I went here in August 2019. I had no idea it was at the top of a hill so I wasn't able to get to the top because I wasn't wearing shoes that were good for hiking. Make sure you wear good hiking shoes so you don't slip on the trail as the trail is small and steep in some places. I would love to go back there and actually see the cliff dwelling. The view from the hill is very nice and there are many gift shops below the hill. If you're afraid of heights, the trail can be a bit scary but it offers a lot of nice views. I believe there are two trails that go to the same place so the other one might be safer.

In the woods along the lakeside from Tihany is a trail up to a collection of cave dwellings formerly inhabited by Greek Orthodox monks in the 11th-14th centuries. It is a bit of a hike/scramble but it's worth it as the caves are atmospheric and completely free to visit. As it takes a bit more effort to get there, you may well find yourself alone - which is a nice antidote to the business of Tihany.

A relaxed tour with some hiking through a shady forest. Great for a hot day being under the fresh foliage of the trees, escape from the crowd, and enjoy the view of the lake. When you reach the aim, the cave dwellings of the past times monks, don't expect something extraordinary. Their age makes them exciting and imagining the lives of the monks, who spent their entire life there. Certainly wasn't a luxurious accommodation.

A pleasant, approx. 2 x 30 minute walking tour to the remain of the monk caves. Follow the "grean line" marked shady trail starting from the shore, slightly uphill, throught the woods. Do not expect anything spectacular, just two caves (two levels) in the rock, used as monk flats in the 11th century. A nice excursion in the forest, 1 hour back and forth.

Nice trail, a lot of great view points to the lake. You will find some info tables with the geo history too.
