This was a completely unexpected highlight when we visited the small but lovely, hill-top town of Loro Piceno. Loro Piceno is off the beaten track for most tourists but we have loved visiting just for the 'Peppe Cotto’ experience alone.
You could describe Peppe as ‘a colourful local character’ but it would be a wild understatement. He is a butcher-artist and his shop is his kingdom where anything goes.
When we stopped by this time, disappointingly the shop was not open. We checked again before we left but, sadly, we had no luck. We had been hopeful because on our last visit, it had also looked closed but then Peppe appeared at a window above and beckoned us in.
He is a great entertainer. Theatrical music started as soon as we entered and, wearing a butcher's cap and apron and a bow tie carved from an ox bone, he launched into an exuberant dance routine. Sculptures of bone and carved meat were brought out and a trumpet made entirely of bone and cartilage was played. All the while, Peppe was whipping up cocktails of the local vino cotto (the famous local cooked wine), garnished with slices of ciauscolo (a soft cured pate-like meat that is another local Marche speciality).
We didn’t know what had hit us. It’s all wonderfully whacky and tremendous fun and I can recommend his home-made ciauscolo - delicious.

Our host had encouraged us to visit and had many stories of Peppe's crazy antics, but he's even more over the top than I'd expected. The salami on the glass of vino cotta is better than you'd think. Peppe is an innovative butcher and a flamboyant musician and actor. A must on a walk in the old town. We enjoyed the rolled pork leg as well.

We stumbled across Pepe Cotto’s butcher almost the first day we arrived in Loro Piceno, and on entering we were “confronted” not just by the usual cabinet of meats but an array of press cuttings (with pride of place given to Pepe Cotto’s meeting with Heston Blumenthal) and of course Pepe Cotto himself.

As we entered the shop, Pepe Cotto immediately asked if we would like to try his vino cotto, which we did whilst he proceeded to serenade us and show us numerous posters and special meat “inventions”.

A later visit to find out where the best place was to get vino cotto (his place of course, selling his own vino cotto) Pepe Cotto ended up closing his shop and taking us up the nearby tower with it’s amazing views and the monastery next door with it’s original kitchen.

And on a third visit, he let us take the key to the tower ourselves for another visit.

Hospitality at it’s best – what more can I say.

And is also a brilliant butcher!

He also holds the key to the tower and can arrange a visit to the monastery.

The 'world famous' Peppe Cotto puts on a great display for visitors - music, speeches, tastings of his home-made sausage and ham, a glass of Vino Cotto to wash it down.........Peppe was featured in a Heston Blumenthal 'Roman Feast' and is very much a local character!! Great fun - but it'll be up to you to cook what you buy!!
