This is a wonderful 45-minute show (a little more than 60 minutes with the introduction, discussion, and taking pictures). Please don't miss this opportunity to experience an authentic traditional Myanmar theatrical performance. The show is appropriate and enjoyable for all ages. The location of the theatre is actually in a living room apartment, but that actually adds to the intimate atmosphere. The puppets (marionettes) are absolutely beautiful and imbued with so much character. The artistry exhibited by the puppet masters is top-notch. You can also arrange to have a puppet made for you, which we will certainly do!

We visited with our children ages 11, 10, 8, and 5. The show length was perfect for young children. We appreciated the explanation of the puppet tradition. It was also very easy to arrange for a private show with the manager replying to emails very quickly.

Walked in and did not know what to expect. Received a history lesson in very good English and watched such a scintillating performance. The talent and skill they have is unbelievable and so entertaining. Each skit has a short brief before so it makes it easier to understand what the puppets are performing. Would definitely recommend.

Obviously, the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda is the number 1 must see destination if you visit Yangon. But not far behind is the traditional Puppet Theatre of Mr Htwe Oo.
This theatre is Mr Htwe's private initiative and is in the course of time quite well known also outside Myanmar (a.o. thanks to shows in Germany, Netherlands etc.).
The shows in Myanmar take place at Mr Htwe's living room as they still do not have a dedicated theatre (still a dream...).
The very interesting show take about 1-1,5 hours in total including a lot of information about traditional Myanmar puppets. The puppets are very beautiful and the puppet show by professional puppeteers (incl. son and daughter of Mr Htwe) quite fascinating.
Visitors of all ages (especially children) would love the puppet show.
The location of the puppet theatre (i.e. Mr Htwe's apartment) is not too far from Yangon's downtown (about Kyat 1500 - 2000 by taxi). You need to make an appointment for one of the shows (practically every day in the afternoon). In his e-mail confirmation, Mr Htwe will send a file attachment giving clear instructions in Burmese for taxi drivers.

Came across this via TA and it was indeed an amazing and insightful puppet show in a private setting in a small "theatre" converted from a living room.
There were only 3 of us and Mr Htwe took time to share the nuances of Myanmese puppetry and was patient in answering our queries. The 45-minute duration was just nice and we get to see the puppet masters (including Mr Htwe's own two children) in action, something I don't think we will get to see in a commercial setting.
Really enjoyed the experience. Wish Mr Htwe's every success in his endeavour to eventually stage his puppet show in a bigger space with the 7 live musicians.
In the meantime, I highly recommend fellow travelers to check out his show.
P/S: The place may be a bit out of the way in a residential area, but with Grab, it is a non-issue.

It requires a bit of whimsy and willingness to open yourself to the wonder, but this is a transporting, otherwordly experience that is loaded with charm. As other reviewers have highlighted, this is top to bottom a family-run experience where the art and customs of puppeteering are on display from two generations. The family of puppeteers live and breathe their craft. They are literally keeping this practice alive from their own living room.
It is hard to find, but just have the taxi driver drop you off at one of the big intersections and you navigate through the neighborhood streets, hopefully someone on the street will be able to point you in the right direction. It literally is in someone's house and I wasn't sure how to feel at first, but quickly you give in to the intimacy of experiencing this whole thing with a small group of people.
I was rapt in awe for the whole show. The music, the focus and dedication, the expressiveness of the movements, the years of history in this practice all intertwined in a dance of wonder and whimsy. After the show the family is happy to have you try the puppets out and take pictures with them, and they'll graciously show you their full collection.
Highly recommended.

Puppetry in Myanmar is very hard to survived and there are few families remaining in Yangon. I am very of being organizer for these puppeteers who are still keeping this tradition alive. Moreover, I am very lucky about my kids who are interested in puppetry and learned to inherit from veteran puppet masters and puppeteers. I hope them to keep this kind of tradition for the future. Thanks a lot for your kind review.

This is a great way to get introduced to the world of the Myanmar puppeteer tradition. We first got a good explanation on how the puppets are made and where they are connected with the ropes. Then we got a 45 min show with various elements of the puppet culture. Then at the end we could play with 2 puppets ourselves. This is not easy as the puppets are heavy! Then we went behind the stage to see all the puppets closer.
The family that hosts the show in their house is very enthusiastic about their tradition and brings that feeling onto their public. They do their utmost to let you feel comfortable.
For us this was a great way to spend the afternoon!

My boyfriend and I heard about this show through trip advisor and were lucky to catch them while in town. Though the performance is small (in their living room!), the artists are professionals who are invited to perform all over the world. Despite their busy schedule, they spent lots of time teaching us about the history and art of puppetry, even letting us try it out. We were the only two in attendance and were impressed with the care they put into our special performance. The show is a condensed version of the much longer traditional festival but they gave helpful context of the stories so it was easy to follow. The venue is difficult to find but the neighbors saw us and helped direct us to the apartment (by ringing a bell on a string from the ground floor). Mr Htwe is very passionate and generous with his craft and we highly recommend his performance to other travelers.

Thank you very much for your visit to our home, support to puppeteers and kind review about our show. I am so sorry for my short response due to being busy in these days by the preparation to be participated in "Harmony World Puppet Carnival in Bangkok, Thailand" from 1 to 10 of November.

I came with no reservation and was kindly accommodated. This wonderful family is so talented. I finally got to see their famous marionettes in action and I was not disappointed. Eacb scene was explained in English, so we understood what was going on. Highly recommended!

The puppet show is exquisite- a beautiful insight into old culture in Myanmar. The puppets are amazing to look at and the skill of the puppeteers gives you 2 performances to watch at once; they are extremely talented. Essential when in Myanmar!

Hi, how long is the show and what age would you recommend for children?
Shannon M
Westminster, CO17 contributions
It’s about an hour long. I would say older kids (10+) might like to learn about the history and the role this type of puppet show played in politics. There isn’t very much dialog, so I think younger kids will grow impatient quickly. The theater only seats about 12-14 people. My favorite part was learning about the puppets, how they are made...and watching the puppeteers control every little movement.
