The Kimball it ain't. I consider this a most unsuccessful project by a fine architectural firm which means, to me, that they had a client with too many agendas..........the word ungapotchkie comes to mind. The views are great. The views distract from the experience of looking at art. Surely, this would be fine for the groups of 3rd graders who will be coming but for serious people wanting to see serious art, no way Jose........or whatever Mr. Perez' first name it. And, by the way, what a ridiculous way to re-brand the Miami Art Museum. What a conceit.

Stunning building and interesting collections

With its own Metromover stop the Perez Art Museum Miami is easy to get to. The site, with its patio bench planters, open air feeling and views of the water, is beautifully designed. At first it seemed like there was not a huge amount to see but it is not clear how much there is here until you wander, especially on the second floor.
The Ai Wei Wei exhibit was very thought provoking and presented with enough context. Don't miss "A Human Document," a selection of historic and contemporary works from the Miami-based collection of Ruth and Marvin Sackner that synthesize word and image. The representations of Dante's work (Heaven, Purgatory and Hell) are wonderful and the other items are really intriguing.

Fantastic art inside a great building!
Many other reviewers emphasize the building but the art itself was great and the exhibits very informative.
As mentioned by other reviewers this building is amazing! At the time we visited the surrounding area was still under construction (and will be for some time as a new museum is being built next door) and walking to the PAMM was a bit of a hassle but well worth it.
There is also a cafe that looks very interesting (we only had coffee and tea but the menu and food looked very good and it was crowded when we were there). There are chairs on the patio outside the cafe where one could spend the afternoon overlooking the bay.
As mentioned by other reviewers this building is amazing! At the time we visited the surrounding area was still under construction (and will be for some time as a new museum is being built next door) and walking to the PAMM was a bit of a hassle but well worth it.

While the exhibits were just okay,(ultra-contemporary and fit to please certain tastes) the structure itself and the setting makes the visit most worthwhile.

Off to a very promising start!

Modern art has been lacking a more permanent home in Miami. The annual Art Basel magic will now have a place to linger from year to year.
It is not an enormous museum, but yet manages to exhibit an extensive amount of art. Exciting architecture along with, for the most part, well curated exhibits make the Pérez Art museum a must see for any art enthusiast.
It's all new still which is apparent not only by the fact that there are construction workers finishing the surrounding parking lot and other parts outside, but also by the staff's somewhat uneven level of service. Particularly the security guards should be a lot more discrete and not act like they're visitors themselves, but more professional.

Welcome Addition to Southeast Florida Cultural Scene

Open less than two weeks, PAMM is stunning! The most exciting part of the new museum is its building, which is itself a work of art. In an increible setting physically, on the waterfront, with the causeway on the left, and the cruise ships on the right, the museum fits right in. Together with the new children's museum and the future science museum, PAMM is a crown jewel in the tiara of Miami's culture district. The spaces within the museum are expansive and breathtaking. At the present, they house many fascinating examples of modern and contemporary art, as well as the Americana of the original Perez collection, which is significant unto itself. At present PAMM is specializing in the work of the Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei. The display of his work alone is worth a trip to PAMM.
I believe that PAMM could become a major art museum, as it develops its program and rotates its exhibits. We look forward, as Floridians, to witnessing its flourishing future. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!

The museum just opened it's door and it's beautiful shape and material , it's high ceilings are going to be the space for great art.
Ai Weiwei's new edition of his Forever Bicycles sculpture already found it's place to form a three-dimensional structure creating an incredible visual effect.
The direct surroundings of the museum still need to be finalized but you can already see the great architecture.

MIAMI 'S NEWEST ART MUSEUM

Just visited the new Perez Art Museum Miami or PAMM, as part of Miami Art Basel. The beautiful site on Biscayne Bay, contains the spectacular building which was designed by the architectural firm Herzog and de Mueron, who also designed the Tate Modern in London. The use of gorgeous wood and stunning views through the huge glass windows, makes walking through the building an event in itself. (Herzog and de Mueron have another building at 1111 Lincoln in Miami Beach, with a very incredible car park, don't miss it).
For Miami Basel the Ai Wei Wei show was the big draw. It's absolutely incredible and should be seen by everybody. Outside the museum are the Ai Wei Wei Chinese astrological symbols sculptures, which create a very inviting way to enter into the exterior space of the building.
I can't say that the rest of their current collection, which is displayed over two floors, is enough to keep me coming back. There seems to be an unevenness to the way the work has been curated and hung throughout the galleries. This led us to feel confused about what we were looking at rather than more informed after we had viewed a room or section of the art works.
There are some gems here, such as an exquisite constructed memoir of the work of Marcel Duchamp, that the artist had created, 3 of Andy Warhol's boxes, a fantastic collection of Diane Arbus and Robert Frank and Walker Evans photographs, an early(1960's)Sol Lewitt sculpture, a really beautiful Ellsworth Kelly painting/sculpture, a Donald Judd box, Robert Rauschenberg painting, as well as a piece by Roy Lichenstein and Jasper Johns.
To be fair, there is other work that is very good, a collection of early feminist art, lots of opportunity to be introduced to Latin artists from all over Central and South America, and except for the Botero painting which was whimsically wonderful, I am not as familiar with these artists and their work. There is also a great photograph of Frieda Kahlo at work, in the room with all the photographs.
If you get tired, there are thoughtfully designed areas where you can sit down and rest and relax on comfortable couches, set into what feels like a private space.
There is a fabulous public space that looked so inviting, for lectures and events that the museum will be holding. There are also many family/children's programs that are on tap for the future.
There is a ground floor restaurant, which was very crowded, so we did not get a chance to go in, as well as a decent selection of books, etc. in their new gift shop area.
The Perez had just opened it's doors for Miami Art Basel. It will need time to develop it's permanent collection, so I am hoping that the beautifully designed expansive and rich interiors will house an equally impressive collection of artworks in the future.
There is construction going on behind the Perez for a new science museum.Once that is also completed, this will certainly be a great area for both visitors and citizens of Miami to come down to. The Perez seems to also have some unfinished areas outside their building, which look as though they will contain some gorgeous landscaping and outdoor seating, looking onto the blue waters of Biscayne Bay. Hmmm, on second thought, I guess I will be coming back!!

What time is the final entry on a Saturday. I think I saw that it closes at 6pm?

It closes at 6. They don't say a final entry anywhere. We saw some students come and go within a 20-30 minute period. We were there an hour. If you read every single sign or posting you could easily be there for 2 hours. There are also lots of neat sculptures on the grounds near the museum and parking garage.

I would also concur with others who recommend a taxi.
Once you are there, I would ask at the desk what they would
suggest for getting back. If you spending more time
downtown after the museum, there is a circulator bus.
