Worth a visit, disappointed the church wasn't open unlike several others we visited in the area. Nothing prepares you for the view as you walk around the rear of the church ... I won't spoil it by describing it. Have a look at the communal grave of the shipwreak crew of the SS Mohegan and google it ... so sad

Just passing by and spotted the canon in the church yard, really old graves and then we met a lovely man who told us all about the church, then took us in, even though they were locking up. It's really interesting, very old in parts and fantastic ceiling. Definitely worth a visit and hopefully meet on of the locals there as they have so much information to share, very unexpected history. Great visit.

An old and interesting church, large by village standards with a churchyard that contains the bodies of hundreds of sailors fishermen and strangely of soldiers, all from ships wrecked on the perilous rocks on this the east coast of the Lizard peninsula.
Among others there were the 132 man crew of HMS Primrose, of whom only one was saved. This happened on the same stormy night on January 1809 that the transport ship "The Dispatch" was wrecked on the Manacle Ricks, just off the coast here. She was carrying 104 officers and men of the 7th Hussars returning from the Peninsula War.
The "John" was a barque of 486 tons engaged in transporting emigrants from Plymouth to Quebec in Canada. On the night of 3 May 1855, the John had two hundred and eighty seven passengers and crew on board when she hit the Manacle rocks, and was later driven broadside on to the rocks off Lowland Point. In the rush to get off the ship, the crew fought with the passengers for places on the lifeboats, the Captain being one of the first to leave. In the event one hundred and ninety three people were drowned, including sixty six children and sixteen infants.
The Captain was later arrested and convicted of manslaughter
Just some of the stories of dire tragedy that are remembered in this churchyard
A curiosity within the church are stairways set in the wall that go nowhere.
These are "Rood Stairs"
A stair leading to the upper gallery sometimes constructed above a rood screen which is .set across the width of the chancel arch. To access this gallery a curving stair was often set into the wall beside the chancel arch. The stair would lead through the thickness of the wall behind the arch and emerge at rood gallery level. Many rood screens were destroyed during the Reformation, so you sometimes see the upper exit of the stair as an orphaned doorway opening beside the chancel arch, seemingly leading nowhere. This church contains three, indicating that the church was periodically extended, and the chancel arch together with its rood and new stairway repositioned further down the body of the church, each time leaving the previous stairway in-situ
All in all, it's a very interesting church, and well worth taking your time looking at.

St Keverne church, named after its founding monk dates back to before the Norman Invasion, and then back to Neolithic times, some 7500 years. The Church is unusually topped off by tower and a spire, and retains the heritage of more prosperous times with a 32pd canon from HMS Primrose wrecked on the Manacles, said to have been dragged ashore by the sole survivor, a drummer boy. (Shade of Sam!) The church has a peal of 10 bells and was host to the Gof rebellion. Check out the wooden pew ends, and the chancellery. The old wind organ has gone, but its sound remains to keep the timbers shivering.

A quiet refuge with a bit of history, set in a pleasant off the track village

We stopped to have a look while waiting for something to eat at then near by Three Tuns. The church wasn’t open but the view from the rear of the church was stunning. The grave yard had been well looked after.

Lovely village church in the corner of the square. We wanted to visit as we had read it contained lots of sailors graves, I am not sure we found this, but it was a lovely churchyard and inside the church was calm and peaceful where you could light a candle.

Staying in St Keverne for the week we thought we would visit the local church.
To our surprise it was open to visitors even though no one was in attendance.
For a village church we found it quite large and very interesting.
A massive grave yard housing many from a ship wreckage in the area
A lovely visit

We received a wonderful welcome when we attended morning worship. The church is beautiful with a long history. I even enjoyed walking around the graveyard attached. The chiming of the clock and the bells was an added bonus.

This beautiful church stands proud over the market square in St Keverne just across the place from the hotel we were staying in. Unfortunately it was closed while we were there but the back of the church offers some amazing views. Lovely architecture too

Such an amazing church, steeped in so much history, so peaceful there and was surprised how old the headstones were there and so sad to see the infant mortality rate.
