Was advertised online on both the Trust's and English Heritage's website as open but arrived only to find that it was all shut up with notice saying this would be for whole day. Sadly on last weekend before it closes for the season. Do appreciate unforseen eventualities can occur but online information should at least be updated to ensure people don't travel long distances only for a disappointment.

This fascinating medieval building is owned and run by the local community but is in the guardianship of English Heritage. Its history is brought to life by an excellent introduction by a knowledgeable local volunteer, who also provides a useful leaflet and a room-by-room guide. Upstairs, there is an impressive museum of local finds - again, put together by local people. You can get in free with your English Heritage card but, if you are not a member, the £2.50 entry fee is a snip.

Maison Dieu (House of God) is on the A2 in Faversham, Kent. It has been a Royal lodge commissioned by Henry III, monastery, hospital, retirement home & hostel over the years. Maison Dieu became a grade 2 listed building in 1950.Now it is run by English Heritage. Its quite a small building and you can see everything in under one hour, but well worth a visit. I have put a few pictures up and a short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riaBzw2fhH8

This extraordinary building is just a tiny remnant of what was a large sprawling place, with Royal visitors and some sort of hospital service for lepers and the like. Pilgrims, travellers, crusaders, scholars, clerics, all stayed here. The rooms are extraordinary and full of interesting local artefacts, and a human skull.

As an English Heritage member, since I was staying in the area I thought I would check this place out. You can't miss it with the way it looks!

I was greeted by a very welcoming lady who was clearly enthusiastic about the place and Faversham in general. She gave a lot of information and was happy to answer any questions. She was definitely full of knowledge!

This may look like a small building, but there is A LOT of history here and the surrounding area. There is plenty of information (be prepared to do a lot of reading!) and lots to see. Upstairs it talks a lot about the Roman history of the area with a decent sized collection of artefacts (and skulls). It was a nice surprise inside with all there is to see, so allow yourself more time than expected to see it all.

It's a great building that we're so fortunate to have around today. It's a must for anyone visiting the area.

On the third day of a pilgrimage on foot from London to Canterbury I was interested to visit Maison Dieu in the knowledge that pilgrims had been calling in here for centuries for rest before the final day's walk.
With very informative displays and helpful staff on hand it was a fascinating insight into the history of Maison Dieu which in former days was much larger complex of buildings. Be aware though of the very limited opening hours .

Really enjoyed my visit to Maison Dieu. Entry is only £3,or free with English heritage membership.I have a particular interest in historical attractions that involve the Romans and this enabled me to indulge my interest fully.Lots of fascinating Roman relics on display here uncovered from the surrounding area. Maison Dieu was the site of a former hospital,it's a 12th century thatched building and looks quaint from both the inside and outside with all it's impressive timber framework.Meant to get a fridge magnet from here, but unfortunately forgot to do so on my way out. Maison Dieu is located in the Ospringe area of Faversham and is a little way out from the town centre, but well worth seeing.

This house and museum is a little gem, at £3 entry you can't go wrong. It is small, like most medieval buildings, but it contains a lot of history and has seen many of England's Kings and Queens go past throughout history. It was once part of a larger monastic complex that contained royal apartments, but sadly they are all gone. The galleries up stairs contain a great display of Roman artefacts excavated from nearby cemeteries dug in the 1920's. Plus a mixture of medieval artefacts from excavations in the 1970's from when the monastery complex across the road was developed for housing. It is amazing what a small community will do to preserve and keep a significant medieval building alive for the public to see.
