This was a spur of the moment visit and despite what it says it is definitely very much open! This is a heritage site in the making. Run exclusively by volunteers they are working to develop this historic airfield so it can be preserved as living history as an airfield in both the first and second world wars. Don't expect a slick visitor attraction, this is British amateurism at it's best. Warm welcome by everyone, defended by the local home guard and containing a collection of old aeroplanes, cars. Motorbikes and an "air raid experiance" in a genuine shelter. Tea and cakes in the NAFFI. this is a real find amd well worth a couple of hours to be in the real place of early military and civil aviation.
Thanks to all for a very rewarding visit

Wonderful site run by a team of friendly, knowledgable and enthusiastic volunteers. Well worth a visit and the entrance fee all goes to support the work. I would highly recommend a visit and I will certainly go back.

There is a free guided tour at 1pm on the last Sunday of each month, (check website for alterations). It lasts around 90 minutes and includes access to the 3 history centres on the site. The 3 centres are RAF architecture, aeroplanes and classic vehicles. The site is completely volunteer managed so there is no cafe and the toilets and facilities are basic, if you book ahead they will provide sandwiches and drinks but you can just take your own. So what's it like? A gem! This is RAF HOOTON PARK so some of it is like a World War 2 film set (only real) and they have aeroplanes! They also have old buses, lots of them, and classic vehicles like war time trucks. So what's it worth in travel time? A half hour if you're a regular person, one hour if you're into RAF history or buses.

A place that needs to be treasured for the unique memories of the flying done from here during the first and second world wars. Anyone interested in flying must visit. We had a superb guided tour with a very knowlegable guide. He paid tribute to the Vauxhall Company that made this Trust a viable entity growing from the Sports and Social club to a collection of hangars, one undergoing major reburbishment, workshops and museum with old and new engines, aeroplanes, parts of planes and privately owned transport collections and model boat club.
We are determined to re-visit on an 'event' day

It is ok for a short visit, it you are passing. However although I expected it to be small, was even smaller than I thought. I thought I would see the vehicles in the photographs and they were not there, so I think they were taken on a special day. However the exibits they do have are very interesting and detail the history of the place, so If you love history, love looking at photos of history and like exibits from yesteryear, then pop in for a short visit

Me & my partner have been wanting to visit here for ages but just never got round to it, but today we made the effort to go and we are both so glad we did. I’ve lived in Ellesmere Port all my life and never knew this was here. Take my hat off to the tour guides who run this place for doing a remarkable job full of knowledge and willing to answer any questions. They are undergoing some restoration at the moment so not all hangers were accessible but this wasn’t a problem as there was still plenty to see. Looking forward to making a return visit in the new year.

Went here on the Heritage open day series in September. Didn't know what to expect but the basic tour lasts about an hour or so. There was also a free bus tour in a historic bus of the surrounding area visiting points of historic interest. We arrived at the site at 10.30am for the tour scheduled for 11 am. We didn't leave until 4.30pm it was so interesting!
The volunteers are all so enthusiastic and interesting to talk to. There is so much to see. Military vehicles of the Griffin Trust, buses, the large old hangars, aircraft wings, fuselage and parts. Workshops and a historic items sale room with books, CD/DVD's glassware and even a bren gun ammo box!
You have the chance of a trip down into an air-raid shelter for an air-raid experience. (This is not wheelchair friendly as you have to descend the original steps underground.)
There is also a model boat club on the site. There is also a 46ft Vosper RAF rescue launch awaiting some serious TLC.
This museum is only open at limited times, so check via telephone or internet. It is all free but runs on donations. Well worth a visit and worth a tenner at least!

A little known and publicised museum. The main hanger has a collection of classic vehicles and there are also RAF history centres featuring architecture and aeroplanes and engines. Limited opening so check first. Best visit on an event day.
