About
Beaumaris Castle on the island of Anglesey is famous as the greatest castle never built. It was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales – and perhaps his masterpiece. A UNESCO World Heritage Site in the care of Cadw, Beaumaris Castle has a perfect concentric design, is surrounded by a water moat, and boasts stunning views over the Menai straits and Eryri (Snowdonia). The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for unexpected closures, opening times, events, and site facilities.

    Great ramparts.
Really enjoyed the castle. The ramparts stairs are steep and may not be suitable for everyone but they are worth the climb. We have an 18 month old and a 3 year old and they really enjoyed climbing the stairs but you need to keep a close eye as the railings have large gaps which small people can drop through. The keep is really interesting as it still has many areas you can walk around. There is a children’s park close by which was nice for the kids afterwards.

    Excellent castle visit
So many levels and hallways, nooks and crannies to explore. And the views are spectacular. A must-see in Beaumaris. (Only one complaint - they need to clean up the moat, which I’m sure is an expensive and intensive undertaking.)

    Beaumaris Castle
If you visit Anglesey, Beaumaris Castle should be top of your list. Similar to Conwy and Caernarfon, this castle is in reasonably good condition and one of Edward I 's mighty fortresses. Great for the big kids and the little kids with lots to see, explore and learn. Great views too!

    Excellent place to visit.
Excellent place to visit. This castle has a moat all the way round. Lots of places to walk round. Like tunnel walkways . More intact than I thought it would be. Makes it a very interesting place to walk round. Would definitely recommend this.

    Returned after 40 odd years
Beautiful castle ruins and well maintained! Visited here over 40 years ago and really couldn’t remember it but I’m glad I came back. The town is welcoming with pubs and eateries of many choices!

Rainy day trip with a dog
Took dog on a rainy day. Took in turns to go to upper levels as no dogs allowed would have been lovely on a sunny day with a guide or guide book. Just nice to see history.

    Interesting place
Interesting place, only an hours worth of time spent here max. I’d say a little expensive for what there is to see but if you’re in the town pop in. You can take the dog in but they aren’t allowed to walk round the walls on the upper levels

    Brilliant castle
Amazing!!!!! I love castles and this one did not disappoint, amazing loved being able to explore the ramparts, go through the inner keep walls, I would have loved this place as a child. The town itself was incredibly busy but the castle was not, you can park in a field opposite the castle (you have to pay) Would definitely recommend going but not if you have mobility issues as you won’t get the full experience there is a lot of spiral staircases

    Stunning Welsh Castle at Beaumerris.
Looking around a really well laid out castle. You can look into every crook and nock. Lot's of information on the boards and in the guide. My only problem was no toilets on site. A toilet should be provided as the entrance area was selling hot and cold drinks. The toilet I was told to use looked like it charged 20pence to use but on the day we visited there was a craft show on the space next to the public toilets so they were free to use.

Lots of the castle can be accessed and the walk along the top walls gives good views. Unfortunately the chapel was closed when we visited but I’m unsure why.
There’s not a lot of information about how the different parts of the castle would have been used - perhaps we needed to buy a guide book for that, but we paid £22.60 for a family of 4 which was enough for an hours visit.
There was a film being shown in a small, unventilated room but no social distancing and no mask wearing put us off from investigating this further.
There is a very small gift shop with the usual stuff on offer. No cafe or toilets on site.

Beautiful place visited in winter will go back in summer for another look. Lovely grounds perfect for a picnic in summer. Pay a fee to go in £14.00 for twp a little over priced in winter as once you've had a look around you don't want to b hanging about, in summer I feel you could spend more time sitting in the grounds. Would of been nice to have the option to have a hot beverage in there.

Beaumaris Castle is an imposing well-preserved site and is known as 'the greatest castle never built'. After King Edward I had conquered Wales he built a number of strongholds to preserve his hold on the newly-conquered lands. Beaumaris Castle was the last to be started (in 1295) but was never finished because King Edward, who was also fighting a war in Scotland, simply ran out of money. What is seen todays was built in just five years by Master Mason James of St George, the master of the King's work in Wales. Tickets for the castle have to be obtained in advance from the easy to follow website. There is plenty of parking not far from the castle and, after entering through the Covid governed Visitor Centre, you are free to wander all over the castle. Throughout the grounds there are plenty of hand sanitiser stations available and the only places where there are one way systems are in the Visitor Centre, the walks through the rooms and the Battlements Walk. Masks need to be worn in the Visitor Centre, the audio-visual display room and the walks through the rooms. A guide book is available at the Visitor Centre but there are some information boards in the grounds. Dogs are also allowed in certain parts of the site.

We had a really great day at Beaumaris with our your children. All of the lower areas are buggy/disabled friendly but to go inside/on the walls you need to climb the stairs. Not an issue for us as we left our buggy at the bottom and collected it later. It was very quiet and the one way system worked perfectly although the castle itself is very large so there's no issue. The tickets are pre booked only at present. There are some great views from the towers out to the estuary. There isn't onsite parking but there is all day parking for £4 just across the road and a fantastic kids play area within the grounds of the castle (you don't have to go through the ticketed entrance to gain access to the park).

Lovely pre booked visit to the castle with our dog. You very obviously have to book at all heritage/ national trust venues due to current circumstances and not difficult to do so at all. The castle is very interesting and very well kept. There were people working everywhere on the walls and grounds and very friendly they were too and quite willing to chat at a distance.
I have deducted a point because parking wherever in Beaumaris is £4 whether staying for an hour or a day, with no option to pay any less so extortionate when only stay 90 minutes really!! We heard many complaints from other people re this!!

Do not wate your money or your time. This has to be the biggest waste of money I have ever spent at £13.80 for two people. We were in and out in a max 15mins. There is nothing to see and is a compmete rip off. So save your money and either buy yourselves a cup of tea, a pint or a sandwich or better still, visit the gaol and courthouse.

If you are in North Wales you should try and fit in a visit to Beaumaris Castle. We went on a miserable day but It's magnificent, even in the rain. Who would have thought that a king could run out of money? Well, King Edward I did. After conquering Wales, King Edward I built some castles to preserve his hold on these new lands. Beaumaris Castle was the last to be started by his builder, Master Mason James of St George, but, five years after laying the first stone, the coffers ran dry. So this is the reason why Beaumaris Castle is known as "the createst castle never built." Once inside the castle grounds, you are free to wander all over the well-preserved site, into rooms and even on the battlements. Dogs are even allowed in certain parts of the castle. A guide book is available at the Visitor Centre but there are some information boards dotted about the site. Car parking is available nearby and there are plenty of places in the town for refreshments.

Due to Covid restrictions we had to pre-book our visit but this also meant we were able to get in quickly without queuing. This was our second time visiting the castle and we were able to get in free with our English Heritage membership. Not particularly busy the day we visited and we were able to look around at our leisure. The castle grounds are well maintained and tidy. The castle is right in the town so only a short walk to places to eat, shops the pier etc.. and car parking nearby costs just £5 for the day. We'll worth a visit.

This is a mostly open air site, with the indoor activities like a film show closed, reasonably, to meet COVID restrictions. It is necessary to pre-book a timed slot, but the place wasn't busy on a Monday in April.
We arrived about 20 min early for our booked slot, willing to wait but hoping to be allowed in. I asked the lady on the desk whether we could be admitted early - she had maybe 8 bookings for the slot before mine, and about the same for my time, so it wasn't terribly busy day. After a bit of a lecture to the effect that I wouldn't be able to expect such favours if I was to visit the busier castles, she let us in.
Lovely castle, with the walk along the outer walls open.
Had hoped to find a book about the Welsh princes in the gift shop, but the book stock wasn't large. This is understandable in the current climate.
Whilst in the shop, we could overhear a male staff member on the phone, in an office with its door to the shop open, complaining about 'queue jumpers'. It's actually quite difficult to hit a 30 minute slot exactly when travelling a distance. Perhaps Cadw could consider making the slots an hour to help visitors adhere more easily to their regulations.
I last visited about 20 years ago. It's unlikely that I will return.

Beaumaris doesn't have the imposing bulk of Caernarfon or the looming cliff top location like Harlech and Conwy. However, it's low profile is misleading as there is actually a considerable amount to see here. There would have been even more had its builders not run out of money (Edward 1 decided to go to war with Scotland and needed the cash for that).

There are little clues to this around the site, such as a bricked up archway that was intended to be a gatehouse, and changes to the standard of the stonework as you get higher up the towers and walls.

Few of the towers reach their intended height, which is a mercy for the modern visitor as the climb is often far enough. It's possible to walk along the near length of the outer walls, and about half the length of the inner ones. Due to covid there is a one way system in operation. Plenty of hand sanitizer stations dotted about.

Entry is via timed tickets purchased on line. Website is a bit clunky but works. Like Caernarfon and Conwy, Beaumaris is currently closed Thursday and Friday.

The adjacent town of Beaumaris is well worth a visit in its own right.
