Christmas decorations were just coming down when we visited in early January. A life size Santa playing a saxophone greater us in the entry. The original paintings of the life of Christ were beautiful. Birds flew in and out of the church. Not your typical "European Cathedral" and definitely worth a visit. K 2000 entry fee.

I'm a local Buddhist but I believe in and also respect other beliefs and religions, and that's why I gave a visit to this marvelous, astonishing, breathtaking church and it's incredibly superb!
The architecture of the building (red bricks, spires, images or statues), the clean and tidy garden, the peaceful atmosphere, and everything in between. You can buy candles, souvenirs, and books about Christianity at the small shop in the cathedral. Oh, and, you can donate as much as you wish for the maintenance of the church and all the services, too.
Yes, it's the largest church in Myanmar, and if you're in Yangon, you must visit St. Mary's Cathedral as it's one of the most stupendous places not only in Yangon, also in Myanmar.
Doubtlessly, I'll visit again in the future.

St. Mary’s Cathedral is situated on Bo Aung Kyaw Street in Botahtaung Township, Yangon. It was designed by Dutch architect. Construction began in 1895 and was completed in 1899. The interior of the Cathedral is richly decorated with some outstanding examples of featured exquisite stained glass windows. It;s really nice.

Five months after the cathedral was dedicated in 1911 the driving force behind its construction, a Dutch priest called Janzen died frail and crippled at the age of 53. He is buried in the portal of the church. Believers still hold him in high esteem. Building a Roman Catholic church in British India (of which Burma was part) was not an easy job, as catholics lacked the support of the British colonial authorities who belonged to Anglican Church which is headed by the British king or queen (not by the pope in Rome).
Janzen got the support of Joseph Cuypers another Dutchman, son of Pierre Cuypers (architect of the Rijksmuseum and Central Station in Amsterdam). Joseph followed into his father's footsteps as is visible to lovers of architecture. The neo-gothic style of the cathedral, the red brick material used, the twin towers and colorful vaults all bear the hallmark of the Cuypers. The stained glass windows blown out during WOII have been replaced by beautifully new stained glass made in Thailand. The Thai company did a good job. Also note the reliëfs of the cloister in social realist style. Remarkable are the sparrows who seem to enjoy flying in and out through the opened windows.
Though the cathedral is dedicated to Saint Mary, other (male) Saints lovingly caring for little children and the suffering of Christ are major themes. At the entrance is a sculpture of Christ with a lam on his shoulders. The lam symbolizing, the taking away of sins. At the main altar is Christ on a cross, symbolizing sacrifice for the sins of mankind

The church is very beautiful and quiet.
I went there to attend Saturday Mass. The Mass ceremony is very simple.
They have English Mass on Mon-Sat 5 PM and Sun at 8 am

...the place was closed and I could not enter, so I had to settle for a few pics from the street.
It is a nice piece of architecture and it shines amidst a rather shabby - yet central - neighborhood.

This is a very nice cathedral in Yangon. Catholicism is decidedly a minority religion here, representing about 1% of the nation's population. People from other traditions who visit this church do so, therefore, in a spirit of openness and interest. However, there is precious little here in the way of welcome or the availability of educational materials. This is a mistake that the archbishop really ought to do something to address, since this is cathedral is his personal seat.

A large Cathedral with very interesting architecture & beautiful stained glass windows & religious statues. Well worth a visit to something you would not have expected to have survived over the centuries

The church was well maintained and clean and easy to find. We attended the English service but the Homily was still in native language so was not able to understand.

Kind of cool to see a church in the city and it is impressive. However it’s not something I would necessarily go out of the way for.

Good Day from Italy. Could you possibly let me know about possibilities of attending (or organizing) a Catholic Mass in Bagan (any time between Oct 31 and Nov 02 , 2018) for a small party of 15 attendants. Thank you in advance for an answer.
