again. Finally, it was great to meet you in person last week and I hope you had a great day at Arne. We look forward to you trying out the online booking system and welcoming you back to Arne soon Best wishes David

This reserve is hidden away in Studland and is a real gem.
The reserve features nice paths through the gorgeous Purbeck coast line, these are eminently walkable and tread the line well between being rural but not rocky or paved.
The walks are also well sign posted.

They have adapted to CoVid well too in the entrance and cafe areas (if you ignore the rediculous barriers that seem to have been set up for crowds likely to be seen at Glastonbury and not the five twitchers that would be the daily attendance here). The cafe has a great outdoor covered picnic area with... A log burner which is certainly welcome given the exposed nature of part of the walks).

Hi Chris, Thank you for your lovely review of RSPB Arne. The reason there are barriers in the car parks and around the welcome area is because on numerous days throughout the summer we were packed with visitors and both car parks were full. They simply helped us to control the flow of people on the busiest days. We hope to see you back at Arne when restrictions allow. Best Wishes, the RSPB Arne team.

Such a naturally beautiful area that as a local i have always visited for some fresh air, to stretch the legs and now to show my children. Whats absolutely disgusting is that although we are encouraged to have a healthy active lifestyle and enjoy the outdoors 'its free', extortionate parking charges have been imposed at Arne. I was told there hadn't been a parking increase since 2015, it was £5 to park your car in 2018. Is my £7 being used to pay the RSPB associates in the car park to justify why people have to pay £7 to park even if its just for a couple of hours walk with a newly walking toddler, honestly, it makes me sick. Put an hourly meter in the car park to collect the charges and at least make it more fair to those only wanting to spend an hour or 2 - then maybe you wont need to pay 2 peoples wages to repeat and justify why to every other visitor.

With regards to the justification that my £7 is allowing me access to the facilities, I didn't use your golden loo, which i hope it was for that price, and i'm sure the £14 that i paid for 2 breakfast rolls covered us sitting in your cafe for 30 mins. The site has not changed since i was 13 years old, the routes are the same, the car park the same, we just have a tent taking up about 5 car park spaces and a map equal to that of a hand drawn map.

Such a shame that we wont be returning for our children to experience the area where we grew up, loved and enjoyed the changing seasons.

Dear stealthbird Thank you for saying Arne is beautiful, we think it’s absolutely stunning whatever the weather and whatever the season. The heathland we protect and maintain is a manmade archaeological feature and is particularly special. It is in fact a complex mosaic of habitats, including grasslands, bogs, ponds, mires, scrub, woods and, of course, dwarf shrubs like heather. Without our help this land would soon be succeeded by pine, rhododendron and other invasive plants. The RSPB is a charity and to help us continue our vital conservation work, we ask non-members to pay a car parking/facility fee and parking and use of the facilities are free for RSPB members. If you have any more questions please do contact us at arne@rspb.org.uk. Kind regards, Laura

The Visit Arne walks that volunteers put on regularly are an excellent way to view this beautiful reserve. The walks are very informative and explore the various and diverse habitats that the reserve has to offer.

My most recent was led by Terry, who is a first class host and brings the reserve to life with anecdotes about the history of the site and surrounding area, together with an in depth knowledge of the wildlife to be seen at different times of year. We enjoyed seeing avocets, godwits, egrets and a hobby amongst others. Later in the day I was fortunate to see two of the area's famed ospreys

Whether you know the reserve or are a first time visitor, I can highly recommend one of these walks as an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours

We visited on a Sunday morning and had a really lovely walk down to the beach with our 18 month old.

Saw lots of lovely wildlife - dragonflies, deer, oyster catchers, rabbits and a super friendly robin! Our daughter loved paddling at the beach and collecting piles of shells and stones. We even found some tiny little crabs!

All in all, a lovely place to visit. The cafe had a limited menu due to staffing issues, but we weren't looking to have a "proper" meal anyway. Gorgeous shop - could've spent a fortune, given the chance!

Not sure why other reviews say that parking is unreasonable. We paid £5 per adult to get into the reserve, and were told that it included a parking fee. Can't moan at that when you could stay all day if you wanted to!

Hi sianhope, Thank you for your wonderful review of RSPB Arne. We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit and were able to spot loads of wildlife. Nice to hear you enjoyed the shop and café too - we are developing a new ultra-local menu so pop back to the café on your next visit to sample some local produce! Thank you for saying the £5 per adult entry charge is reasonable, like you say it does include car parking as well as all facilities including trails and hides, and managing the diverse range of habitats we have here. We hope you visit again soon! Best wishes, Laura

We went on a busy but sunny day. Plenty of parking as there is an overflow. Had to pay £5 but free to members of the RSPB, of which there were many judging by the long lens cameras and binoculars being carried. Nice to see lots of birds on the bird feeders at rear of kiosk where you pay. Given colour coded map showing many alternative routes, distances and terrain, which varies from meadow to scrub and heather to woodland, then coast and beach overlooking Poole Harbour. Lovely salty sea smells. Great to be able to sit in the enclosed two storey bird hide with a pair of binoculars. Also a nice rest if you are tired from walking +shelter if it should rain. Paths vary from rough to smooth, but many easy ones for those not so good on their feet, and someone on hand at kiosk to give help and advice anyway. Great cafe and shop near car park for food and refreshment, made a perfect finish to our day.

Very nice area, varied landscape, peaceful, a nice way to spend an afternoon. Lovely deer. As it is run by the RSPB, I expected far more birds than what we saw but that is probably just bad luck on the day. The downside was the "welcome" or lack thereof. Greeted by someone very keen to get us to join the RSPB but unable to tell us much about it other than we would get our carpark money back and the price varied between £ 6 and £ 12 a month for a couple (no idea why the difference in price) and that he would probably "be able to do something", whatever that means... Asked for a leaflet for more info but was told not worth printing because only 2 people sign for every 500 leaflets produced. Chicken and egg I say... Asked for a map and was told to take a photo of a rather basic one available on a nearby table. Not ideal on a sunny day when you cannot see your screen. I do understand the ecological/environmentally friendly aspect of things, but a minimum of information would be helpful. Was eventually asked by another volunteer if I was looking for something specific and armed with the knowledge that we had to follow the red signs to get the most variety, off we went. There are plenty of coloured posts once you are in the thick of the reserve, but as you enter it (when it really matters to newcomers), they are definitely lacking (or misleading). A map here and there (maybe at the hide and the viewpoint where there are already man made structures) would definitely not go amiss. There is no information anywhere inside the reserve as to what to look for, where to look for it, nothing. Quite disappointing and not the best way to attract new customers.

Hi there, Thank you for your review. We always appreciate reviews of RSPB Arne and will try to take on board your comments. To explain a little, the RSPB as a whole organisation is now, and has been for some time, dedicated to helping conserve nature of all kinds, not just birds. Arne is one of the few places in the UK where all six of the UK's native reptiles can be found and is a stunning landscape which consists of dramatic open heathland and ancient oak woodland. There is always something to be spotted at Arne, regardless of the time of year or the weather, so firstly I apologise that you didn't experience this during your visit. In future, if you need any advice on what to spot/ what has been spotted recently, the volunteers in the welcome hut will be more than happy to talk you though recent sightings and where best to see those for yourself. Similarly, I would like to express my apologies that the welcome you received wasn't what you were expecting. Our Membership Officers are always friendly and never pushy, and have answers to everything you could possibly what to know in regard to memberships. Unfortunately, our welcome team of staff and volunteers is particularly stretched due to multiple unavoidable reasons and therefore I apologise that the standard of welcome your received didn't match what I've described above. As for maps, we cannot hand out any maps currently, due to Covid19 restrictions. As a short term solution, we are therefore asking visitors to take a photo of a laminated version of the map handout you would have received under normal conditions. I understand this isn't the easiest of solutions, especially as you say it can be hard to read mobile devices on sunny days, but is the best we can do given the current situation. Alternatively, that same map is available on the RSPB Arne website which you can download and print off at home, if a hard copy is your preference. Thank you for highlighting the lack of signage at the start of our trails and the lack of general interpretation around the reserve. These are both matters that we are already in the process of improving and have ordered new signs and display panels for this exact purpose. Hopefully, if you decide to return to Arne in the coming months, we should have some of these new signs and panels displayed around the reserve. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you would like to discuss anything further. You can contact me on laura.pringle@rspb.org.uk. Took my 6 year old daughter here . First time for both of us, despite living in Poole! What a beautiful place. The purpose of this review is to praise the 2 RSPB wardens on duty, Alan and Lesley. What a lovely pair of human beings! Their passion for the reserve , their love of the birds and their eagerness to help you enjoy your day was tremendous. They were so kind and engaging and their willingness to make our visit memorable was just great. Alan took us to see some lizards and made it clear that next time we were down he would show us some birds etc. It’s so wonderful when you visit somewhere to come across a guide/warden/volunteer who lives for their subject and my daughter enjoyed asking questions and was made to feel very welcome.
The world needs more Alan and Lesleys!!

Arne is beautiful if you are going for a long walk but if you have a young family and just want to visit the cafe it isn't worth it at all, because its just too expensive to get in. You have to pay 5 pound per person just to go to the cafe area so for a family of four it is a lot of money. Such a shame because it would be a nice place for families otherwise.

Hi Daisy4567, Thank you for your review, and for saying that Arne is a nice place for families. To address your concerns about pricing, we changed this to a per person entry charge in April 2022. This is £5 per adult and £2.50 per child, with the first child going free. All children under 5 also go free. Walkers, cyclists and blue badge holders enter for free, and RSPB members always have free entry to the reserve. This is to be in line with the majority of RSPB nature reserves across the country. Our reserve is a special place that support a host of wildlife. We’re only able to carry out our valuable work through the generous support of people like you. I hope that helps to explain our pricing system. Best wishes, Annie
