Thought it would be fun to drive around and see some of these novelty works of art. They were really hard to find and we only could track down two of them. Cute and creative but would have liked to have been able to see a few more.

What a cute idea for the town! Finding the peanuts was like a road scavenger hunt. Be careful, though, to have a driver that still pays attention to the road. We saw about a third of the peanuts on the day we were there. Some of the painted peanuts are inside the locations, and some of the locations are on side roads even though it looks on the map like they are along the main road. Stop at the Visitor Center for a map...even if they are not open, we found brochures outside that had the map in them for the peanuts in town and for the murals in downtown Dothan. We drove around looking for both of these. There are many eateries in town, too. After we found these, we headed back on the road on our trip. Allow a good hour plus if you really want to find them all.

I have never given a 1 star review of anything. Until I tried the peanuts around town. Dealing with traffic, awful looking peanuts, and a sense of my life being wasted are the main reasons why I would not recommend this activity to anyone with anything else to do. This is seriously...just the worst.

Firstly the peanuts are spread all over town and some of the peanuts you find are just painted a single color. And when you find the peanut...it's just that...a peanut. It may be decorated as captain america, a dalmatian, or some other creation or color. I found none of the peanuts pleasing to look at and the long drives in between with nothing to really see or do didn't make it any more fun.

Another issue is once you find a peanut generally you're at a bank, and oil change place, or some other place of business with zero tourism value.

I tried this once solo and it was very boring and again with a group of people and both times I found it to be no fun and uninteresting.

While I can't really imagine myself driving around exclusively to look at the peanuts, I can certainly envision those with younger children having a fantastic time doing exactly that. To the rest of us the peanuts are an entertaining reminder of the importance of peanuts to the local economy. (I believe something like 70% of peanuts worldwide are grown within 100 miles of Dothan)

When I arrived in Dothan, Alabama, I began to notice peanuts everywhere; peanuts around town, in stores, in bushes and even in unusual places. I said to myself, “What’s going on here? Has Dothan been taken over by a bunch of nuts?” Those of you that know me know I was about to get right in the middle of this.

I made a stop at the Dothan Area Convention & Visitors Bureau to get information. That’s where I met Bob Hendricks. He gave me so much information and my official “Peanuts around Town” map. That’s when it all began to make great sense.
.
.You see, Dothan is known as the “Peanut Capital of the World.” More than half of all the peanuts in the United States are grown within a 100-mile radius of this town. The average 1.5 million tons produced each year is often more than the production of peas and beans combined.

Dothan is the host to the National Peanut Festival, each year in November. It is a two week event that honors local peanut farmers and celebrates the harvest. So, I guess you can say peanuts are king in Dothan. This only makes it fitting to have a peanut statue of The King. That’s right! Peanut Elvis Presley is located right in the lobby of the visitor’s center.

The public art project “Peanuts around Town” started out as a fundraiser for the revival of downtown to provide funding for the addition of two new murals. In this project, local businesses, civic organizations and individuals purchased and decorate their peanut according to their own concept.

Currently there are an estimated 40 peanuts around Dothan with each sculpture being unique and having its own story. One story I really enjoyed was the one of Mr. Trawick. Byron “Cotton” Trawick was known in Dothan as “The Peanut Man.” For over 25 years, he sold peanuts at the busiest intersection to locals and travelers. A peanut statue has been placed in his memory on this very spot. I find it precious that he often told his patrons, “Have a good day and let the Lord ride with ya.” HIs parting remarks are printed on the barrel next to his statue.

After a long afternoon, on my scavenger hunt, I headed back to my hotel to check out the pictures I had taken and plan my attack for the next day. While doing research on the internet, I found out about a peanut that was NOT on my official map. It immediately became my favorite peanut of ALLl! It was one honoring “Dancin” Dave Whatley.

If peanuts are the king of Dothan, “Dancin” Dave was the King of the Wiregrass. Everyone knew Dave and he didn’t need music to dance his way into your heart. He could be seen all over town; at all festivals and events or just walking the streets. Dave was endearing and was loved by all who met him. He lived to bring a smile to everyone.

The peanut in his honor, located on the square in Headland, Alabama, was made in his image, wearing his signature white suit, parade gloves and sailor hat with “DAVE” in black letters. From all I have learned about Dave, this is extremely fitting.

If you love a great scavenger hunt, Peanuts around Town is the one is for you! It was a blast darting all over town with great excitement and anticipation to see the next design. It will take you all day, if not two to complete your hunt. You’ll visit some very interesting locations along the route.

I will share only a few photographs of my peanuts around town, so no one overdoses on too many legumes.

Fun way to kill time. Can pick up a map at the commerce building. We just drove around looking for them. Some very unique ones that makes Dothan just a little special.

Peanuts Around Town is a fun activity for the whole family. Peanuts are dressed up at various locations around town. This makes for great photo opportunities. We stopped at a few locations and took photos. We saw a peanut dressed as a cowboy and another holding a cell phone (to name a few). It's a fun activity to look for peanuts as you drive around Dothan.

We were camping near Dothan and woke up to a dreary, rainy day. The parents couldn't be stuck in the camper all day with the kids, so we looked up something to do in the area and discovered this. What a great way to keep the kids entertained on a rainy day! The kids LOVED the search and we found 31 peanuts! They wanted to drive through town and look for more a second time. My youngest asked later in the week if we could go back to "Peanut World"! Definitely recommend stopping at the Dothan Visitor Center and picking up their "Peanuts Around Town" map. There are many we would have missed without the map. However, we also found several not listed on the map. Kids will really enjoy this.

I love riding around and seeing these peanuts everywhere. When you're the city that's known for them, it's a cute but appropriate little reminder.

A fun activity. Drive around Dithan and see how many peanut people you can find.
Examples: cowboy, doctor, mechanic, tanning booth. I think the visitor center may have a list.
