Neighborhood: District VII / Jewish Quarter
District VII is the very heart of Budapest and houses the city’s Jewish Quarter. Its streets are lively and colorful, its buildings narrate different histories in an assortment of architectural styles, and its cafes and bars are frequented and loved by the enthusiastic crowds. Grand and magnificent, the striking star of the district is the Great Synagogue, the largest in Europe and one of the biggest in the world. Distinctly Moorish in style, crowned by the twin onion shaped domes, the Synagogue is the very emblem of District VII and one of the main attractions in the capital.

Currently the synagogue is under renovation and the front is covered in scaffolding and screening. From a distance its possible to see the "minarets" and top of the building which must be really beautiful.

It's truly a historical place that all should visit. The Jewish plight in Europe is so engrained with the city's history, it'd be ignorant to ignore such a historical place. You'll love the tour and enjoy all the scenery that goes with it.

Synagogue just opposite Roombach Hotel. Stunning time warp - undergoing renovation males it even more interesting and beautiful. Must see.

We were on a guided tour and went to see the synagogue we were standing outside and it just looked like an old church from the outside. When we went in it literally took my breath away I was not expecting to see it the way it was quite derelict but the architecture was just amazing a truly beautiful building in its time so full of history.

Walk by and take a peak as you head to Grand Synogogue but inside is nothing spectacular and I would have been upset if I paid the entrance fee (which is maybe $2).

Hi there. I am going to Budapest tomorrow and intend doing a tour of the Jewish Quarter on Tuesday. Which company did you go with for your tour? Would you recommend it?
Kind regards
Miriam

We just did Rick Steves walking tour on our own...takes you to 3 synagogues - all worth seeing. Just buy your own tickets at the door. The tour is described in his Budapest guide book.

should I get tickets in advance or can I get them at the door? Is there a guide in the synagogue? Thank you.

We got ours at the door...but it is possible they may not be open when you get there. I don't think you can get tickets in advance. If you are in the Jewish Quarter give it a try...we were the only ones there when we visited back in June.
