It’s surprising what good places are on your doorstep!! As a Blackburnian I have lived away for 18 years. On a trip back to see family, yesterday I decided to be a tourist in my hometown. The museum is in a beautiful Victorian building with fantastic internal original features, especially the staircase. It’s not huge but contains so many interesting things.
The staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
I like the way the exhibitions are laid out in themes with How Blackburn developed into an industrial hub, the workers and children’s lives detailed, then exhibits of weaving and spinning machines. The illustrated manuscripts room was a bit gloomy for me (low light protection of the works), loved seeing the Egyptian mummy again and the paintings. The Bank Top photo exhibition with accompanying written leaflet is very interesting about the history and current day aspects of immigrants living in Blackburn.
An hour well spent. Thank you

Some good pictures (I enjoyed meeting a volunteer guide in the picture gallery) and many other fascinating displays ranging from rare books, to taxidermy, to weaving looms. The Curators and all members of staff are to be congratulated on this gem of a museum and gallery. I certainly hope that I can visit again to enjoy and explore the displays further.

A great visit to BMAG this afternoon. The new exhibition is fascinating!
I particularly appreciated the chats I had with the really friendly and knowledgeable staff when I learned so much about some of the exhibits; I shall appreciate these even more next time I visit and you have also inspired me to research around them. Thank you!
BMAG has got to be one of the best museums and galleries, with something for everyone - I only wish it was open more often.

A surprising little gem in Blackburn Town centre nr the Town Hall.
2 floors with the art gallery upstairs. On the ground floor there's a large collection of old spinning machines and loom's which became even more interesting when the Room Steward began to explain their background and history, especially since he had worked assembling them years ago.
There's a small costume section, some stuffed birds, an Egyptian section with a mummy and a mummified head, but the best part, in my opinion obviously, was the art gallery with the biggest collection of donated wood prints by the famous master Japanese Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige from 19th century, including the Great Wave and Red Fuji.
It's just a pity that there's no cafe serving coffee and cake or little shop selling copies of some of the paintings made into greeting cards, I would have liked to buy a few.

This is a lovely museum crammed full of interesting items and documents relating to Blackburn's past. I was also surprised how many beautiful paintings were in the art gallery on the first floor. The lady on reception was very friendly and helpful giving us information on other places to visit in the locality

Beautiful Victorian building with lovely tiled entrance porch, from the heyday of when local authorities provided free access to culture. Wonderful collection including paintings, egyptology, illuminated manuscripts, natural history, and much more locally relevant items of domestic history and a fantastic collection of looms and other textile machinery. And all for FREE. I can think of other local museums who should take note and see how it should be done!

Easter holiday visit with 2 kids. Enjoyed very much and found it very interesting, great for a free free couple of hours and in town centre! Kids loved the activities. Highly recommended. Love the textile history section, as a result of the Lewis museum closure years ago. My only complaint about the museum, being a blackburn resident, is that it isn't open at weekends which is when many people, especially children, are actually able to visit! I thinks it's also closed Mondays, so that's most bank holidays out too. It used to be open weekends and but no longer due to budget cuts I'm guessing. Should open sat or/and sun and maybe 2 or 3 weekdays.

I know, museums per se, kids find boring, but I’d forgotten how good it was. It’s a small collection but still great for local history on mills and the Egyptian collection is great too.
